Chapter 4

Author: Nancy Yale
When they arrived home, Lucien went to park the car while Christina entered the house. She stopped at the doorway, her eyes falling on Vanessa, who was curled up on the sofa in a nightgown, surrounded by snacks, and watching TV.

Christina paused deliberately and said, "Didn't you say you wouldn't be home tonight because of a mixer?"

Vanessa glanced up, curling her lips into a sly smile. "Oh, Christina, I forgot to tell you. I actually had a fight with my boyfriend, so I decided to go to the mixer to make him jealous."

She stretched out her neckline, revealing a scatter of hickeys across her skin, then looked at Christina with a provocative gaze. "I told him about it, and he didn't seem to care at first. But as soon as I arrived at the party, he showed up and dragged me away."

Laughing lightly, she added, "I didn't expect him to be so jealous. He went at it with me three times in the car."

Christina's nails dug into her palms, the sharp sting spreading through her body. She forced herself to breathe and asked, "Since when did you have a boyfriend? You never mentioned it."

Vanessa tilted her head and smiled lazily. "Three months ago."

Three months ago—that was exactly when Vanessa moved into their home. Back then, she had just started working in the city, and Lucien's best friend had asked him to look after her as a favor.

So, from the very first day she moved in, she had been entangled with him.

Christina's breath quickened, and just as she opened her mouth to speak, a pair of warm hands gripped her shoulders from behind.

Lucien's voice was gentle. "Christina, you've had a long day. I'll run a bath for you so you can relax, alright?"

Before she could say anything, he nudged her toward the bathroom.

Once inside, Christina started undressing, ready to wash away her exhaustion. But she suddenly realized she had forgotten to bring clean clothes.

Opening the door, she froze.

Across the room, Lucien was pressing Vanessa down onto the sofa and tugging at her nightgown with a rough urgency. His hands gripped her waist tightly, trailing kisses along her collarbone and downward.

Vanessa breathed heavily, her voice lilting. "Ah... not so hard. Christina's in the bath! Didn't you have enough in the car?"

Lucien's movements grew more intense, his breaths ragged, and Vanessa's whimpers turned almost tearful.

"Shut up!" he growled. "Don't you dare meet other men again!"

Vanessa smirked as though she had won, then suddenly locked eyes with Christina, who stood frozen in the doorway. Her gaze sparkled with mischief.

"Fine, I won't. I'm yours, okay? Jealous fool."

Unable to bear the sight, Christina grabbed her clothes and shut the bathroom door.

Sinking into the water, her mind spun with the image she had just witnessed.

Five years ago, during their honeymoon on a tropical island, he had sulked just because she glanced at a shirtless man on the beach.

He had dragged her back to the presidential suite and kept her there for seven days. By the end, they'd run out of strawberry-flavored rubbers, and the bed had collapsed.

Holding her tightly afterward, his eyes had reddened. "Christina, I have everything they have. Don't look at other men. Don't leave me."

It took endless reassurances before his jealousy subsided.

Since then, she never dared look at another man.

But now, he was just as crazed for Vanessa.

Christina surfaced from the water, taking a deep breath. When she stepped out of the bathroom, Lucien was alone in the room.

On the table, there was a plate of freshly cut fruit and a steaming cup of tea.

Seeing her, Lucien quickly handed her the cup with a warm smile. "I checked your cycle. Your period's coming soon, so I prepared this for you. It'll ease the pain. Drink it while it's hot."

Christina held the cup, feeling no warmth from it.

She couldn't understand how he could act so devoted, fresh from another woman's arms.

The question gnawed at her, keeping her awake all night.

Just as she was about to drift off, Lucien stirred beside her. Suddenly, he shouted her name.

"Christina!"

He woke in a panic, groping blindly until he found her. Pulling her into his arms, his voice trembled. "Don't leave me!"

Christina stiffened. "What's wrong?"

His eyes reddened. "I had a nightmare. I dreamt you left me. But it was just a dream. You're still here."

Lowering her eyes, Christina swallowed her words: Soon, I won't be.

Maybe it was that dream that spooked him, but the next day, Lucien insisted on taking her to work with him.

Christina refused, but he pleaded until she gave in.

Once in his office, she noticed it was filled with photos of her. Seeing her stare, he wrapped his arms around her from behind, rubbing his face against her neck.

"A lot of women try to get close to me, but these photos help keep them away. Don't worry, baby. I'm very faithful."

Christina lowered her eyes, saying nothing.

Just then, his assistant knocked, reminding him of a meeting. Reluctantly, Lucien let go of her and told her to look around while he worked.

Christina wasn't in the mood to explore, but she didn't want to stay in his office either. So she wandered through each floor.

Around noon, her phone rang. It was immigration services.

"Miss Mason, we need you to come in and sign one more document for your emigration application."

Just as she was about to respond, a familiar voice came from behind her.

"What emigration?" Lucien asked.

Christina let out a quiet laugh. "So what if he loved me? He still betrayed me. Not only did he keep it from me, but all his friends covered for him too. Maybe you did as well."The incident at Christina's birthday party, where Vanessa fainted due to pregnancy, had caused a public uproar. Christina didn't believe Katie could have been unaware.Sure enough, Katie's expression stiffened. Ever since Lucien and Christina got married, she had urged them to have children. But one couldn't due to health reasons, and the other refused out of love for his wife. Katie had grown resentful, and seeing Christina always left her feeling uneasy. Naturally, her attitude had been far from kind. So when she learned that Vanessa was pregnant, she threw propriety aside and forgot how shameful infidelity was in their family.Even though Lucien's father gave her the cold shoulder daily for it, even though Christina suffered in silence, Katie didn't care. Nothing was more important than having a grand

Lucien stood frozen in place, his hand reaching out instinctively to grab Christina's arm.She brushed him off without hesitation, turning to help her friends take the drunken man to the hospital. But one of the friends gently stopped her."We planned this dinner to send you off," the friend said softly. "We never expected it to end like this. We already feel guilty enough—how can we trouble you further?"The friend gave her a light push toward the door. "Go home and pack your things."Christina hesitated but eventually nodded. Without another word, she turned and headed outside."Christina!"Lucien had been watching her the whole time. When he heard her friend mention packing, panic flashed across his face. He lunged forward and grabbed her hand."Christina, where are you going? Why are you packing?"His forehead was bandaged, but the wound beneath it still looked raw and ugly. Paired with the panic in his eyes, it made him look both pitiful and absurd.Christina didn't answe

Christina stood in silence for a long time before finally pulling his hands away and walking off."Christina!" His voice cracked as he stopped her, desperation seeping through. "Why won't you give me another chance?"From the moment he saw her again, Lucien had been trying to win her back. Yet, no matter what he said or did, she remained unmoved."You loved me so much before. Why can't you give me one more chance? If it's because the house still carries traces of Vanessa, I'll sell it. If the gifts I gave you in the past make you uncomfortable, I'll buy you new ones. If you think I'm dirty, I'll wash myself over and over again.""But what if it's your heart that's dirty?" Christina's voice cut through his ramblings. He couldn't answer. The words lodged somewhere in his throat, leaving him frozen in place. She gave him a faint smile, one that held no warmth, then turned and left without looking back. The next day, Christina began packing her things, preparing to return to Maelwar

The hatred in Vanessa's eyes was quickly swallowed by fear. During her days of forced rest in the Waldorf household, she had come to understand Lucien's methods all too well. Even with Katie posting guards around her day and night, his people still found ways to slip through the cracks, setting traps to endanger her. If not for her sheer luck, she might have died silently, without a trace.Feeling the trembling in the woman before him, Lucien's eyes darkened. If it hadn't been for Christina's distaste for cruelty, Vanessa wouldn't have made it this far. But now that the child in her womb was gone, she was nothing more than a burden.Disgusted, Lucien let go of her and wiped his hands casually with a handkerchief. "Get out of my sight. As far away as you can. If I ever see you again, you won't get off this easily."Leaving behind his chilling warning, he slammed the door shut. Vanessa shuddered instinctively, her fingers tightening around the thin hospital blanket.…On the other s

He spoke at length, his eyes fixed on her with desperate hope. As if, with just a nod, she could make everything disappear—Vanessa, the unborn child, all of it.Christina stared at the man before her, her gaze clouded with disappointment. After everything, this was what he had to say? He pinned the blame for his betrayal squarely on her. Because he couldn't bear to see her endure the pain of childbirth, he had turned to Vanessa. That was his excuse.Even now, he thought she had left him because of Vanessa. Her silence seemed to him like consent. The thought filled him with growing excitement, and he leaned in, as if he couldn't resist the urge to kiss her."Slap!"Before he could come any closer, her palm struck his face."Lucien, are you out of your mind?"Only then did Christina realize the truth. Lucien had never reflected on his role in their failed marriage. Instead, he believed that eliminating the obstacles would bring her back to him.But the biggest obstacle was himsel

In the dream, Lucien knelt on one knee.He held a wedding ring he had carved by hand, his gaze fixed tenderly on the girl in the white gown before him."Christina, will you marry me? I promise to love you, cherish you, and stay by your side for the rest of my life. I will never betray you."Finally, the girl moved. But when she lifted her face, it wasn't her. It was Vanessa.Yet Lucien didn't seem to notice. He looked at her with the same deep affection, as if nothing had changed.Just as Vanessa opened her mouth to speak, Christina woke up.She stared blankly at the window, unsettled by the strangeness of the dream.Knock, knock."Christina, are you awake?"Her aunt's voice came from outside the door.
