MALCOLM

I pulled my eyes from the TV to look at Natalie.

She should be sleeping by now but she wasn't. Her eyes were wide, her hands trembled and she held her phone in front of her face as it rang. She was hyperventilating, her chest heaving back and forth as if she was under attack.

I rushed to her bedside and held her shoulders. "It's okay, it's okay," I said but even to my ears the words sounded insufficient. Things were far from okay and saying that they were okay meant nothing at all.

"What should I do?" She asked in a breathy whisper. I heard the fear in her voice and it rattled me.

"Mrs. Gravestone keeps calling. What should I do?"

Tears continued to stream down her face and my fingers itched to wipe them away but I hesitated. "I'll take care of this," I said quickly.

But she was already shaking her head as I spoke. She looked up to the ceiling, her eyes rolling back in their sockets. "It's over," she said and the dismay in her tone surprised me. Why was she giving up already?

NATALIEI rolled my eyes when Malcolm walked around and opened my side of the door, holding an arm out for me.I should be used to his fussiness by now but I wasn't. This version of Malcolm was so far removed from the reality every one else knew that every now and then, I stared at him, my jaw dropping slightly and wondered if he had been swapped with a long lost twin I knew nothing about. He was gentle, too gentle. And he was attentive to the point of being dramatic. I thought about the stares we'd had to endure all day at the office and I felt a strange chilliness crawling down my spine. At least he wasn't scooping me up like a distressed bride anymore.I took his arm and let him lead me up to his front door. "You should rest for a while. I'll whip up something for dinner," he said when we got to my bedroom door.I shook my head quickly. He was doing too much and making me feel like a burden again. "You don't have to. I can order in pizza or something," I said too quickly, my words

NATALIEI waited with bated breath for the moment when Mrs. Gravestone would bring up my scandal. She didn't.She talked onboarding of new employees, policy reforms and staff benefits, moving smoothly from one subject to the other but she didn't once bring up me or Malcolm's name.It surprised me. We were the hottest subject of gossip and she was probably concerned as well, so why wasn't she saying anything? Of course, I didn't want her to bring it up either. I wasn't even sure what I would say if she did but I was used to being put on the spot like that."Lastly," she said as she turned to me and I almost flinched. The moment was here. She had saved the best for the last. I sat straighter, ready to pretend that I didn't care at all."I want Mia to be your partner as you work on the project. You'll need help and she'll provide it for you," she said.I looked at Mia who had her eyes fixed on Mrs. Gravestone as she nodded. The last thing I wanted to do in this world was have to work wit

NATALIE I flew out of bed when I heard the front door chime open. Malcolm was back. I felt a painful tug in my leg but I limped to the living room, my heart racing in my chest. I hadn't realized how lonely I felt in the house until this moment. I missed him and the realization hit me with surprising clarity. I stopped just as he stepped in after a woman in purple scrubs. Her hair was tied back in a tight bun and she had a huge, friendly smile on her face. "You must be Natalie," she said as she stepped towards me, a hand extended. I took her hand as my gaze flickered to Malcolm who had tossed his bag and was now hanging up his coat. "She's a caregiver," he said simply. I made a confused sound. He kept going the extra mile for me as if his sole purpose was to make me die of guilt. "I don't need a caregiver," I said through gritted teeth. The caregiver was still smiling at me and I felt terrible for doing this in front of her. Malcolm hardly spared me a glance as he spoke. "You

MALCOLM "I've fixed a bath for you. I'll wait outside while you take off your clothes," I said. She looked up at me, eyes widening slightly before she seemed to catch herself and nodded. I hid a smile as I stepped out and waited beside the door. When the door opened again, she was standing there in only a white towel, her hair tied up in a messy bun. I gulped and quickly fixed my eyes on her face. "You didn't have to," she said, her face bright red. I cleared my throat as I lifted her off the floor and carried her to the bathroom. "Nothing like a bath to help anyone relax," I muttered. I placed her in the bath and positioned her leg gently in the water. She winced slightly and then looked up at me with a small smile. I knew she was in pain. She was just adept at hiding it. "I'll be back in thirty minutes. Enjoy your bath," I said and took several slow steps to the door. "Wait," she said and I turned back so quickly that I almost lost my footing. She pressed her lips together

NATALIE My heart rate increased when the car crawled to a halt in front of our apartment complex and Malcolm leaned over me to help unfasten my seat belt. My breath caught in my throat and then I felt the familiar nervousness, the one that gripped my throat and refused to let go. Malcolm was sure, his face determined, certain he had this all under control but my mind was a field of chaos. I loathed my situation and I loathed the choicelessness that accompanied it. I pressed my face to the tinted window and exhaled slightly when I saw no reporters. At least, they had not found out where we lived. Malcolm got out of the car and just as I hoped my side of th door, he was standing there, his hands held out for me. "It's fine. I'll just—" Before I could finish my statement, he hoisted me into the air, bridal style and marched up the driveway to the building's front entrance. I buried my face in his chest in case anyone saw us and I felt like I could almost taste the heady scent of hi

NATALIE I was crying. I wasn't sure why exactly I was crying but I felt something snapping in my chest and suddenly the dam broke and I felt hot tears streaming down my face. My reality was still the same, nothing had changed. No, perhaps it had even gotten much worse now. I expected a large cover of my face on the news tonight with some catchy headline that only served to nail my coffin faster. Malcolm placed a hand on my shoulder as he moved closer to me. "Why are you crying? It's over now," he whispered. It was easy for him to think this was over simply because we were now safely in this car but I knew this was far from over and I was the one who would suffer the brunt of it anyway. "Everything... Everything about my life has fallen apart," I managed in between sobs. How did I go from being excited to attend the gala with Mrs. Gravestone to being in this situation? In only one fleeting moment, my life had spiraled out of control and in the worst way possible. I wasn't sure w
