Chapter 2

Author: Tipsy Kite
Josh finally noticed the bandage on my right arm.

He couldn't help but laugh. "How did you manage to be just as careless as Susie? Now you're both dealing with injuries. No wonder the two of you are close."

Susie pretended to be annoyed. "I'm fine on my own. I don't need you. Go keep Tanya company."

I caught a brief flash of jealousy in her eyes.

Josh's tone turned icy.

"What are you talking about? I promised Mom I would take care of you until you fully recovered.

"Without me helping you these past few days, you could barely even get to the bathroom. Did you already forget that you fell in the shower last time?"

Susie quickly glanced at me and explained, "That's because you wouldn't let me take a shower."

I listened as they went back and forth.

In the end, I didn't want to ask anything else.

Suddenly, Susie lost her balance, and the ceramic bowl in her hand fell to the floor. I watched Josh instinctively reach out to catch Susie, and my heart ached.

"Josh, the nurse said Susie had already recovered and been discharged two weeks ago," I said quietly. "So, have you two been living together all this time?"

Susie looked at me nervously and pleaded, "Tanya, don't get the wrong idea. If you're upset, I'll stay away from him. Please don't be mad. You're still the most important person in my life."

I said nothing, but Josh's gaze suddenly hardened. "I promise that after next week, I won't say another word to Susie. Is that what you want?"

When he said that, tears spilled from Susie's eyes. She made it seem like I was the one making things difficult for them.

For some reason, my throat felt tight, and it was hard to breathe.

The love and friendship I had treasured suddenly felt ruined.

Betty had been listening from inside for a long time before realizing she had gotten the wrong idea about Susie and Josh. She came over and looked me up and down.

Then she politely explained, "Susie was hurt while saving me, so I asked Josh to take care of her. Please don't take it personally."

Josh nodded beside her. "Yeah. Mom's right. Susie saved Mom, so we owe her. Taking care of Susie is the least I can do. I promise you. This won't affect our wedding next week."

"No." I took off my wedding ring and threw it into the trash. "Josh, I don't want to get married anymore."

I turned to leave, but Susie hurried over and grabbed me. "Please don't be mad at me!"

As I struggled against her grip, my foot slipped, and I fell hard. My right hand landed on the broken pieces of the bowl. A sharp pain shot through my arm, and blood soaked most of the bandage.

Susie came over crying to help me up, then used my hand to slap herself across the face.

"Tanya, hit me if it'll make you feel better!"

Josh instinctively grabbed Susie's hand. "Susie, this isn't your fault."

He grabbed the first-aid kit and used tweezers to remove the pieces of ceramic from my hand.

Watching him work so carefully suddenly took me back to my senior year of high school.

Back then, I often fainted because of anemia and sometimes fell hard enough to split my head open. Josh would carry me on his back all the way to the hospital.

Later, he secretly changed his college plans and said he would study medicine so I would never get hurt again.

When I saw his medical school acceptance letter, I burst into tears.

"Josh, your dream was to make video games. How could you let go of your dreams for me?"

I told him I wasn't worth such a huge sacrifice.

Josh stroked my head and argued with me.

"You're my whole world. If I can't even help you when you're hurt, then what's the point of making great games?"

He really did become an excellent doctor.

But now, he was the one who had caused me so much hurt.

As Josh removed the ceramic pieces from my hand, he called the ER. "Hey, Larry. Tanya's hurt. I'll bring her over now. Yeah, thanks."

"There's no need to." I cut him off.

Josh insisted on taking me to the hospital. "Tanya, don't be stubborn!"

But just as we reached the door, Susie quietly cried out in pain.

Josh froze.

He looked back at Susie, then let go of my hand.

Susie anonymously reported me to one of my business partners, falsely claiming that I had faked my professional qualifications.I was gathering evidence to clear my name when Josh got to her first. He traced the IP address and confirmed that Susie was the one who filed the report. He threw the evidence at Susie, his expression grim. "Susie, how dare you try to ruin Tanya's career? Have you lost your mind?"Susie's face went pale. "Josh, I just… I was so afraid of losing you. I wasn't thinking when I did it. It was all because I love you!"Josh pulled away from her in disgust. "The evidence clearly shows you made up lies to destroy Tanya's career. Whether she forgives you or not is up to Tanya."I stood nearby and asked quietly, "Why did you do this to me? As far as I know, I've never done anything to hurt you."Susie let out a broken laugh, her eyes full of jealousy. "Why did I do it? It's because I love Josh too!"I shook my head in disbelief. Some people refused to learn, but

Josh didn't wait for my answer. He turned and rushed out without looking back.He knelt beside the child, pressing both hands firmly against the bleeding wound as he performed CPR with practiced skill. His white shirt was quickly stained red with blood. As I watched him save the child against the light, I clenched my fingers. At that moment, Josh looked just like the young man I remembered, the one who had once sworn to save lives and protect me for the rest of his life. But I wasn't about to lie to myself. He could save other people, but he could never bring back our dead relationship. The ambulance arrived with sirens blaring, and we went with the paramedics as they rushed the child to the hospital.Outside the emergency room, Josh sat slumped on a bench.I walked over and handed him a wet wipe. "Whatever happened before is in the past. Josh, just go home. There's no point in staying here. You were meant to save lives. Don't waste that gift."Tears welled up in his eyes at

I was surprised to see Josh waiting outside my apartment. We hadn't seen each other in six months, yet he had lost so much weight that he looked completely different. His eyes were bloodshot. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up.He said hoarsely, "Tanya, I was wrong. I'm here to take you home."He rummaged through his suitcase, pulled out a box of canelés, and held it out to me."You used to love these canelés from the bakery near school. I bought some for you."When I said nothing, he stepped forward and took my hand. "I know. I kept choosing Susie over you, and that's why you lost all faith in me."He slapped himself hard across the face."I completely lost my head then! But I really do love you. Tanya, every night when I close my eyes, all I see is you throwing away your ring and walking away for good. Every day, I wonder if things would still be the way they used to be if I had gone to the hospital that day."I looked at Josh without emotion."What we had was real, an

"Josh, I want to ask you for something. At the wedding next week, will you let me be your bride?"Josh froze and stared at her in disbelief. "Susie, what are you talking about? You saved my mom, and I'm grateful to you for that. But Tanya has always been the only woman I wanted to marry."Susie burst into tears. "But she's already gone! We grew up together, so I know her better than anyone. She's too proud to come back once she's left!"Josh looked at her, feeling more frustrated by the second. On the way home, Mom sat beside me. She fidgeted with the edge of her shirt before she finally spoke."I was too quick to judge earlier. Susie's always been innocent, and she never thinks about men that way. I've watched her grow up, and she's a good kid. You're about to marry Josh. As husband and wife, you two just need to talk things out. Don't be so petty."When we were kids, Susie's father drowned while saving Mom. After she was orphaned, Mom brought her to live with us.Susie always knew how to charm Mom and make her smile. She always got good grades. Whenever she won an award, Mom would make extra dishes for her, then turn to me and complain that I wasn't trying hard enough."Why can't you be more like Susie? Don't be so quiet all the time."When I was eight years old, a chicken got into the peanuts at home. Susie told Mom I had eaten them, and Mom slapped me.
