Chapter 3

Author: Peachy
The door closed.

I collapsed onto the floor.

I could feel our mate bond, distant and thin, being smothered by another woman's scent.

The pack was already gossiping. Ryan had abandoned me.

I stayed home, enduring the sharp, pulsing pain from the bond.

Two weeks later was the full moon celebration.

"Luna, are you sure you should go?" My omega housekeeper, Lena, looked at me with worried eyes.

I stared at my haggard reflection in the mirror. At over four months, my belly was just starting to show.

I had to go.

I refused to let them see me as broken.

The grand hall of the Black Moon Estate glittered with light.

I walked in alone, wearing a black evening gown, my head held high.

The chatter died instantly.

Every head turned toward me.

Their eyes were filled with pity, mockery, and morbid curiosity.

"Monica?"

Chloe, Ryan's sister, glided toward me, a viper in silk.

She was flanked by the daughters of pack elders, her face a mask of fake concern.

"Are you alright? You look awful."

"I'm fine."

"Are you?" Chloe leaned in, her voice suddenly sharp. "Then why did my brother move out?"

The music in the ballroom seemed to stop. Everyone was listening.

"Chloe, this is none of your business."

"None of my business?" she sneered. "My brother is the Alpha of this pack! The purity of his bloodline is everything!"

She suddenly pointed a finger at my stomach, her voice a piercing shriek.

"Everyone is dying to know! While you're claiming to carry my brother's heir, he's off protecting some other woman! So, tell us, Monica. Who is the real father of the pup you're carrying?"

Dead silence.

"Chloe!" I was shaking with rage. "You're insane!"

"Am I?" she laughed, triumphant. "Let's ask the pack! Our Alpha values his bloodline above all else. If that was really his pup, do you think he would ever leave its side for a second?"

Whispers erupted around me, and the looks of suspicion felt like arrows.

"This is Ryan's child! The only heir to the Blackthorne family!" I screamed.

"An heir?" she shrieked with laughter. "A bastard with no name? Guards! Seize the woman who shamed our Alpha!"

Two towering enforcers walked toward me, their faces blank.

"You wouldn't dare!" I backed away. "I am Ryan's mate! I am your Luna!"

"Mate?" Chloe's eyes glinted with malice. "A woman who can't even name her pup's father has no right to be our Luna!"

Rough hands grabbed my arms.

I was dragged from the hall.

They hauled me back to the manor.

In the main hall, Ryan was gently rubbing Bonnie's back.

She was curled up on the sofa, pale and looking terrified.

"Ryan…" she trembled. "I heard so much noise outside…"

"It's nothing," Ryan's voice was impossibly soft. "I'll protect you."

Then he saw me. Dragged in by his guards, my dress torn, my hair a mess. A complete wreck.

But there was no sympathy in his eyes. Only cold disgust.

"What happened?"

"Alpha," one of the enforcers reported. "She caused a scene at the gala. Lady Chloe accused her of disgracing the pack's name."

Ryan looked at me like I was a stranger.

Bonnie whimpered, pressing a hand to her stomach. "Ryan, I'm so scared… The way she's looking at me… What if she hurts the baby?"

That was the last straw.

Ryan's face hardened.

He didn't even look at me. His voice was ice.

"Lock her in the west wing's silver cell. She doesn't leave until I say so."

Ryan's POV"Monica..."My voice trembled so badly I could barely speak. My body, still kneeling, swayed on the verge of collapse.Eight years.Eight years of searching, of longing, of regret.I had finally found her.But she was no longer the girl who needed my protection. She was Nix.The uncrowned queen of the City of No Light."No," she said, her voice colder than a grave. "Monica Blackthorn is dead. You killed her that night, eight years ago."She walked back toward her throne, every step filled with regal authority."The person standing before you now is Nix."I struggled to get up, but my legs gave out from under me. Useless."Monica, please...""Please what?" She turned to look at me, the indifference in her eyes cutting me deeper than any blade. "Beg me to forgive you? Or beg me to save your dying pack?"She knew. She knew everything."The Heart of the Moon..." I said desperately. "You said you knew where to find it...""The Heart of the Moon?"A cruel, beautiful smile played

Ryan's POVI stood at the entrance to the City of No Light, staring at the black mist that shrouded it.Eight years. For eight years, I had searched for Monica like a mad dog.But it was as if she had vanished from the face of the earth. Now, my time was running out.The bloodline curse was devouring me from the inside out.The healers said I had three months, at most. The "Heart of the Moon" was my last hope.A mythical artifact said to heal any bloodline wound. If it was real, maybe I still had a chance to find Monica. To apologize. To beg for her forgiveness."Alpha, are we really going in there?"My guard looked at me with worry. Most of my pack had turned their backs on me after the... incident. Only a few remained."You can go back," I said, my voice hoarse. "This is my choice."The guard was silent for a moment, then shook his head. "I swore an oath to protect you."Loyalty.The word sounded like a bitter joke to me now.If only I had shown Monica the same loyalty, maybe none o

I didn't give him three days. I didn't even give him three minutes. The second he chose her, I was gone. The moment he ran to Bonnie, I walked toward the black carriage waiting at the crossroads without a single look back.Dr. Draco had arranged it. It would take me to a place Ryan could never reach. No goodbyes. No turning back.Eight years later. The City of No Light."The owner of the Blood Moon Bar is asking for a word, My Lady."My subordinate, a once-exiled nobleman, stood respectfully before my desk."About?"I didn't look up from the intelligence report in my hands. It was the latest whisper from the North. Three packs tearing each other apart over a silver mine. Pathetic."The Silver Crescent Alliance's arms smuggling. He wants your protection.""His price?""He's willing to offer seventy percent of his profits."I put the document down and leaned back in my throne, carved from pure obsidian. It took me three years to win this throne from an ancient vampire duke.It was th

Three weeks later."Monica, I know you're in there."Ryan's voice came from outside my door. "Let me say it for you."My voice was terrifyingly calm as I looked at Ryan, kneeling in a pool of blood."You just cared more about your pathetic Alpha duty. And you would sacrifice anything for it!""Monica...""Sacrifice your mate. Sacrifice your child. Sacrifice your own soul!" Every word I spoke was designed to gut him. "As long as you get to be the 'good Alpha,' right?"Ryan clutched his chest in agony. With the mate bond completely shattered, his Alpha power was collapsing."Help! Somebody help!"A sharp voice echoed from the hallway. Bonnie stumbled in, with Chloe right behind her.The ritual circle of blood dominated the floor.Ancient runes swam in the air, pulsing with raw, terrifying power. And I lay at the heart of it, blood-soaked and remade by its power. The perfect sacrifice. The raw power of a pureblood poured off me in waves."Oh my gods..." Bonnie covered her mouth, her voice trembling. "What is she doing?"All the color drained from Chloe's face. It was sweet."A child his own father wouldn't claim," I whispered, "doesn't deserve to be born.""No!" Ryan fell to his knees beside me, his hands trembling as he reached for me. "Monica, you can't do this!""Can't I?" I gave him a cold smile, blood trickling from the corner of my mouth. "Why not?""That was our baby!" he roared, his golden eyes shimmering with pain. "The child we waited for! He was supposed to be the pack's strongest heir!""We?"I struggled to sit up. The mate bond shattered in my chest, splintering like glass. The bloody ritual circle on the floor began to pulse with an eerie red light. It was an ancient sacrificial rite, a forbidden magic only a pureblood could command."The child we waited for?" I laughe
