Chapter 1

Author: Pantaloon
Noah Ritchie froze when he heard my reply.

His eyes locked on mine, wide with disbelief.

Had I really just rejected his confession?

Before he spoke, he had probably imagined countless outcomes. The only one he hadn't considered… was being turned down.

Noah and I had grown up together. We were childhood sweethearts in every sense.

Our parents were colleagues and neighbors.

Ever since kindergarten, I had been fond of trailing after him wherever he went.

He'd always doted on me, his little playmate, and he often went hungry himself just to buy me snacks.

The most touching memory I had of him was when I got into trouble for scratching up my family's car. I even smashed the windshield with a rock.

It had absolutely nothing to do with him, yet he stepped forward without hesitation and took the blame.

He was beaten for it and spent three days in bed.

From that day on, I swore I would marry him.

And in my previous life, I did.

But it had cost me a lifetime of heartbreak.

He did love me… just not as much as he loved Carla Davidson, the transfer student who joined our class in senior year.

For a long moment, I stayed silent, and Noah's face gradually darkened. He finally couldn't hold back and asked, "Tiffany, do you even understand what you're saying right now? Did you not hear me clearly just now…"

"I said no!" I cut him off before he could finish. "Try shaking the water out of your head, will you? The SATs are only months away. Who has time to play house with you?"

I looked at him. He was still just eighteen, his face bright and full of youthful confidence. There was no trace of the defeated, joyless man he became after being forced to marry me in our past life.

This moment only solidified my decision.

'Noah, in this life, I will never love you again. If it's true love you want, I'll let you chase it. Just don't count me in,' I thought.

I glanced at his face, now visibly twisted with frustration, and repeated my refusal.

"If you didn't believe me the first time, I'll say it again. Noah, I will never be your girlfriend. Not now. Not ever."

Each word left my mouth slowly with finality. His expression turned even darker.

He stared at me for a couple of seconds before letting out a cold laugh, like someone who'd just lost face and was scrambling for a way to save it.

"Fine," he said. "If you won't be my girlfriend, then return everything I've ever given you!"

My hand, which had been flipping through a textbook, froze mid-motion.

I looked up at him, stunned.

Noah spoke with complete self-righteousness.

"You said you won't be my girlfriend. So why should you keep the things I gave you? If you can't return them, then pay me back in cash!"

I let out a breathless laugh, equal parts anger and disbelief.

Clearly, I had underestimated how cold and petty he could become once his heart changed.

Under his astonished gaze, I removed the hair clip and elastic from my hair, then unfastened the necklace from my neck and the bracelet from my wrist.

I even dug through my backpack and pulled out a notebook and a fountain pen he had given me. I handed them all to him.

"That should be everything. As for whatever's been used, I'll pay you back."

Then I offered him the only cash I had left—twenty dollars.

With that done, I turned and walked off the rooftop of the school building, heading back to class.

After that, I did everything I could to avoid Noah, either locking myself inside at home or heading out early and returning late.I deliberately steered clear of anywhere he might show up.I even went on a two-week trip out of town with my best friend, just to keep my distance. It wasn't until the university registration date drew near that I finally returned home.I declined my parents' offer to take me. Instead, I set out alone for university. The moment I got into the cab at the entrance of our residential complex, I heard someone calling my name behind me.I turned instinctively and saw Noah running toward me, his face lit up with excitement.I quickly urged the driver to go.As the car merged into traffic, I caught a glimpse of him in the rearview mirror, standing there, lost and devastated.During the four years of university, I rarely came home. When I did, it was only for a brief stay—two weeks at most. The rest of the time, I was working part-time jobs to support mys

In the days that followed, I barely exchanged a word with Noah.Every time he tried to approach me at school, I made sure to find an excuse to leave before he got close. At home, when he came over with his parents, I'd stay hidden in my room, refusing to come out.I poured all my energy into studying, and in just a month, my grades climbed to a new level. After finishing the last subject of the final exam, I let out a long sigh of relief. I packed up my stationery and followed the crowd out of the school gates at a leisurely pace.To my surprise, Noah had come early and was already standing with my parents, waiting for me.The moment he saw me frown, he rushed over. His face was full of forced cheer and exaggerated flattery."Tiffany, I bet you did great this time, right? I haven't bothered you at all this past month. Aren't you over your anger by now?"For a moment, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry.In my previous life, the care I could never get from him had now become

Noah suddenly grew anxious, rattling off a string of questions.I didn't respond much, just gave a faint nod and murmured, "Yeah."Then I quickened my pace, walked past him, and boarded a bus.Through the window, I saw Noah still standing there in a daze, as if he'd been frozen in place, unable to take even a single step. Only when the bus began to pull away did he seem to snap out of it.Panic washed over his face as he suddenly bolted toward the bus, yelling after me."Tiffany! I don't believe it! I don't believe you could be so cold to me! Get off the bus! I need to talk to you!"As the bus disappeared at the end of the street, I thought I saw him stumble and fall to the ground.Maybe it was pity, or maybe it was the lingering remnants of a past life, but to my surprise, my eyes stung with tears.'Noah, now you finally know what it feels like to be the one left behind,' I thought bitterly.A short while later, the bus stopped in front of the library. I swiped my student ID

Noah's face darkened the moment I stopped him."Tiffany, let go of me!"I said nothing. He tried to shake off my grip, but I held on tight.I knew that call just now had come from Carla. And it suddenly hit me—this was the same day she had the car accident in my previous life.Back then, he rushed to the hospital to be with her.But this time, I wouldn't let things go his way so easily.Even though the ache inside me was threatening to drown me, I held my ground and asked calmly, "Noah, your leg is perfectly fine. Why did you pretend to be injured? Was it just to keep me from competing in the academic competition? If you don't give me a real explanation right now, I won't let go."I looked him square in the eye, unafraid.Behind us, a few elderly neighbors had caught on. Embarrassed by the deception, they began to mutter curses under their breath.Noah didn't have time to argue with me. He nearly shouted, his voice unraveling at the edges."You stole Carla's gold medal! If

I understood Noah's intentions. What I didn't understand was where all that hatred suddenly came from.He used to care for me deeply—almost excessively so.How could someone change that completely, in such a short time? The crowd around us was growing by the second.I kept my head down and walked away as quickly as I could.Behind me, Noah shouted my name, leaning on his crutch like some kind of victorious rooster. And just before I disappeared from view, he threw one last sentence at my back."Tiffany, this isn't over!"I didn't know what else he had planned. But at least the academic competition hadn't made all my effort meaningless.I'd beaten Carla and taken first place.Standing on the award platform, I could feel her gaze burning into me.That same night, Noah was waiting for me downstairs.Under the dim streetlight, his expression was unreadable.I stood there for a moment, then grew impatient. I told him to move and reached out to push him aside. He stumbled, near

Noah still refused to give up and kept pressing me with questions. But just then, the bell rang.Back in the classroom, I went straight to the teacher and requested a change of seats.Under Noah's dark, brooding stare, I moved my things and sat next to my best friend. Not long ago, I had gone to great lengths to sit beside him.Our class seating was arranged according to academic ranking. I not only had to control my scores but also my rank, which I had carefully calibrated every step of the way. After much effort, I had finally achieved my goal.Yet, in just a few short days, I had already requested to switch seats.Thankfully, the teacher didn't give it much thought. She was too busy tutoring me and Carla for the upcoming academic competition next week.Only the two of us in our class had qualified for it.In my past life, I missed that competition because Noah got into a car accident.
