Chapter 8

Author: Clara Whitman
Lila's POV

One year passed by quickly.

I learned to recognize quite a lot of words. Marissa taught me how to write my name and Cyrus's. She said, "These are the two most important names in your life."

I made a lot of new friends.

Mike would take me to the park to feed pigeons. George taught me how to bake. Dr. Hopkins would praise me for my progress every time I visited him, saying I was recovering much quicker than he expected.

"Half a year more of medication and rehabilitation, and you'll be like any ordinary person."

Dr. Hopkins handed Cyrus my medical report with a smile. "It's all thanks to you, training with her every day. If it was anyone else, they would've run out of patience."

Cyrus held my hand as his finger traced across my palm. "Then, let's set our wedding date half a year from now when you've fully recovered."

We received many wedding gifts from different people. Cyrus got George to return all but two.

One of them was from Valentina, the girl from the Hayes fami

Lila's POV"Lila! I combed through the entire Regina County just to look for you. I haven't slept in half a month, yet you…"Angelo suppressed his anger and reached his hand out to me, saying with a little anticipation, "Come here."I hid behind Cyrus, clutching him tightly, not daring to look at Angelo one bit.Angelo's gaze darkened even more when he saw my reaction, yet he forced himself to snicker at Cyrus, saying, "Cyrus, I don't blame Lila because she's a little bit slow, but you should give me an explanation on how my fiancee ended up with you.""It has nothing to do with him!"Before Cyrus could say anything, I popped my head out and said clearly, albeit with a little tremble in my voice, "I stopped wanting to become your fiancee for a long time!""What did you say?"Angelo was dumbstruck. He went forward, about to grab me."You used to look forward to marrying me every single day! It's only been half a month and yet you've changed. Even a lost dog who's been gone for

Lila's POVIn the estate, Mike ran over and exclaimed, "Ma'am, the Don is back! The casino has been dealt with. He will be able to spend more time with you for a long time now!"I excitedly jumped off the swing with the unfinished cherry bracelet in my hand. When I saw a figure coming over, I excitedly ran over and hugged him. "You're back!"He caught hold of me and patted me on my head gently.Just when I was about to hand him the bracelet, I looked up, only to be caught off guard. The man in front of me was wearing the black suit that Angelo would usually wear, but he was not Angelo.I blinked in confusion as the bracelet fell to the ground. I asked in bafflement, "W-Who are you?"…As the storm went on, rain hitting on the glass windows, Cyrus sat on the leather couch looking at me with a warm gaze.He chuckled. "I see. There I was, still wondering why there was no information of a Lila in the Hayes family. I know that Valentina Hayes, the one that I was supposed to marry,

Traditional and exacting in nature, Cyrus feared her the most.He was worried that she would make things difficult for his substitute wife, jeopardizing the entire political marriage. However, the reports that came back from his men were surprising. His mother was sharp-tongued, but she had already quietly accepted his wife to the family. On the first day Marissa landed in Neuyark City, the first thing she said to the butler in the limousine was, "I don't like the Hayes family! Get Cyrus to divorce that substitute wife of his. Don't tell me that the Sullivan family can't even find a proper marriage alliance?"On the fourth day, Mike reported that substitute wife had been heading to Marissa's room every day,

Lila's POVIn the estate, I sat before the dressing table as one of the housekeepers, Lillian Larsen, helped me with my hair. She said with a smile, "That shirt that you ironed for the Don last night… He touched it so many times, but he couldn't bring himself to wear it to the casino today. He was afraid it might get dirty."His men were secretly teasing him. They said they've never seen him cherish such a piece of clothing."I felt a tender sweetness unfurl in my heart, quickly replying to Lillian, "Please contact the tailor. I'd like to make two more shirts and a jacket for him since he travels often. I want something thicker to keep him warm."At that moment, Cyrus's Unuderboss, Mike Griffin, approached us. But then, I didn't know his identity. He stood by the door and said politely, "Ma'am, the Don would like me to ask you if you're comfortable living in the estate. Please let me know if you want anything. Anything at all."I pointed at the empty back garden behind the manor
