Chapter 7

Lingering Thoughts

Maria stepped into the house and met Aunt May watching her favourite series.

"You're back, sweetheart?" She said while staring at the screen.

"Yeah" she changed to her flip flops and sat beside Aunt May. She rested her head on her laps. Aunt May understood her action. This was how she always felt after visiting her mom.

"Hey, baby. Are you okay" She asked stroking her hair gently.

"I am fine, I just want you to cuddle me for a while."

"No problem dear but don't you want to eat something."

"I'm not hungry"

She didn't persuade her further just kept on stroking her hair softly.

Soon Maria fell asleep on her laps and she smiled.

She looked down at Maria's sleeping face and saw her best friend staring back. Same nose. Same stubborn chin. Same fire hidden beneath the softness.

"I promised you, Hailey," she whispered. "I will never abandon her.“

"Though life hasn't really been fair to an innocent girl like you Maria. I promise to make sweet memories with you for as long as I can."

She kissed her cheek and reached out to the shawl beside her and covered Maria.

Soon she also slept off in that position.

MADISON'S PENTHOUSE

Francis entered inside and went straight to her room without wasting time.

Madison lay on the bed with a sexy transparent robe on her and a wine glass in hand.

“I knew you would come” she lose the robe and walked nakedly to Francis.

…..

The city lights sprawled below them, glittering through the floor-to-ceiling windows. Silk sheets tangled beneath them. The air smelled of expensive perfume and sweat.

Madison arched beneath Francis, her nails digging into his shoulders. She was close. So close.

"Frankie," she breathed. "Don't stop."

Only she called him that. Only she was allowed.

His body moved on instinct. His mind was elsewhere. More like someone

Brown eyes.

She tightened around him, her breathing ragged. "Yes... right there..."

Tearing paper. A sick smile.

"Frankie—"

He slowed.

Not slowed. Stopped.

Madison's eyes flew open.

He pulled back. Withdrew completely.

He wore his trousers.

The silence was deafening.

Madison lay there for a moment, her body still trembling from the edge he had pulled her from. Her chest heaved. Her legs shook.

Then rage flooded her face.

"What is this? A punishment or what?“

He didn't turn around.

She sat up so fast the sheets pooled around her waist. Her hair was wild, her skin flushed, her eyes burning.

"I was about to—" She stopped herself, breathing hard. "I was right there, Francis. Right there."

He reached for his shirt.

Still no words just silence.

She was furious. But she dare not say anything without thinking if not Francis could end everything they share.

"I'm not in the mood," he said flatly.

"Really?“ She laughed, but there was no humor in it.

"You're lying."

He didn't answer.

He went to the door and left just as he came.

Madison sat in silence for a long moment. The anger was still there, simmering. But underneath it, something else.

He has never stopped before. Never.

She pushed the thought away. He was stressed. Work, probably. Or his father. Something would blow over. It always did.

She lay back against the pillows and reached for her phone. Scrolled for a moment. Then set it aside.

Her body still ached. Denied. Unfinished.

She closed her eyes and let her own hand drift down her stomach. It wasn't the same. But it would do.

He'll come back, she told herself. He always comes back.

When she finally reached her peak, she whispered his name into the empty room.

"Frankie."

She smiled in the darkness.

He would be back. And when he returned, she would make sure he never wanted to leave again.

After all she is the only one that can give him that satisfaction.

---

Francis was driving and his mind was wavering.

His mind has been on that girl since the meeting in the afternoon.

It is either her angry brown eyes, or her tearing the cheque or the sick smile when she did it. Or her cute comeback.

Yeah cute. He found her comeback cute and sassy in a way.

His lips went up but not fully forming a smile.

Gosh! what is wrong with me?

…….Next morning

Aunt May's Apartment

Aunt May woke to find herself on the couch, the shawl draped over her instead of Maria.

Speaking of Maria, where was she?

She turned toward the staircase.

Maria stood at the bottom of the stairs, fully dressed, and with a half smile on her face.

“Good morning, Aunt May.“

Her heart hammered against her ribs as fragments of the previous night rushed back: the storm, Sophia's insistence, the tea, the fire. The fire. She had fallen asleep on the sofa. She was certain of it.But she was in a bed now, cocooned in silk sheets that pooled like liquid around her legs. Her shoes had been removed and placed neatly beside the nightstand. Her coat hung on the back of a nearby chair, draped carefully, as though someone had taken care to let it dry.Someone had.Maria pushed herself upright, the sheets slipping to her waist. Morning light poured through tall windows, illuminating dust motes that drifted lazily in the air. The room was beautiful—pale walls, fresh flowers on the vanity, a painting of rolling h

  • Lost in Thy Arms   THE VISIT TO HIS MAISON

Chapter 23THE VISIT TO HIS MANSIONThe cab slowed to a halt before the tall iron gates of Francis’s estate. Rain drizzled lightly, misting the air, and Maria came down and paid the driver. She walked forward, clutching the file tightly against her chest. The guards approached, stern-faced, their uniforms crisp despite the damp weather. “Name?” one demanded. “Maria,” she replied, voice steady though her heart raced. “I’m here to deliver a file to Mr. Francis.” The guard exchanged a glance with his partner, then pulled out a phone. Maria stood awkwardly in the drizzle, her shoes damp, as he dialed. A brief conversation followed, clipped and efficient. Finally, the guard nodded. “You may enter. He confirmed.” The gates swung open with mechanical precision, and the she walked cautiously into the estate. Maria’s breath caught as the mansion came into view. ---It was breathtaking. Elegant fountains arched water into the air, their droplets catching the faint glow of garden lig

His breathing was heavy, his lips parted, but his eyes—those eyes that had been dark with wanting just moments before—sharpened with immediate attention. She didn't know how to explain the sudden knot in her chest. It wasn't that she didn't want him—God, she did, so much it scared her. "I—" she started, then stopped. Her hands were trembling slightly, and she hated that he could probably feel it.He didn't wait for her to find the words. He saw it—the hesitation, the tension in her shoulders, the way her fingers had wrapped around his wrist like a quiet plea. And he let go.Not just her hand. He let go of everything. He sat back, creating a careful, deliberat

Chapter 21SHADOWS AND SECRETSFrancis moved quietly toward the corner shelf, his silhouette barely visible in the storm-lit room. Maria watched, tense and uncertain, wondering what he was doing. A moment later, the sharp click of a lighter broke the silence, followed by the soft glow of flame. He lit one candle, then another, until five flickered across the lounge, placed at strategic points that pushed back the darkness in trembling circles of light. When he returned to the couch, Maria was trembling, her hands shaking as she whispered, “Let me out, please… I’ll behave. Just let me out. I can’t see anything.” Tears brimmed at her eyes, her voice cracking under the weight of fear. Francis sat beside her, pulling her gently into his arms. He said nothing, but his jaw tightened, his thoughts dark—silently wishing death, or plotting vengeance, for whoever had planted this terror inside her. Gradually, her sobs subsided. She pulled away, embarrassed, wiping her face. “Thank you… Sir…

Chapter 20STORMY CONFINEMENTThe sky had been grey all afternoon, but Maria didn’t think much of it as she continued working on her laptop. She was tired from the long meeting, but she had promised herself she wouldn’t let work wait. The office was quiet, almost unnervingly so, except for the sound of the rain hammering against the windows. The rain had started in the early afternoon, turning the city streets into rivers of silver. She stared at it through the window, silently hoping it would stop before 7pm. By that time she should be fine with her work. But the weather had other plans, the rain turned into a heavy storm.“I would have to sleep at the office today if this storm doesn't stop by 8pm.“ She said glancing at her wrist watch. The time was 6:45pm.____“Sir, the latest financial projections—” she began, stepping into his office. He glanced up briefly, expression neutral. “Leave them here.”Outside, the storm raged on. A bowl of oatmeal was already on the table, topped with fresh berries and a drizzle of honey."Morning, sweetheart," May said without turning around. "Sleep well?"Maria stood in the doorway for a moment, watching her. The way her hands moved with practiced ease. The way her shoulders were set just a little too straight. She's holding it together for me, Maria realized."Yeah," Maria said softly. "I slept okay."She walked to the table and sat down. May brought over a steaming bowl for herself and sat across from Maria, wrapping her hands around the warmth. For a moment, neither of them spoke."Aunt May," Maria began, her voice careful.May looked up."Are you okay?"
