Chapter 1

Author: E. L. Knox
Before being reborn, I gave up on my future to pursue the affections of the most popular young man in high school. I ended up working as a corporate slave for him, and his humiliation of me led to my death.

After my rebirth, I wanted to make that scumbag apologize to me a hundred times in Clock Square.

I used to be a lovesick fool who would even forsake my future for the sake of love.

In my sophomore year of high school, I gave up on getting guaranteed high scores in literature and history. Instead, I chose to study physics and calculus to win the affections of Jack Montgomery, my high school's heartthrob.

In the end, attending physics class felt like listening to a foreign language to me. While the teacher spoke passionately from the podium, I felt like I was sitting on pins and needles.

The laws of motion? Quantum theory? Electromagnetic field theory?

I had no idea what any of those were.

It only took one semester for me to go from being in the top 50 in my grade to below 300th place.

It was inevitable that I would fail terribly when applying to a university. I ended up attending a community college—the kind of place one simply needed to pay to get into.

On the other hand, Jack relied on his family connections to attend a top business university in Ezelia. With such an impressive university on his resume, he returned from abroad to become a corporate executive.

The most outrageous thing to happen was that he became my direct superior.

During the welcome reception for the new executive, I wanted nothing more than to hide myself in the bathroom. Yet, the inevitable would happen eventually.

Jack walked over to me with a glass of champagne in hand, a familiar expression of mocking on his face. "Hey, Emma. I heard that you were boasting about wanting to get into Hareford University back in high school."

Someone next to me immediately said loudly, "Community college is also a form of university!"

Harsh laughter erupted throughout the reception hall.

Jack slowly swirled his champagne glass. "Are you now feeling the consequences of being a lovesick fool? Why didn't this cross your mind back when you were running after me all the time?"

I clenched my fists tightly, feeling my nails dig into my palms.

He continued relentlessly, "By the way, what did you score for your SATs again? 980 points? Oh, no, it was 950 points. You need 1600 points to score full marks, yet you didn't even get 1000 points. You were among the bottom 25% of candidates."

I stood up. "Enough."

Jack's smile widened. "What's wrong? Did I hit a sore spot? Just face reality, Emma. Someone like you will always be a bottom feeder. You should be honored to work for me."

I took a deep breath. Just as I was about to reply, my phone started vibrating wildly. The WhatsApp group chat consisting of my high school classmates was exploding with messages.

"Oh my god! Is the new employee in Jack's company really Emma?"

"That clinger? Oh, that's hilarious! She's really working for him."

"She deserves it for setting her sights on someone far out of her league."

"Allowing yourself to be blinded by love will only ruin you. Hahaha!"

I left the group chat expressionlessly.

Late that night, I dragged my exhausted body back to my cramped studio apartment.

My desk was piled high with study materials for the Graduate Management Admission Test—my last resort. As long as I managed to get into a business university and obtained a Master's degree in business, I'd be able to turn my life around.

The papers were covered in densely written mathematical equations. I'd truly ruined my mathematical foundation by choosing to pursue science back then. After downing my fifth espresso, I continued to study hard.

At 3:00 am, I suddenly felt severe pain in my heart. My pen clattered to the floor, and my vision turned black.

Fuck! God was really pulling my leg by making me die of overwork halfway through my GMATs.

Ethan sent me a video call invitation. When I picked up, he said, "Congratulations, future Hareford student.""Thank you, MIT genius," I replied cheerily."Is there any gift you want?" he asked."You."The words slipped out of my mouth without thought. He was stunned for a moment, after which he smiled and said, "Sure."It was my turn to be dazed. "Huh?"He looked seriously at me. "I said, 'Sure.' Will you be my girlfriend, Emma?"I instantly flushed red. "W-Why are you suddenly—"He cut me off. "It's not sudden. I've been waiting for this day since the first time you asked me to tutor you.""Then why didn't you say anything before?"He raised an eyebrow at me. "Didn't you say you'd discuss it after getting into Hareford? Well, you've now made it. Do you not want to be my girlfriend?""I do! Of course, I do!" I replied loudly. He smiled. "My mother has cooked a feast and is waiting for your arrival."I was stupefied. "Your mother?""Yes. She's been wanting to meet you."

After that day, Jack and Sarah went viral on social media. The caption of the trending video was very attention-grabbing. "Riveria High School heartthrob crushed by MIT genius in public. "Some people should just wait and see who exactly actually makes it into a Vine League university!"I sent a screenshot of the post to Ethan. "He's lost it.""How childish," Ethan replied immediately."Aren't you also watching the drama unfold?""Focus on your studies."I smiled and flipped through my university entrance exam exercise book. There were still six months left until the university entrance exams. My goal was very clear—get into Hareford University and also ensur

I didn't go anywhere during the two months of summer vacation. Instead, I only concentrated on studying Ethan's notes.Mom couldn't stand seeing me like that anymore and asked worriedly, "You don't have to study so hard, do you, honey?"I didn't even look up as I answered, "I want to get into Hareford University, so yes!""Hareford?" Mom asked in shock."Yes! I have to get in!"…Just after the start of my senior year, I heard an even more exciting piece of news—Ethan had won first prize in the international math competition and had been admitted into MIT in advance. This time, the whole school wasn't just shocked but completely floored."Holy cow! Ethan turned out to be an actual genius!""I used to mock him before, but looking back on that now, I was the real idiot!""He's gone to MIT while we're still struggling out here. Comparing ourselves to others really is a recipe for misery!"I sent Ethan a message as soon as I heard the news."Congratulations, Mr. Genius!""Meet

The next day, I received a call from Riveria High School. The principal, Howard Letterman, personally apologized to me and invited me back to school.I refused him outright. "I'm afraid a humble student like me is a poor fit for a sophisticated school like yours, Mr. Letterman."After hanging up on him, Mom and I went to Linkon High School. After completing the necessary paperwork, I was strolling around the school when I suddenly caught sight of a familiar figure.Ethan was sleeping against a tree, and the sunlight was shining on his face through the gaps in the leaves.I walked over, calling out, "Hey! Wake up."He opened his eyes and was stunned to see me. "Why are you here?"I sat down next to Ethan. "I transferred here. How about we make a deal, Ethan?""What deal?""Teach me math for 200 dollars an hour," I offered outright. He snorted. "Do I look like someone who's short of money?"I gazed solemnly at him. "I'm aware you're amazing, and I also know why you've given up

I felt chilled to my core.I enunciated each word slowly as I said, "I didn't cheat. It's the teacher who slandered me."Mom was even more furious. "Are you still trying to make excuses? Would the school slander you for no reason?"I sneered. "Yes, I know. In your eyes, the teachers are all saints, and I'm the only one who's trash.""You—"I roared back, "Enough! I'm not staying another day under this roof!"I promptly turned and ran, turning a deaf ear to Mom's shouts from behind me.Tears blurred my vision. I didn't know how long I ran, but I eventually stopped in the doorway of an internet cafe.I walked in and turned on a computer, but I didn't know what to do once I was seated. In the end, I took a math exercise book out of my school bag.I couldn't slack off. Even if the whole world didn't believe in me, I would still believe in myself. This was my life and nobody else's!Several people nearby looked dumbfounded. I outdid myself in the second midterm exam, scoring an A+ in Borisian, an A+ in history, an A in literary analysis, and a B+ in mathematics. My overall grade point average was 3.85.I rejoiced. With these grades, getting into a Vine League university was more than just a pipe dream! As I was scrolling through Instagram that night, a post from Riveria High School's anonymous whistleblowing account suddenly started trending. The headline read, "Shocking! What's behind the explosive increase in GPA? Cheating or forgery?"I tapped on the post and saw that it was about me.The article went on about how I must have cheated to have raised my Borisian grade from D to A+ and how I definitely used my phone because my seat was in a blind spot out of view of the surveillance cameras. It also brought up moral corruption and how I was giving the school a bad reputation.Everything was described in vivid detail. Someone who was unaware of the situation would think the writer had seen everythin
