Chapter 8

Autor: Nameless
" I shouldn't have acted the way I did," Vivian said on the phone. "I'll make it up to you tonight. If you want, I'll even write you an apology letter.

"The day after tomorrow, I'm holding a press conference. I'll give you half of my company's shares. I want you to see just how sincere I am and how much I love you. From now on, we'll live a good life together.

"For the next two days, I'll make sure Cece is happy. Then, the day after tomorrow, I'll take her out."

Even at this point, she was still putting on an act. She had pretended to love me for seven years, and I had spent seven years believing her.

Now, it was finally time to end it.

"Okay. I'll have a surprise for you the day after tomorrow, too."

After hanging up, I took out my SIM card, snapped it in half, and threw it in the trash. In just a little over ten hours, nothing in this life would have anything to do with me anymore.

Vivian assumed I had finally forgiven her. Throughout the countless arguments we'd had, all it ever took was a small apology from her to make my anger disappear.

Hearing that I was preparing a surprise for her, Vivian suddenly found herself looking forward to it. She decided to put all her attention into the upcoming press conference.

That day, she planned to publicly announce our marriage, transfer 60% of her company's shares to me, and another 20% to her daughter, Celine.

She had even planned to secretly register our marriage after the press conference, using taking photos as an excuse to get me there.

On the day of the press conference, Vivian was busy greeting the media, hoping they would livestream the entire event. She wanted everyone to know how much she loved me and finally give me the sense of security she thought I needed.

Alex and several executives repeatedly asked her, "Ms. Rhodes, are you really sure you want to transfer 60% of the company to Mr. Reed?

"You built this company from the ground up. He's blind now and doesn't understand the business. Isn't this too risky?"

Vivian refused to back down.

"He's my husband. This is my way of making it up to him. I'm only giving him the shares. I'll still run the company," she said firmly. "If you can't accept that, you can resign. I'll approve it immediately."

The executives and Alex had no choice but to reluctantly go along with it.

Once everything was arranged, Vivian picked up her phone and sent me a voice message. "Jules, did the driver pick you up? Are you on your way?"

One minute passed.

Then two.

Then three…

I still didn't reply.

Vivian suddenly felt uneasy. She remembered that I was blind now and figured I might not be using my phone much anymore.

So she called me. But the automated message saying I couldn't be reached played on and on.

Each unanswered call rang in her ears like a funeral bell.

Maybe my phone had died. Maybe I'd put it on silent.

Even though I was blind, there were plenty of household staff at home. And she had already sent a driver to pick me up. Nothing could have happened to me.

At least, that was what she told herself.

Then she remembered the surprise I had promised her.

But the more she tried to reassure herself, the stronger her unease became.

The reporters outside were already urging her to start the press conference.

She sent the driver another voice message, asking when he would arrive. Then, with the reporters pressing her to begin, she hurried to the press conference.

The moment she was ready to go on stage, the driver called.

"Ms. Rhodes, Mr. Reed isn't home. I've searched everywhere. He's gone."

Vivian completely lost her composure. "Then find him! He can't see. What if something happened to him? Get people out there and search the entire city!"

The moment she hung up, Alex came rushing over, his face deathly pale.

"Something's wrong, Ms. Rhodes. We found a suicide note from Mr. Reed, and he's been missing for two days."

"Please, don't take my eyes!"Vivian stepped forward, grabbed Andrew by the head, and forced him to look at her. "What? It hurts now?" she hissed."When you spent years arranging 'accidents' that left Julian with a broken hand, unable to have children, and blind, where was your compassion then?" She turned to the others and ordered, "Do it. I want you to experience every bit of what Julian went through!"Andrew's hands and legs were severely injured, his eyes were gouged out, and he could no longer speak.Vivian had him dumped at a private hospital and left him there to recover on his own. She kept him alive so he could experience the suffering Julian had endured—the pain of being unable to see or speak. But revenge brought Vivian no satisfaction. It only gave her guilty conscience a small measure of peace. Vivian also sent Celine to an orphanage for real this time. Meanwhile, things weren't going well for Vivian, either. The press conference where she had planned to ann

To win Vivian over back then, Andrew had signed a prenuptial agreement with her. Even after they married, he would have no claim to any of her family's wealth. He thought he had plenty of time to slowly persuade her to sign a new agreement dividing their assets. But he never expected Vivian to already have a boyfriend she had been dating for years. Now that I was out of the picture, Andrew planned to use their daughter as leverage to get back into Vivian's life and eventually take control of her company. But he had got it wrong. After calming Celine down, Andrew tried to comfort Vivian, only to be harshly rebuked. "What are you doing bringing the kid here? Haven't things gotten chaotic enough? I know exactly what you're after. Let me make this clear, Andrew. You can forget about it!"Cece has only one father, and that's Julian! We may be married, but we never lived together. In every sense that matters, Julian is my only husband! "And I can end this marriage whenever I want

"What? A suicide note?"Vivian felt the world spin around her, and the phone slipped from her hand and hit the floor. Her face went deathly pale as she grabbed Alex by the collar and demanded, "W-What did you say? What happened to Julian?"She had completely lost her composure, and every humiliating moment was being broadcast live. Andrew appeared at some point and caught Vivian as she nearly collapsed. "There are so many reporters here, and the livestream is still on. Pull yourself together." But Vivian no longer cared about appearances. She shoved him aside and continued demanding answers from Alex. After taking a moment to collect himself, Alex stammered, "Ms. Rhodes… It's true. The housekeeper found it while cleaning his room. She sent me a photo. Everything is there."Vivian shakily picked up the phone and opened the note. "Vivian, by the time you read this letter, I will already be gone. "I never wanted to burden you, so I went to the courthouse to petition for a

"I understand. I won't let you down," Andrew assured her. "Good," Vivian said. "Julian has been waiting outside long enough. I'll be taking our daughter home."Upon hearing that, I frantically looked for somewhere to hide, only to trip and fall. I heard the door open. I was trying to figure out how to pretend I hadn't heard anything when I recognized Andrew's voice. "It's nothing. The cat knocked something over. Talk to Cece. I'll be there in a minute." Andrew stepped in front of me, blocking Vivian's view. Once she left, his attitude changed immediately. "So, you heard everything. I might as well tell you. Cece is my daughter with Vivian. How does it feel? You spent three years by her side, and she still wouldn't give you a child. "Oh, right. I forgot. You can't have children. And now you have to raise your wife's lover's child. I almost feel sorry for you."Vivian hasn't told you yet, has she? We're legally married. You're actually the homewrecker. If you know what'

Back then, I probably would have been moved to tears by such gestures from Vivian. Now, I only found them ridiculous. She'd spent the entire day in Andrew's room, keeping her husband and daughter company. Andrew had a luxury VIP suite. I only had a private room for some peace. The stew was probably made by a private chef she'd hired for Andrew, with an extra portion prepared for me. "Jules, do you like kids?" she asked. "I feel like our home is a little too quiet. How about we adopt a child from an orphanage to keep you company? You've always loved kids. Don't you want to be a dad?" Her words made my anger boil. "Do you want one? If you do, we can adopt." A week later, Vivian took me to the so-called orphanage. After a long, winding drive, we finally arrived. As soon as the car door opened, a sweet voice called from a distance. "Mommy! You're finally here! I missed you so much!""Cece, I miss you too." Vivian helped me out of the car, then bent down and picked up the
