Chapter 3

Author: Celebrant
I lowered my head as I pretended it did not bother me by smiling and nodding, but in fact, it hurt me so much that I could hardly breathe. Chris seemed to notice something wrong with me, and he held my hand guiltily.

"It's our anniversary tomorrow. How about visiting the beach in advance? We can watch the stars while lying down on the beach and see the sunrise tomorrow."

I nodded in agreement.

During our journey to the beach, Chris kept talking about how he wanted to build a large theme park for our child once the IVF was a success. I used to share with him happily about how our lives would be once our child was born, but this time, I stayed silent.

It was already dark when we arrived at the beach. His phone started to ring, and a tender look appeared on his face when he picked up the call. However, he quickly frowned and looked hesitantly at me.

I tried my best to smile at him. "You should leave if you're busy. I'm fine on my own."

"I'm so sorry, I…"

"It's fine. I know you're busy handling the family's affairs. I'll wait for you here."

Chris hugged me. "I knew you'd understand."

Tears stream down my face uncontrollably as I watch him leave. That call must have been from Yvonne, as she was the only person whom Chris would treat with such care.

I got onto the boat and felt the salty air of the sea breeze hit my face as my hair billowed messily in the wind. The waves hitting the rocks at a distance sounded like the crash of broken promises.

I took out my phone to look at Yvonne's social media post. [He came running to my side from the other end of the city just to cook for me. This is what it feels like to be loved!]

The comments were filled with envious voices.

[Your Don really pampers you! I can't believe he's making barbecue for you with his own hands!]

[The Don is the kind of man a woman should marry!"

My gaze fell onto the custom-made watch on the man's wrist in the photo. It was the watch that had never left Chris' side in the last five years, the very same one with her name engraved in it.

I called his number, but it was Yvonne who picked up. "Are you still waiting for Chris to watch the stars and sunrise with you? You should stop waiting because he won't be showing up."

Tears started to well in my eyes as she taunted, "What a failure you are as a woman. It's been years, and you still haven't managed to get him to fall for you. You were dumped during your engagement party, and you were dumped again during your anniversary…"

I hung up before she finished.

I went to the boat crew to get the keys to steer the boat away from the shore by myself. I waited as I lay down on the deck to watch the stars in the sky, but my phone never rang. My heart felt colder than the chilling sea breeze.

Years of our happy times together flashed through my mind like a film reel. The memories felt particularly sarcastic as I was reminded of how much trust and love I had given him. When the first rays of sunlight appeared, I called his phone, but no one picked up.

I clicked into my mailbox to send out two emails with the subjects, 'The Research Process of the Super Hemostatic Agent: From Start to Results' and 'A Goodbye Letter to Chris Linari'. After that, I raised my phone and flung it into the sea without hesitation.

I threw out the phone like a curveball and saw it vanish into the waves. It did not even make a splash.

It was like all those years when I had given my heart to Chris. It vanished quietly without making a sound but sank so deep into the dark depths where one could hardly breathe.

I could almost hear my five years' worth of happiness break into pieces as the freezing seawater rose up to my chest. The embraces, kisses, and promises that we shared floated far out into the sea along with the waves and out of my grasp.

I closed my eyes and allowed myself to sink into the sea. I was finally able to break free.

I felt nothing as I watched Chris acting despondent about the situation. My heart was like a still lake without ripples. The wedding ceremony was simple, but warm. Zack held my hand as he said to me nervously but with great sincerity, "Thank you for choosing me, Nina."I smiled in return, feeling safe and happy with him. The villagers sang and danced at the wedding, and the medical station was filled with happiness and joy as the children played and laughed in the crowd. When the wedding was over, I went to Chris, who was standing all alone outside the tent. He looked haggard with stubble all over his face and a blank look in his eyes. "It's been a while," I said softly.Chris jumped slightly, and tears welled in his eyes. "Can we go back to how it was, Nina? I'll give up everything and stay here with you." His voice was filled with desperation as he pleaded with me, as if trying to grasp his last hope.I shook my head gently and replied calmly, but with conviction, "Nina Secco i

Several years passed by swiftly, and I had fully immersed myself in the lands of Andora. My fair skin had now turned a healthy bronze, and my face bore traces of the stronger person I had become. One day, an international media team arrived at our medical station to shoot a documentary about the medical aid given in war-torn countries. As a core member of the team, it was unavoidable that I had to appear on camera, but it did not bother me. I continued conducting surgeries, trained local medical personnel, and made medical visits to every village as usual. I thought this was a minor interruption in my daily life that would blow over very quickly. However, I did not expect this documentary to create a huge commotion online after it was broadcast. A comment landed online that created a huge wave in the otherwise calm sea of the internet. [Isn't that Dr. Nina Secco who jumped into the sea five years ago? She didn't die and is now a doctor in Andora!]The comment spread like wildfi

Meanwhile, my life started to get on track far away in Andora. I would get busy until late at night in the simple medical station, handling all sorts of difficult patient cases. There were gunshot wounds, malaria, difficult childbirths… Every task was a challenge to my medical skills and willpower. When I was too exhausted to lift a finger, I would fall asleep right away on the makeshift beds. Life was tough, but the villagers gave me strength and warmth to move on. Any family that made a good dish that day would always remember to bring me some. Even the children would bring me bouquets of wildflowers at dawn or in the evening and place them quietly in front of my tent. Every innocent smile placed happiness in my heart.Gradually, I started to get used to the simple medical conditions of this place and the constant state of emergency I had to be in to help the dying and injured while gunshots were fired in the background. Things started to get easier at work as I managed to buil

Chris looked at Yvonne with disgust as he suddenly stood up to slap her hard. The sound echoed loudly in the air. "Nina would never have left if it weren't for you! An evil woman like you doesn't deserve any pity!"Yvonne held her hand to her cheek as tears fell from her eyes. She wailed, "You hit me! How dare you hit me?" She tried to lunge at Chris to hit him, but his bodyguards held her back and dragged her out of the house.Chris said angrily, "From this day onward, I have nothing to do with Yvonne Quinto. Anyone who helps her will be considered my enemy!"The Perettis had turned their backs on Yvonne, and now, Chris had left her in the lurch. She had fallen from the top spot of her social status, and everyone who had once tagged alongside wherever she went now avoided her like the plague. That was when a lawyer, Melissa Wagner, knocked on the villa's door. Chris opened the door with an exhausted look on his face, and Melissa informed him solemnly, "Mr. Linari, Ms. Secco left

Yvonne arrived after Chris, and she went to his side while pretending to be concerned. "Don't worry, Chris. She's just throwing a tantrum. She'll probably show up soon."Chris jerked back, shooting daggers at her with a cold look in his eyes. "Shut up! If you hadn't delayed my time by making me cook for you, I wouldn't have been away from her! Nina wouldn't have fallen into the sea if I had been here on time…" His voice was hoarse, and he was growling at the end of the sentence. It was the first time he had lost his temper at Yvonne. He no longer treated her with the tenderness she was used to, even going as far as refusing to give in to her.Yvonne shuddered with fright, and her bodyguards immediately stepped forward. She turned pale, and her lips quivered, not daring to say another word.Chris continued ignoring her as he turned away to continue staring at the sea, refusing to look away for even a second. He stood watch at the beach the entire night as he trembled from the stron

When I woke up next, the plane had landed at an international airport in Andora. I was immediately hit by the heatwave and dust, and my skin was burning from the hot sun. The man in charge of arranging my 'death' took me to the Andoran branch of the International Medical Organization as I requested. The car drove on the bumpy road for almost two hours before it finally stopped in front of a simple-looking tent. A few children ran barefoot outside the tent. Their faces were covered with dirt, but their smiles were exceptionally bright. I took a deep breath as I lugged my luggage into the biggest tent.It was filled with wounded villagers. Some of them were trying to stop their wounds from bleeding, while others were hugging their feverish children. The air was filled with dust and the scent of blood. "Are you the new doctor, Dr. Secco?" A local nurse with dark skin and bright eyes came up to me.She was wearing a white nurse's uniform that looked like it had been washed one too
