Chapter 43: The Library’s Secret

"If Librarian Thomas catches us down here with an iron poker, he’s going to suspend us until our hair turns gray," Zeyric whispered, his hand clamping tightly around the handle of the rusted tool as the heavy iron gate gave a loud, metallic shriek. "And considering my hair is already half-ruined by your dismal locking-picking skills, I’d prefer not to push our luck."

"My lock-picking skills are entirely adequate for a restricted academic vault that hasn't seen a fresh grease application since the second age," Thalen shot back, leaning his weight against the cold stone wall just behind the restricted grimoire section. "And keep your voice down. The acoustics in this library are designed to amplify treasonous whispering."

"It wouldn't be treason if we were actually stealing something useful instead of hunting for a mysterious floor grate based on a cracked margin note," Zeyric muttered, though he wedged the tip of the poker into the seam of the flagstones with practiced leverage. "Push. Together."

"On three," Thalen murmured, his shoulder pressing flush against Zeyric’s side as the familiar, comforting hum of their soul-bond surged through their nervous systems, aligning their breathing with absolute precision. "One. Two. Three."

With a sharp, cracking groan of ancient mortar, the heavy stone grate popped upward, showering them in a cloud of dry, choking dust that smelled of centuries-old parchment and dead spiders.

"See?" Thalen coughed, waving a hand in front of his face while keeping his other arm hooked firmly around Zeyric’s waist to steady him against the sudden drop. "Total structural integrity. Not a single guard alerted."

"Except for the one right behind us," Zeyric hissed, his hand gripping Thalen’s forearm so hard his knuckles turned white as a faint, metallic scraping sound echoed from the dark reading alcoves above.

"That’s just the grandfather clock on the landing," Thalen whispered back, though his own heart skipped a beat before settling back into its steady, dual-paced rhythm through the bond. "Stop being paranoid."

"I have excellent reasons to be paranoid. Every time we sneak into an unmapped hole in this cursed academy, someone tries to murder us with soul-tethers or brass constructs," Zeyric pointed out, leaning over the dark opening of the shaft and peering down into pitch-black nothingness. "After you, brilliant tactician."

"I wouldn't dream of robbing you of the pleasure of breaking your neck first," Thalen replied dryly, swinging his legs over the edge of the stone drop and letting himself slide down into the damp, vertical shaft.

Zeyric muttered an unprintable curse under his breath before dropping in right behind him, their boots hitting the packed dirt floor with a muffled thud a moment later. The air down here was heavy, freezing, and entirely devoid of any natural draft, carrying the metallic tang of old iron and dormant magic.

"Light," Thalen commanded under his breath, snapping his fingers. A tiny, brilliant sphere of white mana blossomed above his palm, casting long, jittery shadows across a series of rusted iron cages that lined the perimeter of the subterranean chamber.

"By the ancestors," Zeyric breathed, stepping closer to the nearest enclosure and shining the light against its barred door. "What is this place? It looks like a menagerie for magical beasts."

"No," Thalen said, his voice dropping an octave as he examined the strange, rune-etched manacles bolted to the back wall of each cage. "Not beasts. Look at the size of the leg irons. These were sized for human apprentices."

"An illegal holding cell underneath the library?" Zeyric turned, his dark eyes wide in the flickering illumination as he looked around the vaulted stone room. "Malakor wasn't the first person running secret experiments in this academy. He was just copying the founder."

"Or whoever built the foundation before the academy was even chartered," Thalen added, running a gloved hand along a mahogany desk covered in thick sheets of yellowed vellum. He picked up one of the top sheets, squinting at the spidery handwriting. "Listen to this: 'Trial forty-two. The dual-resonance bond remains unstable past the third lunar cycle without an external anchor. Subject V-7 experienced complete neural burnout.'"

"V-7?" Zeyric stepped up beside him, reading over his shoulder. The proximity sent a familiar, electric tingle racing across their skin, a testament to the bond’s constant, humming presence. "Do you think that refers to...?"

"Veyron," Thalen finished, his expression hardening into ice. "Or someone who came long before him. Malakor didn't invent the mind-charm. He found it down here."

"Which means there are likely more records," Zeyric said, scanning the rest of the cluttered desk. "Look for ledgers. Anything that tells us who else knew about this chamber."

Before Thalen could answer, a low, metallic chime reverberated through the stone walls, followed by the heavy, ominous clack of a stone mechanism locking into place behind them.

"What was that?" Zeyric spun around, holding his hand out as a spark of raw mana crackled across his fingertips.

"The entrance," Thalen said, rushing back to the vertical shaft. He grabbed the iron rungs of the ladder and hauled himself upward, pushing his hands against the floor grate above. It didn't budge. He slammed his shoulder against it, but the stone slab remained immovable, sealed tight by an automated rune lock. "The door is sealed. We're locked in."

"And the air," Zeyric gasped, his hand flying to his throat as a sudden, heavy pressure descended upon the room, stealing the oxygen from their lungs with terrifying speed. "Thalen... the ventilation is closing."

"Don't panic," Thalen ordered, dropping back down to the floor of the cell and grabbing Zeyric by the shoulders, feeling the frantic, spiking rhythm of Zeyric’s pulse hammering through the bond. "Breathe with me. Slow down."

"I can't—the air is too thin—" Zeyric choked out, his vision blurring at the edges as the stale, subterranean atmosphere turned to lead in his chest.

"Look at me, Zeyric," Thalen commanded, his voice tight with rising terror as he felt the exact same suffocation clawing at his own windpipe. "We are tethered. My lungs are your lungs. If I breathe, you breathe. Match my rhythm now."

Zeyric squeezed his eyes shut, forcing his racing heart to slow down as he latched onto the steady, unyielding anchor of Thalen’s consciousness. Through the deep pipeline of the soul-bond, a cool wave of steady oxygen seemed to flow directly from Thalen’s calm focus into Zeyric’s starved system, beating back the rising panic.

"Good," Thalen whispered, his forehead resting against Zeyric’s as they both struggled against the thinning air. "Now, how do we open the door?"

"The... the desk," Zeyric gasped, pointing a trembling finger toward the vellum-covered table across the room. "The founder's journal. There has to be a manual override for the intake seals."

They stumbled across the stone floor together, moving as a single, awkward unit as the lack of oxygen began to make their limbs feel like lead. Thalen slammed his hands down on the open ledger, flipping frantically through the brittle, crumbling pages while Zeyric held the glowing mana sphere steady above the text.

"Here," Zeyric pointed to a diagram sketched in the margin of the page. "An emergency pressure release. A secondary rune sequence on the eastern pillar."

"Can you read the dialect?" Thalen asked, his vision swimming. "My eyes are crossing."

"It's high-arcane shorthand," Zeyric muttered, squinting at the swirling glyphs. "It says... 'As below, so above. Press the twin stones in perfect synchronization.'"

"Twin stones," Thalen looked across the room at two protruding granite blocks embedded in the pillar on either side of the heavy iron door. "We have to hit them at the exact same millisecond."

"Like casting a dual shield," Zeyric said, stepping up to the right block while Thalen took the left. He raised his hand, his fingers trembling with exhaustion and oxygen deprivation. "Ready?"

"On three," Thalen breathed. "One... two... three."

They slammed their palms against the granite blocks simultaneously, channeling their combined mana through the silver rings on their fingers. A blinding flash of silver-blue light erupted from the stones, followed by a deafening, hydraulic roar as the heavy intake vents above them suddenly slammed open.

A rush of fresh, cold library air flooded the subterranean chamber, hitting their lungs like a physical blow. Both boys collapsed against the stone pillar, sliding down to the floor as they gasped in great, ragged breaths of sweet oxygen.

"Note to self," Zeyric croaked, staring up at the vaulted ceiling with a weak, breathless laugh. "Next time we go exploring, bring an oxygen bladder."

"Or at least a better lock-pick," Thalen replied, turning his head to look at Zeyric, his chest still heaving as the adrenaline slowly ebbed out of his bloodstream. He reached out, his fingers tangling into Zeyric’s dark hair to pull him just a fraction closer, ensuring through the steady thrum of the bond that they were both still entirely, undeniably real. "Are you alright?"

"I've been better," Zeyric whispered, leaning his head against Thalen’s shoulder as the cool air washed over them. "Though I’m starting to think we have the worst hobby in the entire academy."

"Perhaps," Thalen murmured, his gaze shifting back toward the open desk and the dark, unmapped corridors stretching out beyond the cages. "But nobody else is going to find the truth."

Before Zeyric could reply, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the far corner of the chamber—not from the door they had just opened, but from a second, smaller iron hatch set into the floor beneath one of the empty cages, slowly swinging open of its own accord to reveal a flight of stairs descending even deeper into the dark.

"If this stone arch collapses on us, write a very flattering obituary about how I was always right.""I will write nothing of the sort," Thalen snapped back, planting his palm harder against Zeyric’s back to lend his own weight to the effort. The physical exertion instantly bled through their connection, making Thalen’s breath hitch in his own throat in a mirror of Zeyric’s strain. "If the arch collapses, we die together under three tons of masonry, and your ghost will still be complaining about my choice of reading material.""Only because your reading material has led us directly into a pitch-black subterranean void that smells intensely of wet iron and very old mistakes," Zeyric muttered. With one final, desperate heave, he threw his entire weight

"And I refuse to spend our first week of academic rehabilitation swimming through old ink and discarded quills.""Keep your weight centered or the leverage is entirely useless," Thalen shot back, planting his palm flat against Zeyric’s shoulder blade to steady him. The sudden tactile contact sent a familiar, low-voltage thrum racing along their shared soul-bond, instantly syncing their breathing. "And stop complaining about the sewer line. You lived in the outer slums for half your life; a little drainage water should feel remarkably like home.""There is a vast difference between municipal runoff and the historical accumulation of two hundred years of delinquent wizard apprentices," Zeyric grunted, his muscles strai

"And stop wincing. Every time you grimace, my shoulder feels like it's being pulled out of its socket all over again.""Then perhaps you should lie still and stop broadcasting your complaints directly into my prefrontal cortex," Thalen muttered, though despite his sharp words, his gaze softened as he reached across the narrow gap between their cots, his fingers brushing against Zeyric’s knuckles. "Are you actually okay?""I’m alive, which is more than I expected when Malakor’s dome dropped," Zeyric murmured, his defiance melting away under the quiet gravity of Thalen’s touch. Chapter 41: A New Normal"A ghost who lost its sheet is remarkably accurate," Zeyric muttered, shifting slightly on the narrow infirmary cot with a soft wince that mirrored the dull ache still lingering in Thalen’s chest. "Though given that we nearly blew the entire administrative wing into the lower catacombs, I’d say looking like a ghost is a minor penalty.""A minor penalty," Thalen echoed dryly, turning his head on the stiff pillow to better observe the way the afternoon light caught the dark circles beneath Zeyric’s eyes. "You collapsed like a felled timber right after hurling Malakor into a stone wall. If Professor Starwyn hadn't caught you, you’d have cracked your skull on the cobblestones.""And if you hadn't intercepted Malakor’s gravity spear with your own sternum, I wouldn't have had a functional nervous system left to collapse with," Zeyric retorted, his tone dropping the dry humor for something sharper, more immediate. Chapter 40: Permanent Ink"I can move just fine," Thalen muttered, his voice raspy and dry as he tried to sit up, only for a sharp spasm of pain to rip across his chest. He hissed through his teeth, sinking back against the lumpy feather pillow with an ungraceful groan. "Though, I suppose my ribs disagree with my ambition.""I told you not to move," Zeyric replied, though a faint, tired smirk touched the corners of his mouth. "Unless you enjoy feeling like an iron anvil was dropped on your torso. Because trust me, I felt every single ounce of it.""You always have to have the last word, don't you?" Thalen glanced sideways, taking in the pale, worn-out state of his partner. The fierce, incandescent white mana that had shattered Malakor’s dome just hours ago had left Zeyric looking as though he had run a marathon through a furnace. "How are you holding up? Beyond the obvious fact that you look like a ghost who lost its sheet.""I've been better," Zeyric admitted, staring up at the vault
