Chapter 4

Author: Second Daughter Of Plutus
I woke up in the bedroom this time.

The temperature in the room was just right, but I still felt like I was burning all over.

Cindy was standing by the bed. She handed me hot water and fever medicine. "Take these."

I turned my face away and ignored her.

She forcibly turned my face back. "Still throwing a tantrum? Stop acting like a petulant child! You did something wrong, so you should be punished. If Duncan hadn't pleaded for you, you'd still be in the warm room!"

I looked straight into her eyes and asked, "Would you be happy if I died in there?"

My hoarse voice stunned Cindy, and she finally noticed how terrible I looked.

A brief flash of guilt and heartache crossed her eyes, as if she wasn't the cause of all this.

"You haven't written the apology letter yet, so don't threaten me with death."

She forcefully pried open my mouth and poured the medicine and water in together.

The pill got stuck in my throat, and I coughed violently, tearing open the surgical wound that hadn't healed yet.

Blood seeped out, and Cindy panicked a little for once.

"Are you okay?"

She bent down to pat my back.

At that moment, Duncan and Stanley walked into the room.

Seeing the state I was in, Stanley asked, "What's going on? Why is he bleeding?"

With Duncan present, Cindy's hand didn't land on my back after all.

"It's nothing. The wound just didn't heal properly."

Stanley immediately said, "In that case, I have good news. I bought a mountain villa for Jeremy, the one that he's always liked. The environment there is perfect for recuperating."

As he spoke, he looked at me meaningfully.

I knew this was his test for me, to see if I would really agree to Cindy bearing Duncan's child.

I wiped the water from the corner of my mouth. "Okay, I'll move there."

Stanley beamed with satisfaction. "Jeremy is so understanding. Cindy, you and Duncan should prepare for the surrogacy."

Cindy looked flustered. "Dad, what surrogacy? What are you talking about?!"

"It's Jeremy's idea. Your sister passed away young, so Duncan is all alone. You don't want him to be lonely for the rest of his life, right?"

Cindy's eyes widened in shock. She then glared at me angrily.

"You actually want me to bear Duncan's child? If this gets out, what will people think of Duncan? Do you have no morals?!"

Obviously, Duncan's reputation was very important to her. She did not want people to talk bad about Duncan behind his back.

Her reasoning was full of righteousness and morality, yet they were doing all sorts of morally corrupt things behind my back.

Even now, she still carried the fishy scent of after sex with Duncan.

I felt disgusted. I deliberately asked her, "Don't tell me you're unwilling to sleep with him?"

Cindy's words caught in her throat.

Of course she was willing.

She just couldn't bear to see Duncan suffer even the slightest criticism.

When she didn't answer for a long time, Duncan smiled bitterly.

"Cindy, I don't know how I offended Jeremy for him to humiliate me like this. People already look down on me because I married into the Johnson family and took on the Johnson family name. If I..."

Before he had even finished speaking, tears fell from his eyes.

Cindy hurriedly wiped them away for him while comforting him softly.

Stanley, frustrated, said, "The Johnson family line is about to end! Why are you hesitating?! Cindy, you said Jeremy can't have children, so have one with Duncan instead. Just tell people that it's Jeremy's child. No one would know."

I see. In order to appease my parents-in-law, Cindy even made up lies about me.

But it didn't matter anymore.

This marriage was already rotten to the core. I felt no desire to defend myself.

However, a hint of awkwardness flashed on Cindy's face. She then glared at me.

"You're so despicable, Jeremy! Is this how you're trying to force me to sleep with you? Your methods are as pathetic as ever."

I couldn't understand how requesting a normal marriage relationship was a despicable act.

Looking at her hand that was hooked on Duncan's arm, I propped myself up with difficulty.

"If you don't want to, pretend I never said anything."

Cindy pursed her lips and fell into a brief struggle.

After a moment, she grinned coldly.

"Okay, if that's what you want, I'll grant your wish. You better not regret it!"

At the entrance of my company, Cindy waited for me with a crystal ball, similar to the one I had before. The difference was that this one was engraved with our initials."You smashed the previous one, so I custom-made another one. This one can really make your wish come true."It turned out she had always known I wished on the crystal ball. She had just never taken my wishes to heart. Now that it was already too late, I had no idea what she was playing at.I remained expressionless. "Are you here to make peace? Is this the PR strategy your company came up with? To be blunt, it's rather crude."Cindy shook her head. "No! Jeremy, I want to make it up to you. I had been a fool, and I'm sorry… I took your love for granted and I didn't value your sincerity. I deserve all the guilt and regret I'm feeling right now. I've been blind for the past three years, but fortunately, we still have decades ahead of us. We can create new memories to heal old wounds. I don't expect you to forgive m

That question seemed to have hit a sore spot, and Cindy roared at the cameras."We're not getting divorced!""But you only married Mr. Parker to cover up your affair with your brother-in-law, right? Why won't you let Mr. Parker leave?""You want to have your cake and eat it too? Do you think Mr. Parker is an idiot?""No, that's not it..."Cindy shook her head in denial but found it hard to argue. She clearly remembered the night when she asked me to marry her and the indifference she'd shown me over the past three years.Just then, new information surfaced online.I had made the divorce agreement public. The reporters immediately showed it to Cindy."Ms. Johnson, Mr. Parker has personally revealed the divorce agreement. You've signed the agreement, yet you continue to deny it. Are you reluctant to let go?"One reporter mocked, "Don't tell me you only discovered you loved Mr. Parker after the divorce?"Love?Cindy wasn't quite sure. But the moment she saw the divorce agree

What Cindy didn't know was that I was preparing to join her rival company. As a former senior technical staff member of Johnson Corporation, even after leaving the workforce for three years, there were still many companies willing to hire me.On the day I started work, I was sent to a bidding event, where I happened to run into Cindy. She was with Duncan, but the two of them seemed more distant than before. As soon as she saw me, she came over to confront me. "Why did you block me? Why didn't you go to the villa? When are you going to stop causing trouble?"I said coldly, "Ex-husbands and ex-wives don't necessarily have to stay in touch, Miss Johnson. Please have some self-respect."The words "ex-husbands and ex-wives" left Cindy frozen in place. Her mouth opened in astonishment. "That thing you had me sign, it really was a divorce agreement..."I didn't deny it.It wasn't just a simple divorce agreement either. It also specified my share of the assets.I turned to walk away,

Back at the mansion, Cindy was still waiting for my call. There was no text from me either. Her eyebrows involuntarily knitted together. The old me would've told her even if I was just popping to the supermarket for an onion. But now, I hadn't said a single word to her after moving away.Cindy felt anxious for some reason.Duncan sidled up to her, his hands getting a bit too familiar with her clothes. "Cindy, it's getting late."Cindy instinctively pulled away.Duncan seemed surprised. "What's wrong?"Cindy realized what she had done. "Nothing," she replied.Duncan glanced at her screen and frowned unhappily: "Are you worried about Jeremy?""Of course not!" Cindy immediately denied it, but her eyes remained on her phone.Duncan looked down, and he put some distance between them."If you're so worried, then go find him. You're a married couple after all."Cindy immediately put her phone aside and hugged Duncan to coax him."You're overthinking it. You know better than anyo

I returned to the small house my parents left me, turned on the computer, and plugged in the USB drive.Inside were files that I copied from Cindy's computer. She never allowed me to set foot in her study. Her reason was: "There are trade secrets inside. To prevent accidents, no one is allowed to enter."But last week, I heard her and Duncan making love inside. Therefore, over the past few days, I secretly sneaked in there to check her computer while she and Duncan were having fun elsewhere. There was a folder named "Eternal Love" which required a password to open. I entered Duncan's birthday and easily cracked it.I could guess what was inside, so I never had the courage to look. But now, nothing could hurt me anymore. In the folder, there were countless videos. The earlier videos only contained footage of Duncan by himself. Based on the filming angles, they were probably taken in secret. Each video was only two to three seconds long, but all of them were accompanied by tex

After that day, Cindy began to openly spend time with Duncan in public.Whenever I run into them, Duncan would mock me."Sending your wife to another man's bed for surrogacy. What kind of man are you? You might as well kill yourself."If a shameless couple like them were still alive, why should I die?I didn't bother arguing with him. I went back to packing up.It was only when I had to pack up that I realized my own possessions were pitifully few because I was so focused on pleasing Cindy for the past three years. The only thing I had of any value was a crystal ball.It was the wedding gift Cindy gave me.I used to cherish it like a treasure, making wishes on it every day and praying that Cindy and I would grow old together. But I just learned that it was actually trash that Duncan didn't want.I smashed it hard on the ground. The crystal ball shattered with a crash, like my broken marriage.Cindy happened to return home from the company right then. When she saw what I did
