Chapter 3

Author: Blinded By Love
I stood alone outside the county clerk's office for a few minutes, cold wind cutting into me. I thought I'd feel free. Instead, my chest just went hollow.

In a daze, I noticed Cassidy's car pulling back around. I figured she had something else to say. The window rolled down, showing half her face.

"Come with me somewhere," she said, cold.

"Where?" I frowned.

"Preston's welcome-home dinner. He said it's not every day he gets back into the country, and you used to be his best friend. You can't just skip it."

The word "friend" hit like a needle straight to my temple.

Not many people knew that Preston Crowe and I used to be thick as thieves. Back then, Cassidy had been an unpolished nobody, chasing after Preston relentlessly. Preston hadn't wanted anything to do with her, so to shake her off, he'd pushed her onto me.

He'd told me with a grin, "Arnold, Cassidy's a good one. Why don't you give her a try?"

I hadn't known anything about the history between the two of them at the time. I'd just assumed my best friend was setting me up with someone. And all those clumsy little gestures of affection from Cassidy, I'd thought they were meant for me.

It wasn't until Cassidy made her fortune that Preston started regretting it. I saw the text he sent her, begging for a second chance, and that was when I realized I'd only ended up with someone else's leftovers. Cassidy never said a word about it. Once I called him out on it, Preston fled the country and became the one Cassidy could never quite have, the ache she carried in her chest for years.

We arrived at the private room in the restaurant Cassidy had booked. The moment Preston saw me, he smiled like all that old history between us had never happened.

"Arnold, it's been a while. I heard you're divorcing Cassidy?"

He sighed. "And to think I was the one who got you two together. What a shame it didn't work out."

I looked at him and found the whole thing almost funny.

"A shame? That's thanks to you, isn't it?"

Preston's expression stiffened for a beat before he turned to Cassidy, playing the magnanimous one.

"Cassidy, is Arnold still blaming me for going abroad back then? Honestly, I only left so the two of you could be happy together..."

Cassidy frowned and shot me an impatient look.

"Arnold, it's Preston's first day back in the country. Don't put that bitter-husband face of yours on display."

Something clenched in my chest, but I couldn't even feel the pain of it anymore.

"If my face bothers you that much, I'll just leave."

I turned to go, but Preston suddenly caught my hand.

"Arnold, don't be upset. Let me pour you a drink, call it an apology..."

He shoved a glass into my hand. The instant I let go of it, he let out a startled cry. The glass shattered on the floor, and he stumbled backward.

"Preston!"

Cassidy's face went white. She rushed over and shoved me hard out of the way.

I fell from the force of it, catching myself with a hand full of broken glass. Pain shot through my palm. I gritted my teeth and stayed silent, my face draining of color.

"Arnold! How could you push Preston?"

Cassidy helped Preston up, then turned on me with a look vicious enough to eat me alive.

"I didn't push him!"

I braced myself against the table and stood up straight, my brow furrowed, cold sweat breaking out from the pain.

"I saw the whole thing!"

Fury overtook Cassidy, and she raised her hand.

The slap rang out crisp and loud, cutting through the private room. The whole space went quiet.

Even Cassidy seemed stunned for a second, the rage in her eyes freezing in place.

I slowly turned my head back, one side of my face burning.

"Cassidy, whatever's left between us is over for good."

I turned and walked out, spine straight, step by step.

Cassidy started to go after me, but Preston let out a pained grunt. He looked about to lose his footing, so she caught him instead and didn't follow.

Cassidy went rigid like she'd been struck by lightning. "What did you just say? Preston Crowe? Which Preston Crowe?""How many Preston Crowes do you think there are? Your fiance, obviously!"Trying to save himself, Tyler spilled everything."I'm his cousin, Tyler Crowe. He's the one who told me to set up Faith. He's the one who hired those thugs too!""That's not possible..." Cassidy stumbled back a step, her face drained of color. "Preston, he's so genuine, there's no way he'd...""Genuine, my ass!" Tyler, seeing she still didn't believe it, grew desperate. "He's been using you since college! "Him going abroad back then was never about giving you two a clean break. He hooked up with some rich woman overseas. Once she dumped him, that's when he came crawling back to use you as his fallback. "And what happened years ago, Arnold never tried to steal you from him. It was my cousin who hid the love letter you wrote and badmouthed Arnold to you, so you'd think he was some scheming

The words had barely left his mouth when two police officers, who'd clearly been waiting outside, pushed through the door.As they led Faith away, she looked back at me, eyes red-rimmed. "Mr. Kempton, believe me. I really didn't do it."I watched them put her in the police car, my mind a tangled mess, but I nodded at her anyway."I believe you."The boy shot me a smug look and swaggered off after the officers. The studio emptied out, leaving just me, and the silence of it set my nerves on edge. I took a slow breath and pulled out my phone to start looking for a lawyer. That was when footsteps sounded at the door. A group of thugs with tattooed arms shoved their way in, the one in front eyeing me with open malice."Well, look who it is. You're the owner of this place? Business looks like it's doing pretty well."I stepped back on instinct, gripping my phone tight."What do you want?""Nothing much. Just don't like the look of you. Thought we'd rough you up a little."The thug

Cassidy's expression was dark and terrible by the time she got back to the hotel. She kicked over the suitcase sitting by the door.Preston had been playing a game and jumped at the noise. He hurried over, reaching out of habit to take her arm, his voice gone soft and placating."Cassidy, what's got you so worked up? Did Arnold upset you again?"His eyes flicked over, and he sighed, putting on a wounded look. "I keep telling you, Arnold's changed. He'd rather hang around with that poor student than pay you any mind. Who knows, maybe there's already something going on between him and Faith, and he's just hidden it well up until now.""Enough!"Cassidy wrenched her arm free with enough force that Preston stumbled back against the wall."Preston, if you hadn't goaded me into going after Faith, why would Arnold even be angry with me?"For the first time, something like open disgust showed in Cassidy's eyes as she looked at him."I know Arnold better than you ever will. If he actu

I climbed down off the ladder, brushed the dust off my hands, and said evenly, "It's clean here. I like living here just fine. To what do I owe the honor of your visit, Ms. Solen?"Cassidy swept her gaze over the cramped little studio before it landed on Faith, thick with contempt."So this is what a few years of college on my dime gets me? You learned how to seduce your benefactor's husband?"Faith's expression cooled, her hands curling into fists. She took a slow breath and lifted her chin to meet Cassidy's eyes head-on."Ms. Solen, all I've ever felt toward Mr. Kempton is respect and gratitude. Please don't use that kind of language to insult him.""Insult him?" Cassidy let out a laugh like she'd just heard a joke. She pulled a bank card out of her bag and slapped it down at Faith's feet."There's fifty thousand dollars on that. More than enough for someone like you to live on for a few years. Take it and get out of here. Disappear for good."Faith looked down at the card ly

The mansion was a wreck, takeout containers piled high on the coffee table. Preston stood in front of Cassidy, holding a bowl of noodles cooked into a burnt mush."Cassidy, I'm sorry... I wanted to make you something to eat. I'm just not very good at it, and I nearly set the kitchen on fire."He looked hopeless, a bandage stuck across one finger."Arnold used to take such good care of you, and I can't even manage something this simple. Do you think less of me for it?"Cassidy had been on edge all day, unable to reach Arnold. But seeing him look so pitiful, the anger in her fizzled out before it could catch. She sighed, took the bowl from him and set it aside, and pulled his hand into hers."It's fine. This kind of grunt work was never something you should be doing anyway. Just call the housekeeper next time."Preston pulled her into his arms, his voice going soft."I just worry about you. You've been frowning so much lately... are you still thinking about Arnold?"Cassidy's bod

After that day, I took Faith away from her village and into a city in a neighboring state. I rented a two-bedroom apartment there and got Faith enrolled as an auditing transfer student at the best university in the area, to prepare for next year's exams.Time moved fast. Before I knew it, a month was almost up.My phone buzzed with a text from the county clerk's office.[Mr. Kempton, your divorce procedures with Ms. Cassidy Solen will end in three days. If neither party objects, the system will process your divorce automatically, and an electronic certificate will be sent to your email. To withdraw the filing, please visit the registration office within three days.]I looked at the message, my finger hovering over the screen for a second. Then I swiped it away and turned my phone off.In Vampton City, Cassidy sat in her living room, empty bottles scattered around her feet. She'd been dragging Preston all over the world, from yacht parties to galas to auctions, indulging in every
