Chapter 20: Bloodline and Bypass

"Stop," Thalen hissed, his hand shooting out to lock around Zeyric’s wrist with a grip so tight the bones clicked together in the freezing gloom of Malakor’s antechamber. "Do you feel that? The threshold ward isn’t just keyed to faculty mana signatures. It’s a literal blood-gate. It reads lineage."

"Brilliant observation, your lordship," Zeyric muttered back, his teeth chattering slightly as he leaned his weight against Thalen’s side to keep the agonizing static of the distance-threshold from tearing open their shared nervous system. "And since neither of us happens to be Vice-Headmaster murderous Malakor, how exactly do you propose we waltz past a barrier designed to incinerate unauthorized commoners and disgraced aristocrats alike?"

"We don't waltz," Thalen said, his voice dropping into a sharp, uncompromising register that left zero room for argument. "We force it. Right here, right now. We push the bond to its absolute breaking point and merge our auras until the ward can't tell where my bloodline ends and your raw mana begins."

Zeyric stared at him in the dim, violet-tinged light spilling from the pulsing runes carved across the heavy iron-bound oak door. "Are you out of your absolute mind? Starwyn explicitly warned us that forcing a total mental merge outside of a controlled ritual circle could scramble our cognitive functions permanently. We won't just share heartbeats; I’ll end up tasting your childhood tutors and you’ll feel every humiliating time I got thrown out of a tavern in the lower wards."

"Would you rather be scrambled or caught by Malakor's enforcers and dragged down to the stasis-cells before the sun clears the horizon?" Thalen challenged, his chin lifting with that infuriating, arrogant defiance that Zeyric had spent the last two months wanting to either punch or kiss. "Give me your hand, Zeyric. Fully. No hesitations, no mental walls."

Zeyric swallowed hard, the cold sweat on the back of his neck freezing instantly in the drafty corridor. He looked down at Thalen’s outstretched palm—long-fingered, scarred from too many hours of precision blade-work and volatile spell-craft. Without another word of argument, Zeyric slotted his fingers against Thalen’s, gripping his hand so hard their knuckles turned white.

"If this goes wrong," Zeyric whispered, his eyes locking onto Thalen’s with a sudden, fierce intensity, "I am haunting your family estate for the next three centuries."

"Agreed," Thalen murmured. "Now close your eyes and breathe with me. Match my pulse. Exactly."

They closed their eyes in unison. Through the invisible, humming pipeline of their soul-bond, Thalen’s heartbeat slammed into Zeyric’s chest like a war drum—fast, erratic, spiked with a terrifying cocktail of adrenaline and aristocratic terror. Zeyric dragged in a lungful of cold air, forcing his own panicked rhythm to slow down, dragging Thalen’s erratic pulse down with it until their hearts thrummed in a single, deafening, synchronized tempo that echoed inside their skulls like a cathedral bell.

Now, Thalen’s voice echoed not through the air, but directly against the inner walls of Zeyric’s consciousness.

And then the auras tore open.

It wasn't a gentle blending. It was a violent, cataclysmic collision of two entirely different magical ecosystems. Thalen’s precision-honed, ice-cold discipline—built on years of suffocating family expectations, terrifying inadequacy, and the crushing fear that he would never live up to the pristine name stamped on his signet ring—flooded into Zeyric’s mind in a blinding rush of sharp blue light and bitter winter frost. Zeyric gasped aloud, his knees buckling, but Thalen caught him by the waist, anchoring him upright.

In return, Zeyric’s soul-storage opened wide, spilling its chaotic, unfiltered depths straight into Thalen’s pristine mental architecture. Thalen stumbled mentally, choking as a tidal wave of raw, burning amber mana—born of cold-water alleyways, cheap rum, abandoned tenements, and the grinding, desperate terror of absolute abandonment—crashed over his polished composure. It was a suffocating, blinding weight, a roaring furnace of sheer, untamed survival instinct that threatened to incinerate Thalen’s carefully constructed ego down to the ash.

Gods above, Zeyric, Thalen thought, his voice trembling across the connection as he felt the sheer, crushing exhaustion of Zeyric’s entire life pressing down on his shoulders. How do you breathe under all of this?

I don't, Zeyric shot back through the roaring static of their fused consciousness, his mind grasping blindly for Thalen’s ice-cold discipline to anchor his floating terror. I just keep moving.

For a terrifying, endless second, the boundary between them completely vanished. Standing in the dark corridor outside Malakor’s sanctum, neither of them could tell where Thalen ended and Zeyric began. Their thoughts bled together into a chaotic, screaming double-stream of consciousness. Thalen felt the phantom scrape of cobblestones against his knees from a childhood he had never lived; Zeyric tasted the bitter iron of the family teas Thalen had been forced to swallow in silent, glittering dining halls while his father lectured him on purity and power.

The mental merge was overwhelmingly, agonizingly intimate. It was an absolute stripping away of every defense, every lie, every polished mask they had ever worn to survive the brutal hierarchy of the academy.

And then, right as the fusion threatened to snap their shared sanity in half, the heavy iron-bound door in front of them reacted.

The pulsing violet runes carved into the oak flared with a blinding, violent intensity. The blood-gate, sensing not two separate intruders, but a single, wildly unstable, dual-natured sovereign signature that possessed both the pristine blue-blood resonance of the academy’s founding families and the chaotic, raw mana pool of the outer slums, shrieked in digital-magical confusion.

A high-pitched, whining note vibrated through the stone floor, shaking the dust from the ceiling brackets.

Push! Thalen’s mental roar echoed through their shared consciousness.

Together, they slammed their combined auras forward, driving the hybrid wave of ice and fire straight into the center of the threshold ward. The barrier cracked with the sound of shattering glacier ice. A brilliant flash of silver-and-amber light erupted down the corridor, blowing out the wall-torches and bathing the stone passage in an eerie, pulsing luminescence.

The heavy iron latch clicked. The massive oak door swung inward of its own accord, groaning on its hinges as the blood-gate accepted their forced, unnatural superposition.

Zeyric stumbled forward through the threshold, dragging Thalen with him before their legs completely gave out. They hit the cold marble floor of Malakor’s private study hard, sprawling across the expensive Persian rugs in a tangled mess of limbs, gasping for air as their fused consciousness violently snapped back into two distinct, trembling bodies.

"Mother of all saints," Zeyric choked out, pressing his palms against his eyes as the blinding afterimages of their mental merge danced across his retinas. He felt sick to his stomach, every nerve ending in his body humming like a plucked harp string. "Never... never do that again. I felt your entire third-grade humiliation regarding a failed levitation spell. I didn't need to know about that."

"Shut up," Thalen panted, rolling onto his back beside him, his chest heaving as he stared up at the vaulted ceiling of the dark, book-lined study. He raised a trembling hand, wiping a thin streak of nosebleed from his upper lip, though a wild, hysterical edge of triumph cracked his usual aristocratic coldness. "We got through. The blood-gate didn't incinerate us. It registered us as a single entity."

"A single, deeply traumatized entity," Zeyric muttered, finally pushing himself up onto his elbows and looking around the dark, oppressive room.

The sanctum smelled intensely of old, crumbling parchment, dried Wolfsbane, metallic copper, and the sharp, ozone tang of high-tier blood magic. Tall mahogany bookshelves lined the walls, crammed with leather-bound grimoires whose spines bore no titles—only jagged, hand-carved runes meant to ward off curious eyes. In the center of the room sat a massive, claw-foot oak desk cluttered with alchemical scales, glass vials filled with shifting violet liquids, and thick, leather-bound ledgers stacked in crooked towers.

"Well," Thalen said, his voice still shaking slightly as he forced himself to sit up, rubbing his temples where a splitting, synchronized migraine was rapidly forming from the mental merge. "We’re inside. Let’s find whatever Malakor was hiding before the ward-hounds realize the threshold trap has been tripped."

Zeyric scrambled to his feet, swaying slightly before catching his balance against the edge of the heavy desk. "Start with the ledgers. If Starwyn is right, this is where he keeps the financial records of the street thugs who supplied Veyron with that cursed obsidian dagger."

Thalen was already moving, his hands—still trembling slightly from the sheer velocity of their aura fusion—flipping open the topmost ledger on Malakor’s desk. The pages were crammed with cramped, spidery handwriting, detailing wire-transfers, smuggled alchemical components, and a running tally of student names marked with ominous red checkmarks.

"Here," Thalen whispered, his breath catching in his throat as his finger traced down a column of figures. "Look at this. Payments routed through the Sunken Market directly to an apothecary named Madame Kaelin... and next to it, student soul-resonance indexes."

"Malakor wasn't just experimenting on Veyron," Zeyric said, leaning over Thalen’s shoulder, his eyes widening as he read the marginalia scrawled in the margins of the page. "He was harvesting. Using the academy's foundational ward-network to siphon the excess mana of struggling apprentices and funneling it into—"

Before Zeyric could finish the sentence, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the heavy oak door they had just forced open.

Thalen froze. Zeyric’s head snapped toward the entrance.

The shimmering silver-and-amber residue of their forced threshold-bypass had suddenly vanished, replaced by a cold, sharp, clicking sound as an automatic secondary security protocol slammed home. Heavy iron bars dropped across the outer windows with deafening thuds, sealing the room like a tomb.

Simultaneously, a low, hissing vent above the bookshelves popped open, venting a thick, dense cloud of heavy, opalescent blue smoke that smelled sickeningly sweet—like bruised winter jasmine and crushed poppy seed.

"A soporific trap," Thalen hissed, instantly slamming his sleeve over his mouth and nose, though the sweet, heavy vapor was already curling down the walls, clinging to their damp clothes like a physical weight. "He rigged the desk drawers to the door locks. The moment we touched the ledgers..."

"We've triggered a lockdown," Zeyric finished, coughing as a lungful of the sweet, paralyzing smoke hit the back of his throat, instantly making his limbs feel like molten lead. His knees buckled again, and he slammed heavily against the edge of the mahogany desk, knocking over a tray of glass vials that shattered loudly on the marble floor. "Thalen... I can't... my magic isn't answering. The smoke is dampening our auras."

"Don't breathe it in!" Thalen shouted, though his own voice was slurring, his eyelids fluttering heavily as the powerful sedative worked its way rapidly through their shared bloodstream, magnified tenfold by the open pathways of the soul-bond.

Outside the sealed wooden door, a heavy, rhythmic thud of iron-shod boots echoed against the stone floor of the third-floor corridor—accompanied by the cold, unmistakable voice of Vice-Headmaster Malakor, smooth as glass and dripping with venomous amusement.

"Well, well," Malakor’s voice drifted clearly through the thick oak, sounding far too close for comfort. "I wondered which clever little rats had managed to chew through my outer wards. Imagine my surprise to find the academy's most infamous bonded couple digging through my private laundry."

Zeyric slid down the side of the mahogany desk, hitting the floor with a dull thud, his vision tunneling rapidly at the edges as the jasmine-scented smoke filled the room. He reached out blindly across the rug, his fingers brushing against Thalen’s sleeve.

Thalen dropped to his knees beside him, his own vision graying out, his chest burning as his lungs refused to pull in clean air. Through the haze of the bond, he felt Zeyric’s terror crashing over him like a physical wave, mixing with his own rising panic.

"We're... we're trapped," Thalen mumbled, his tongue feeling thick and unresponsive in his mouth as his head lolled against Zeyric’s shoulder.

"Not... yet," Zeyric breathed, his eyes rolling back as the heavy, dreamlike paralysis dragged him down toward unconsciousness.

Malakor’s heavy silver key rattled ominously in the outer lock.

Chapter 45: Panic Room"The hinge is finally shifting, but so is the entire foundation," Zeyric hissed, his boots sliding another inch across the grit-covered floor as the heavy iron grate shrieked against centuries of accumulated grime. "If this stone arch collapses on us, write a very flattering obituary about how I was always right.""I will write nothing of the sort," Thalen snapped back, planting his palm harder against Zeyric’s back to lend his own weight to the effort. The physical exertion instantly bled through their connection, making Thalen’s breath hitch in his own throat in a mirror of Zeyric’s strain. "If the arch collapses, we die together under three tons of masonry, and your ghost will still be complaining about my choice of reading material.""Only because your reading material has led us directly into a pitch-black subterranean void that smells intensely of wet iron and very old mistakes," Zeyric muttered. With one final, desperate heave, he threw his entire weight

"And I refuse to spend our first week of academic rehabilitation swimming through old ink and discarded quills.""Keep your weight centered or the leverage is entirely useless," Thalen shot back, planting his palm flat against Zeyric’s shoulder blade to steady him. The sudden tactile contact sent a familiar, low-voltage thrum racing along their shared soul-bond, instantly syncing their breathing. "And stop complaining about the sewer line. You lived in the outer slums for half your life; a little drainage water should feel remarkably like home.""There is a vast difference between municipal runoff and the historical accumulation of two hundred years of delinquent wizard apprentices," Zeyric grunted, his muscles strai

Chapter 43: The Library’s Secret"If Librarian Thomas catches us down here with an iron poker, he’s going to suspend us until our hair turns gray," Zeyric whispered, his hand clamping tightly around the handle of the rusted tool as the heavy iron gate gave a loud, metallic shriek. "And considering my hair is already half-ruined by your dismal locking-picking skills, I’d prefer not to push our luck.""My lock-picking skills are entirely adequate for a restricted academic vault that hasn't seen a fresh grease application since the second age," Thalen shot back, leaning his weight against the cold stone wall just behind the restricted grimoire section. "And keep your voice down. The acoustics in this library are designed to amplify treasonous whispering.""It wouldn't be treason if we were actually stealing something useful instead of hunting for a mysterious floor grate based on a cracked margin note," Zeyric muttered, though he wedged the tip of the poker into the seam of the flagstone

Chapter 42: The Thesis Assignment"Stop moving before you tear your stitches," Thalen said, though his own right hand instinctively rose to press against his bandaged ribs as a sympathetic twinge flared through the bond."I'm not moving, I'm adjusting," Zeyric shot back, his dark eyes flashing with stubborn defiance as he propped himself higher on his elbow. "And stop wincing. Every time you grimace, my shoulder feels like it's being pulled out of its socket all over again.""Then perhaps you should lie still and stop broadcasting your complaints directly into my prefrontal cortex," Thalen muttered, though despite his sharp words, his gaze softened as he reached across the narrow gap between their cots, his fingers brushing against Zeyric’s knuckles. "Are you actually okay?""I’m alive, which is more than I expected when Malakor’s dome dropped," Zeyric murmured, his defiance melting away under the quiet gravity of Thalen’s touch. He let his hand slide upward, intertwining his fingers

  • Linked by Blood and Bone   Chapter 41: A New Normal

Chapter 41: A New Normal"A ghost who lost its sheet is remarkably accurate," Zeyric muttered, shifting slightly on the narrow infirmary cot with a soft wince that mirrored the dull ache still lingering in Thalen’s chest. "Though given that we nearly blew the entire administrative wing into the lower catacombs, I’d say looking like a ghost is a minor penalty.""A minor penalty," Thalen echoed dryly, turning his head on the stiff pillow to better observe the way the afternoon light caught the dark circles beneath Zeyric’s eyes. "You collapsed like a felled timber right after hurling Malakor into a stone wall. If Professor Starwyn hadn't caught you, you’d have cracked your skull on the cobblestones.""And if you hadn't intercepted Malakor’s gravity spear with your own sternum, I wouldn't have had a functional nervous system left to collapse with," Zeyric retorted, his tone dropping the dry humor for something sharper, more immediate. He propped himself up on one elbow, ignoring his own

Chapter 40: Permanent Ink"I can move just fine," Thalen muttered, his voice raspy and dry as he tried to sit up, only for a sharp spasm of pain to rip across his chest. He hissed through his teeth, sinking back against the lumpy feather pillow with an ungraceful groan. "Though, I suppose my ribs disagree with my ambition.""I told you not to move," Zeyric replied, though a faint, tired smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "Unless you enjoy feeling like an iron anvil was dropped on your torso. Because trust me, I felt every single ounce of it.""You always have to have the last word, don't you?" Thalen glanced sideways, taking in the pale, worn-out state of his partner. The fierce, incandescent white mana that had shattered Malakor’s dome just hours ago had left Zeyric looking as though he had run a marathon through a furnace. "How are you holding up? Beyond the obvious fact that you look like a ghost who lost its sheet.""I've been better," Zeyric admitted, staring up at the vault
