Chapter 4

Autor: Sweet Lemon
At the entrance, the words 'Staghorn College' gleamed under the sun.

This was the college I had fought to get into through countless sleepless nights. I gave everything I had.

Priscilla suddenly said, "If Caleb were here, he'd be so happy."

Daniel stared at those two words. His eyes welled up with tears.

I followed them as they walked through the library, the track field, and the dorm buildings.

Mom sighed. "Daniel, take a good look for your brother."

Suddenly, Daniel broke down.

Tears fell uncontrollably.

He spoke through choked sobs. "This is Caleb's life. I'm stealing his life."

Mom hugged him. Her voice trembled.

"Now it's yours. This is the only way you can live."

I floated among them.

Daniel cried until he could barely breathe. Mom's eyes welled up with tears. Dad turned his face away. Priscilla clenched her fists.

Softly, I said, 'Daniel, I'm already dead. Mom's right. You need to live well.

'Go see the cherry blossoms on campus for me. Try all the food in the cafeteria for me.'

On the bus ride home, Daniel held tightly to the now-cold box of frittatas.

By the time they got home, it was already late in the evening.

Holding the box of frittatas, he ran straight to the backyard.

I drifted ahead to the cellar entrance.

A weasel lay there with grains of food still clinging to its mouth.

More than half of the oatmeal from last night and the cornbread from this morning had already been eaten.

When the weasel heard footsteps, its ears perked up, and it darted away.

Daniel walked over with the frittatas.

When he saw the empty plates on the ground, his eyes welled with tears instantly.

"Caleb, you ate."

He set the frittatas at the cellar entrance and called out.

"I brought you frittatas with chives and egg filling, your favorite. Try some."

There was no response.

He reached out to open the door, but Mom hurried over.

"It's dark!

"You have to catch the bus early tomorrow to get into Staghorn City. Go inside and sleep."

He hesitated.

"I want to see Caleb. I want to talk to him."

Mom pulled him up. "What's there to say?

"Once you leave tomorrow, I'll let him out. I won't risk him doing something reckless in the middle of the night."

Daniel hesitated. "But he–"

"No more buts. You have to get up early. Go sleep."

She dragged him away.

I stood at the cellar entrance and looked at the box of frittatas.

Frittatas with chives and egg filling were my favorite when I was little.

Daniel didn't even like chives, but every time we made them, he'd wrap a few with chives and egg filling just for me.

I crouched next to the box of frittatas at the cellar entrance.

Early next morning, everyone was up.

Mom checked Daniel's and Priscilla's luggage. Dad then carried the luggage to the door.

Daniel's eyes welled with tears. "I'm going to say goodbye to Caleb."

Mom grabbed him tightly. "Don't complicate things. Once you're on the bus, I'll let him out."

Just then, our next-door neighbor, Jenny, came by.

"Katie, can I borrow some cabbage? We've got guests coming for lunch."

Mom smiled and said yes. She turned around and headed to the backyard.

"Perfect timing. I'll check on Caleb while I'm at it."

She reached the backyard and headed toward the cellar.

Suddenly, she slowed down and frowned.

"What's that smell–"

A thick, rotten stench drifted from the cellar.

Her face turned pale. She staggered forward.

The cellar hatch was loosely closed.

Her hands trembled as she flung it open.

"Ahh!"

Her shrill scream echoed through the entire backyard.

Our three graves were lined up in a row.Daniel kneeled before our graves and paid his repsects."Dad, Mom, and Caleb. I was grinning ear to ear.Daniel looked at the photo and smiled."Caleb, I have good news."I set up a scholarship to help kids whose families won't let them study."This year, it supported twenty-three students. Next year, there will be even more."I named it after you. The Caleb Grant."You won't blame me, will you?"The wind stirred the w

Mom stood beside Daniel. She looked at Dad's face and suddenly smiled."Kevin, when you see Caleb, tell him I miss him."Dad passed away.He was buried beside me.Mom planted an osmanthus tree by his grave. She said I used to love the scent of osmanthus when I was little. After handling the funeral, Daniel returned to the city.On the day he left, Mom stood at the gate, just like she did years ago, and grabbed his arm."Daniel, when will you come back?"This time, he turned around. He looked at her graying hair and her hunched back. His eyes welled with tears."Mom, come to the city with me."She shook her head. "I'm not leaving. Caleb is here. I have to stay with him."Daniel opened his mouth and wanted to say something, but in the end, he didn't say anything. He turned around and walked away. After a few steps, he suddenly looked back and called out, "Mom, I'll come back to see you in a few days."Mom smiled. It was the first time she had smiled since I died. She passe

Priscilla didn't fare any better. After I died, she locked away everything related to me in a box. She didn't dare look at it. She didn't even dare touch it.But every night, she dreamed of me.In her dreams, I was still a child. I ran after her and called out, "Priscilla, wait for me!"She would stop and wait, but I would suddenly disappear. She would hear a voice from underground."Priscilla, it hurts."Every time, she woke up drenched in cold sweat after hearing this. She wouldn't be able to fall asleep again. She put away everything I had ever given her. The only thing she left behind was a pen.I had bought it with the prize money from that competition in ninth grade."Priscilla, use this pen for your SAT test. You'll definitely pass and get into college."She held that pen and cried like a child.Years went by, but this family remained frozen on the day I died.Mom's hallucinations grew worse. She kept hearing me crying out in the cellar. My voice was soft and weak.

There was no hatred, only pain.In the first month after I died, our family completely fell apart. The morning after Daniel spent a whole night sitting by my grave, he packed a few clothes, slung a bag over his shoulder, and walked out the front door.Mom ran after him to the gate and grabbed his arm. "Where are you going?"He didn't turn back. "I'm leaving this place.""When will you come back?""I don't know.""Daniel!" Her voice trembled. "I've already lost Caleb. I can't lose you–"He spun around suddenly. His eyes were terrifyingly red."I've lost my brother too."Mom slowly let go. Daniel walked away without looking back.I floated behind him for a long distance. He didn't cry at all.Once he reached the old oak tree at the entrance of the town, he suddenly stopped. He crouched down and hugged his knees. His shoulders trembled violently.I crouched down beside him and said softly, "Daniel, just let it all out."He did.He bawled his eyes out until his entire body

"Caleb, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have locked you in there. I shouldn't have taken your acceptance letter. I shouldn't have let your brother take your place."With every sentence, he slapped himself.Once on the left, then once on the right. He did it over and over again. His face swelled, and blood trickled down the corners of his mouth, but he kept going.Daniel grabbed his hand. "That's enough."Dad dropped to his knees and knocked his forehead against the ground."Caleb, I'm begging you to forgive me."I floated in front of him and looked at his graying hair.He was only in his forties. When had so much of his hair turned gray?Apparently, it happened over the past few days.On the day of the burial, many folks in the town came. They all heard about the kid who died in the Luther family. They were all here for the drama. Some sighed, some wiped tears away, and others whispered to each other."I heard he was locked in the cellar. He fell and died there.""Why was he locke

"I heard him! I heard him say it hurt! But I left. I left!"I floated in front of her and watched her fall apart.'Mom, you finally heard me. But I called out so many times, and that was all you heard.'At some point, Daniel broke free from Dad's grip.He stumbled to the corner of the backyard, crouched down, hugged his knees, and buried his face in his arms. His shoulders trembled. His sobs were muffled. He looked like a wounded animal.I drifted over and sat beside him.'Daniel, don't cry.'His shoulders trembled even harder. After a long time, he lifted his head. His eyes were swollen to slits, and his lips were cracked and bleeding. He looked in the cellar's direction. His voice was hoarse and almost inaudible."It's all my fault. It's because of me."Dad crouched down and tried to hold him.He shoved Dad away. He suddenly raised his voice."It's your fault! I told you to let Caleb go to college! I said I wouldn't go! But you just had to–"He stopped halfway through
