Chapter 5

Auteur: Nameless
Still holding the divorce papers in my hand, I felt as though a bolt of lightning had struck me when the truth finally sank in.

Not only had the three years of happiness been a lie, but even our marriage certificate was fake.

All those years of love had meant nothing.

I turned away in despair, unable to bear another word of their conversation, and asked Lucas to take me out.

"Sorry. It looks like the marriage was never registered, so there's no need for a divorce. I'll still pay your fee as agreed. Thank you for your help."

After Lucas wheeled me back to my hospital room, Ben's panicked voice rang out.

"Mr. Reed, you're finally back! I looked everywhere for you. I was about to call the police."

He was so relieved that tears streamed down his face.

"I'm fine. A friend came to see me and took me for a walk."

Lucas handed me back over to him, looking at me with sympathy. "Mr. Reed… please take care of yourself."

After Lucas left, I curled up on the hospital bed, replaying everything I had just heard. Memories came flooding back.

Vivian and I had known each other for seven years, dated for four, and supposedly been married for three. She had always been devoted to me, taking care of me in every possible way and slowly drawing me deeper into the relationship.

Three years ago, I'd suffered a severe hand injury. If she hadn't stayed by my side, I might never have made it through.

Two years ago, I'd lost the ability to have children, forcing us to abandon the plans we'd made to start a family. So she had a tubal ligation, too, swearing that we'd remain childfree for the rest of our lives.

"I love you."

"I'm here for you."

I used to think her words were a gift from heaven. Now I realized they had all been part of her plan.

If this accident hadn't happened, if my eye hadn't been forcibly removed, I might have lived the rest of my life without ever knowing the truth.

Years of suppressed pain finally overwhelmed me, and I broke down sobbing.

Ben assumed I was in unbearable pain and rushed to get my doctor.

The moment I heard his familiar voice, I lost control.

"Get out! Are you happy now? Happy watching me become a useless cripple? You performed every surgery I've had over the past three years. If you can't fix this, then just kill me!"

William turned to Ben. "His emotions are running high. Please step outside. Don't come back in without my permission."

Ben gave me a wary look before quickly leaving the room.

Once the door closed, William locked it.

"Mr. Reed, I'm sorry. But none of this was my choice. If I refused, another doctor would have performed the surgeries.

"I didn't remove your entire eye. I only took your cornea. Ms. Rhodes doesn't know about that. I've already submitted my resignation. Once it's approved, I'll leave this hospital.

"Ms. Rhodes isn't someone you should trust with your life. If you want to survive, get a lawyer and fight her in court. That's all I can tell you."

William left with a troubled expression.

I touched the bandages over my eyes, and silent tears finally slipped down my face. As long as there was still a chance I could see again, there was still hope for my life.

I took out my phone and called my uncle, who lived abroad. I asked him to book me a flight to Westoria for the following week.

I told him that a friend had lost his sight and asked him to keep an eye out for any available cornea donations at hospitals there.

Once everything was arranged, I finally composed myself and called Ben back in.

That evening, Vivian arrived as expected, bringing the stew she claimed she had spent eight hours making. She gently fed it to me spoonful by spoonful, every word filled with concern.

The nurses who came to change my medication saw the scene and praised her for being such a devoted wife.

I remained unmoved, managing only a bitter, helpless smile.

"Please, don't take my eyes!"Vivian stepped forward, grabbed Andrew by the head, and forced him to look at her. "What? It hurts now?" she hissed."When you spent years arranging 'accidents' that left Julian with a broken hand, unable to have children, and blind, where was your compassion then?" She turned to the others and ordered, "Do it. I want you to experience every bit of what Julian went through!"Andrew's hands and legs were severely injured, his eyes were gouged out, and he could no longer speak.Vivian had him dumped at a private hospital and left him there to recover on his own. She kept him alive so he could experience the suffering Julian had endured—the pain of being unable to see or speak. But revenge brought Vivian no satisfaction. It only gave her guilty conscience a small measure of peace. Vivian also sent Celine to an orphanage for real this time. Meanwhile, things weren't going well for Vivian, either. The press conference where she had planned to ann

To win Vivian over back then, Andrew had signed a prenuptial agreement with her. Even after they married, he would have no claim to any of her family's wealth. He thought he had plenty of time to slowly persuade her to sign a new agreement dividing their assets. But he never expected Vivian to already have a boyfriend she had been dating for years. Now that I was out of the picture, Andrew planned to use their daughter as leverage to get back into Vivian's life and eventually take control of her company. But he had got it wrong. After calming Celine down, Andrew tried to comfort Vivian, only to be harshly rebuked. "What are you doing bringing the kid here? Haven't things gotten chaotic enough? I know exactly what you're after. Let me make this clear, Andrew. You can forget about it!"Cece has only one father, and that's Julian! We may be married, but we never lived together. In every sense that matters, Julian is my only husband! "And I can end this marriage whenever I want

"What? A suicide note?"Vivian felt the world spin around her, and the phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor. Her face went deathly pale as she grabbed Alex by the collar and demanded, "W-What did you say? What happened to Julian?"She had completely lost her composure, and every humiliating moment was being broadcast live. Andrew appeared at some point and caught Vivian as she nearly collapsed. "There are so many reporters here, and the livestream is still on. Pull yourself together." But Vivian no longer cared about appearances. She shoved him aside and continued demanding answers from Alex. After taking a moment to collect himself, Alex stammered, "Ms. Rhodes… It's true. The housekeeper found it while cleaning his room. She sent me a photo. Everything is there."Vivian shakily picked up the phone and opened the note. "Vivian, by the time you read this letter, I will already be gone. "I never wanted to burden you, so I went to the courthouse to petition for a

" I shouldn't have acted the way I did," Vivian said on the phone. "I'll make it up to you tonight. If you want, I'll even write you an apology letter. "The day after tomorrow, I'm holding a press conference. I'll give you half of my company's shares. I want you to see just how sincere I am and how much I love you. From now on, we'll live a good life together."For the next two days, I'll make sure Cece is happy. Then, the day after tomorrow, I'll take her out." Even at this point, she was still putting on an act. She had pretended to love me for seven years, and I had spent seven years believing her. Now, it was finally time to end it. "Okay. I'll have a surprise for you the day after tomorrow, too." After hanging up, I took out my SIM card, snapped it in half, and threw it in the trash. In just a little over ten hours, nothing in this life would have anything to do with me anymore. Vivian assumed I had finally forgiven her. Throughout the countless arguments we'd had, al

"I understand. I won't let you down," Andrew assured her. "Good," Vivian said. "Julian has been waiting outside long enough. I'll be taking our daughter home."Upon hearing that, I frantically looked for somewhere to hide, only to trip and fall. I heard the door open. I was trying to figure out how to pretend I hadn't heard anything when I recognized Andrew's voice. "It's nothing. The cat knocked something over. Talk to Cece. I'll be there in a minute." Andrew stepped in front of me, blocking Vivian's view. Once she left, his attitude changed immediately. "So, you heard everything. I might as well tell you. Cece is my daughter with Vivian. How does it feel? You spent three years by her side, and she still wouldn't give you a child. "Oh, right. I forgot. You can't have children. And now you have to raise your wife's lover's child. I almost feel sorry for you."Vivian hasn't told you yet, has she? We're legally married. You're actually the homewrecker. If you know what'

Back then, I probably would have been moved to tears by such gestures from Vivian. Now, I only found them ridiculous. She'd spent the entire day in Andrew's room, keeping her husband and daughter company. Andrew had a luxury VIP suite. I only had a private room for some peace. The stew was probably made by a private chef she'd hired for Andrew, with an extra portion prepared for me. "Jules, do you like kids?" she asked. "I feel like our home is a little too quiet. How about we adopt a child from an orphanage to keep you company? You've always loved kids. Don't you want to be a dad?" Her words made my anger boil. "Do you want one? If you do, we can adopt." A week later, Vivian took me to the so-called orphanage. After a long, winding drive, we finally arrived. As soon as the car door opened, a sweet voice called from a distance. "Mommy! You're finally here! I missed you so much!""Cece, I miss you too." Vivian helped me out of the car, then bent down and picked up the
