Mother

"Why would you want to see her now of all times," Father looks at me suspiciously. 

"Do I need a reason to see my mother now? If you need one, I was talking to Gem and she thought I could use some time away,"

"Gem suggested this?" Father said raising an eyebrow. 

"Yes, I'll be at mother's place for a while, I'm going to pack my bags," I said as I walked out of my Father's study.

"Karma wait I-" I closed the door behind me as Kaname tried to speak to me.

The next morning, Gem had told me since my mother isn't paired, she should live in a city made for people without pairings. The city is protected by a thin layer of material that will either cancel or drastically reduce powers and the city is miles away from where I'm living with Father. Gem also says that he refuses to go near there so I'll have to rely on my portals.

"When you try to get there, your portal might send you somewhere else or you can't pass through them. For you to get the portals to work to get to your mother, you'd either need to teleport outside the material or seriously concentrate, knowing you that'll take a lot," Gem said as I returned to my room.

As I'm packing I hear a knock on my door.

"Come in, unless it's Kami," I walk over to my closet and take the clothes Mom had bought me and put them in my suitcase. The door opens and I see Kaname with a suitcase in his hands.

"Ready to go?"

"What is this a family trip?" I said sarcastically. "Kami isn't coming too, is she?"

"No she's staying here with Father, it'll just be you and me, you know some quality time together," Kaname said with a smile. 

"Since when do you want to spend time with me?" I said looking at him with my arms folded across my chest.

"Look I know it's been tough these last couple of years but I'm trying to be better now, you know-"

"War changes people I know," I said saying his favourite line since this war started. He seems to say that line to excuse a lot of his behaviours and actions. 

"Well yeah, but I was going to say something different this time."

"It's whatever, let's just go I texted Mom she's waiting for us"

I pointed to the floor in the middle of my room, concentrated on my mom's living room and a portal opened but quickly closed. It took 10 tries until it worked then I grabbed my suitcase, and jumped into the portal. The portal connected to the ceiling of our Mother's house, when we landed our mother came out of another room. She pulled me into a big hug, I almost never get affection like this, I wished I lived with Mom instead.

"Karma, I'm glad you're still alive and healthy, Kaname it's been a while since you've come to visit. Where's Kami, is she not coming?"

"She isn't, she wanted to be alone with Father to discuss something. It's great to see you, Mom." Kaname hugs both me and Mom, she plants a kiss on both our foreheads.

"I'm glad I got to see you both, let me make you something to eat are you guys hungry?"

"I'm not hungry, Karma do you want me to take your bag up to your room?"

"Do you remember where it is?" 

"I have a rough idea of where it is," Kaname takes my bag and walks out of the room.

"Mom, can I ask you something?"

"Of course you can sweetie, ask me anything,"

"I was wondering why you're not paired,"

"Oh well…it's pretty complicated but I'll explain it to you soon. How long are you staying?"

"A week,"

"Perfect, Asagi could you run to the store and get something to make dinner with?"

"Yes ma'am," Asagi walks into the room, grabs a coat, and leaves. Asagi is my mother's butler, he's been with her since my parents separated when the war had started. Mom's greatest concern was Father sending us into war and possibly scarring us, or getting us killed. Unfortunately, mom had been transported away from the battlefield and away from us only because she isn't paired but Father has made sure she gets to live comfortably.

"So sweetie, how's your search been?" Mom asked me, I was shocked hearing her ask.

"No luck and Father won't help me much,"

"Much?"

"All he told me was that they have no power, but no gender, no age, nothing,"

"Maybe there's a trait you could look for,"

"Trait? What do you mean by that?" I asked tilting my head. 

"You, Kaname, and Kami all have my white hair but your Father's small nose, maybe your half brother or sister has a trait from your father too, " she said explaining to me.

"Great idea Mom, but what trait could they have picked up?"

"I don't know but seeing as though they have no power they have to be somewhere within the city,"

"Yeah I was thinking the same thing," I thought to myself I wonder if Mom knows anything about Father's successor. I was about to ask when Kaname came into the living room.

"Karma, I left your bag on the bed in your room okay,"

"Okay, thanks Kaname, I'm going to go unpack now," I went upstairs to my room and started putting my clothes into a dresser. Not long after my door opened and closed, I turned around to see Kaname standing behind the door.

"Can we talk?" he smiled awkwardly at me.
