Chapter 2

Author: Starlit Slippers
The church had its own parking lot, but every time I came, I deliberately parked at the bottom of the mountain.

All eight thousand stone steps of it.

By the time I reached the bottom, my tears were usually dry.

I was just about to open my car door when my phone rang. Unknown number.

The moment I answered, a familiar voice came through.

“Ethan Sullivan, if you refuse to see me, the least you can do is let me see my son.”

I hung up immediately.

Then I blocked that number too.

For five full years, there had been no place in my life for the name Wendy Calloway.

And I’d been doing just fine.

I drove back to the office. The second I stepped inside, my assistant looked at me uneasily.

“Mr. Sullivan, the client we’ve been negotiating with for a long time suddenly says they want to terminate the deal.”

I looked up. “Why? There’s nothing wrong with our pricing or our product.”

My assistant looked baffled too. “I asked. They only hinted at it, but... they said we may have offended the owner of Calloway Group.”

So Wendy’s way of crushing people hadn’t changed at all over the years.

My assistant frowned. “Mr. Sullivan, our company doesn’t even compete with Calloway Group. Why would she target us?”

I set down my pen and answered evenly, “Because she’s my ex-wife.”

His eyes went wide so fast it was almost comical.

“She’s the one? The ex-wife everyone talks about... the one who cheated on you with some sales guy?”

The words were out before he could stop himself. He clamped a hand over his mouth, face full of panic.

“Mr. Sullivan, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean—”

I waved him off, my tone flat. “It’s fine. That was a long time ago. There’s nothing here that can’t be said.”

He still looked mortified, lowering his head as he muttered, “I always thought those rumors had to be fake. I mean... you’re you. Why would she ever betray you?”

Back then, almost everyone thought that.

Even I had thought that.

But reality proved otherwise.

No promise lasts forever.

I called the class president back.

If I counted the timing right, once I left this time, it might be hard to ever see them again.

So before I went, I wanted one last get-together with the guys I’d shared a dorm with in college.

That night, all six of us got together.

We hauled in four cases of beer and declared we weren’t leaving until we were completely wasted.

A few rounds in, everyone got louder.

The class president swirled his beer, hesitated for a long moment, then finally spoke.

“Ethan... there’s something I never told you.

“When Wendy couldn’t reach you, she called me a lot. She wanted me to help arrange a meeting. She said...”

Before he could finish, Jack slammed his glass onto the table with a sharp crack and started cursing.

“Hell no! Wendy Calloway is a heartless, ungrateful snake.

“If the Sullivan family hadn’t raised her, she’d have been a homeless orphan. Who the hell does she think she is?”

The class president shot him a warning look, trying to shut him up before he upset me.

But that only made him angrier.

“No, I’m saying it. If Mr. and Mrs. Sullivan hadn’t helped clear her parents’ name back then, would the Calloway family even have what they have now?

“And what did she do? She turned around and stabbed Ethan in the back. People like that deserve to get hit by a truck.”

His eyes were red when he looked at me. “Ethan, you were always too kind.

“After what she put you through, how are you still this calm?”

I smiled a little. “It’s not kindness. I’ve just really let it go.”

Wendy was absolutely a terrible woman.

But I had to admit, she was gifted in business.

By the time my parents had fully cleared the Calloway family’s name, Wendy was already twenty-five.

By then, her family had long since fallen apart. The old Calloway name was nothing but ruins.

The Calloway Group that existed now had been built entirely by her own hands.

And once, I had been her strongest ally.

Even now, when I thought back on those startup years, my blood still ran hot.

For one major contract she wanted, I drank with a client until I ended up with stomach bleeding.

For a key project she was determined to win, I stayed up four nights in a row putting together the bid proposal.

Back then, for the sake of her dream, I would’ve slept at the office every night if I had to.

I was so busy, I never even realized when she started seeing that man.

The moment Claire’s fingers brushed the raw marks around my wrists, the fury in her eyes nearly spilled over. All the fear I’d been holding in the entire way finally snapped."Good thing you showed up when you did, babe. A second later and I’d be nothing but a smear at the bottom of the cliff."Claire lifted a hand and gently brushed the dust from my face. Then she pulled me tightly into her arms, still shaken herself.“I told you to take security with you when you go out, and you never listen. See what happens when you run into a psycho?”Watching me hold another woman, Wendy exploded.“Ethan Sullivan! Look at me, damn it! I’m your wife! I’m the woman you belong to! You only get one woman in this life, and it’s me!”One of the mercenaries stepped forward and kicked her hard.Wendy coughed up blood instantly.Claire’s lips parted slightly as she gave the order in a cold, even tone.“Break one of her hands. Then put her away. Make sure she never gets back out.”The mercenaries moved wit

Over and over, Wendy brought up the good times we once had, trying to move me.But to me, every one of those memories was a joke stained with my son’s blood. My father couldn’t stand watching it anymore. He went to find her himself. He took her up to the church on the mountain and made her stand before Nathan's urn.The moment she saw it, Wendy dropped to her knees and cried like a lost child. She hit herself again and again, repeating the same words over and over.“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”Then she pulled out documents transferring all of her shares in Calloway Group. She wanted to hand the entire company over to me.As if money could make up for what she’d done.I didn’t even look at the papers.I refused them outright. Then, as if some invisible force had started moving in the background, everything began to collapse. One month after Blake was sentenced to death, Calloway Group came under investigation for tax fraud. Its accounts were frozen. The stock price crashed. The ma

“I really regret it! You’re the person I’ve loved most in this life. Can’t we start over?“We can have another child. I’ll spend the rest of my life making it up to you, making up for everything. I’ll give you anything you want. Everything I have.”Her remorse sounded raw and sincere. Every word was soaked in pain. And still, all I felt was how absurd it was.Not a single ripple stirred inside me.Then a clear little voice rang out nearby.A little girl with two pigtails came bouncing over, reached out, and grabbed my hand.In a soft, babyish voice, she said, “Daddy, up.”I bent down, scooped my daughter into my arms, and smiled at her.The tenderness in my eyes was something Wendy hadn’t seen from me in years. She stared at us in disbelief.“Who is she? Ethan... whose child is that?”“My daughter.” My tone stayed calm as I answered her word by word. “Wendy Calloway, we’ve been divorced for a long time.“I have my own family now. A wife who loves me. A daughter I adore. I’m doing very

Wendy coughed up a mouthful of blood, her voice shaking.“They must have been in so much pain... Nathan was always so afraid of pain...”One of the guards looked at her with open contempt and kept going on purpose.“We had that cellar chained shut tight. Smoke poured in through the cracks under the door, and we could hear them screaming for help.“Oh, and to prove to Mr. Stone that the job was done, we recorded it on the cellar security camera.”He took out his phone and played the video. On the screen, I was slamming my fists against the door again and again, trying to break it open.My knuckles shattered. The skin of my palms tore open so badly the wounds went down to the bone.Blood streamed down the metal door. But it was like I couldn’t even feel the pain.Nathan’s little body was curled up in my arms. His breathing was growing weaker and weaker, his tiny face turning bluish purple from lack of air.In a faint, fading voice, he called for me.“Daddy...”Softer.And softer.Until t

“They lied to me, didn’t they?“There’s no way Nathan is dead. Ethan Sullivan, tell me!”Wendy’s voice had broken into something close to a scream.I didn’t want to answer her. Not a single word. This blood-soaked truth was hers to uncover. She needed to tear it open with her own hands and see for herself exactly how those hands had ended up stained with Nathan’s blood.Wendy completely lost control. She drove like a madwoman straight to the hospital and stormed into the office of the doctor who had treated Nathan back then. Her eyes were red as she grabbed his arm and demanded, “What happened with Nathan’s third bone marrow transplant? What was the outcome?”Even after all these years, the doctor clearly remembered her.A mother that heartless wasn’t easy to forget. There was undisguised contempt in his eyes.“Ms. Calloway, you have the nerve to ask about the outcome?“You were the one who canceled the surgery yourself. That was Nathan’s last chance.”The second the words left his mou

But just when I was about to ask for a divorce, Nathan was diagnosed with acute leukemia. The doctor said the best option was a bone marrow transplant.I got tested for a match immediately.I wasn’t one.Just when I was drowning in despair, Wendy turned out to be a match. In that moment, she became my last hope. For Nathan’s sake, I had no choice but to give up the idea of divorce. She donated bone marrow twice for him, and both procedures went well.Nathan’s condition gradually stabilized. Then one day, Blake showed up with a little boy who had just turned one. That was when I finally understood why Wendy had spent more than half a year “on business” at an overseas branch last year. She had gone there to give birth to his child.Blake even brought in some so-called spiritual advisor, who declared that the boy was the Calloway family’s once-in-a-century lucky star—the chosen child destined to bring the family prosperity for generations. The entire Calloway household treated that boy li
