Chapter 3

Author: Flowing Water
“Which research center would that be?”

As I did not want to give in, I persisted in asking.

I heard a male voice saying, “Luna, please don’t be angry. Something urgent must’ve happened with Declan for him to look for you.

“We’re going on our trip tomorrow. You should settle everything by today.”

Luna finally suppressed her anger.

She said in a slightly irritated tone, “Declan, I know it’s my fault for not keeping my promise, but my project is really urgent.

“After this project ends, I’ll submit my time-off report again to go back home to spend some time with you.”

“Luna.”

My voice was very soft.

“I called your supervisor, and he said that they never even had an overseas assignment.

“So where have you been in the past three years? Who are you living with?”

I had spoken every single word through gritted teeth.

Luna suddenly sounded a little frantic.

She stayed quiet for a really long time. At one point, I even thought she would just end the call.

Finally, in seemingly reckless abandon, she answered with a hoarse voice, “That’s right, I’m still here in the same city for the past three years. I never went overseas. But I do have a strong reason for doing this.

“Don’t worry, Declan. I remember that I’m still your wife.

“Give me two more weeks. I’ll come back and explain it to you in person.”

I immediately rejected her.

“I want to listen to your explanation now.”

“Declan!”

Luna raised her voice. She sounded angry that I had exposed her lie.

“Can you stop being this difficult?

“I told you I just need another two weeks. What else do you want from me?”

She was the one who lied to me, but she made it seem like I was being unreasonable.

I felt sad for myself. I found the whole thing ridiculous.

The woman that I had loved for ten years had lied to me for three years.

She had treated me like a complete idiot as she abused my trust.

“Luna—”

I just spoke when Luna interrupted me fiercely, “That’s all. If you have anything else to say, you can say it in two weeks.”

After that, she hung up on me.

When I called again, the call no longer got through.

She had blocked me.

I boiled with rage.

Just as I was about to get out of the car, my phone buzzed.

It was a text message from an unknown number.

[Declan, I’m Julian. Luna has been with me for the past three years. I hope you don’t misunderstand her.]

Before I could reply to him, he sent another two text messages.

[I’m sorry, Declan. I never meant to want Luna’s company for this long. It’s just that I have leukemia, and I might die soon. I just wanted to make up for lost time before I die.]

[If you’re angry, lash it out at me. Luna’s innocent. She was just too kind.]

Even though he seemed to be explaining their situation to me in these text messages, it was concrete evidence that Luna had been cheating on me.

Apparently, Julian was afraid that I would not believe him, so he sent a medical diagnosis report and a photo to me.

In the photo, he was lying on the hospital bed in his hospital gown. Luna was carefully shelling pistachios for him

Was Luna not allergic to tree nuts?

One time, I had accidentally touched her cup after shelling pistachios, and she had yelled at me.

She once thought that losing me would not affect her. But she felt her heart breaking after it happened. Too bad, it was all too late. She had lost the version of me who would always love her, cherish her, and forgive her no matter what she did. I did not know if she was trying to protect the very last bit of her dignity. Luna no longer continued her tantrum. Instead, she left. After that day, she stopped appearing. Three days later, the lawyer gave me a call and informed me that Luna had already signed the divorce papers. I met Luna one last time before the city hall. We were both calm. We were no longer fighting or crying. We completed the rest of the divorce proceedings like two strangers. The staff members passed us the finalized documents. The papers felt cold in our hands. I walked out, and the sun felt warm against my skin. Luna suddenly turned around and stared at me with teary eyes. “Declan, I’m sorry. “I wish you all the best for your future.”

I picked up a pen and wrote on the paper. With every stroke, I felt a stabbing pain in my heart. I had loved Luna for ten years. My biggest wish in the past was to be with her forever. However, I could only end the marriage. Luna suddenly rushed over and hugged me from the back. She sobbed violently. “Declan, please don’t do this. Please, please don’t divorce me.“I’ve learned from my mistake. I won’t do that again, please forgive me, alright…”I carefully pried her fingers away as I looked down. My voice was cold. “Sign the papers. Then, leave with your belongings. “I will no longer stay in this neighborhood. Tomorrow, an agent will come over and view the house.“Don’t you want to spend the rest of your life with Julian? I’ll make it come true.”However, Luna did not want to sign it. She tore the divorce papers into pieces and asked me to take some time to calm down before she ran away. I really could not understand her. Did she not want to spend the rest of

It was Luna. When I saw her standing at the door looking uneasy, I mocked her. “Ah, so you know your way back home.“Good timing, I’ve already packed up all your stuff. You can just take them away.”Luna pretended that she had not heard that. Instead, she spoke to me with teary eyes. “Declan, don’t act this way. I’m scared.“Please calm down, alright? I’m here tonight to talk to you.”After hearing that, I sneered. Then, I sat on the couch and lit a cigarette. In the past, I knew Luna did not like the smell of cigarettes, so I had never smoked at home. Even when I smoked outside, I would clean myself up in the washroom to make sure I no longer smelled before I entered our bedroom. I was afraid that she would be upset. However, her emotions no longer had anything to do with me. “Luna, we’ve been married for five years, and I never once did you any wrong throughout.”My voice was hoarse, and I was not sure if it was from smoking or from my exhaustion. “I loved you

“Stop it, stop reading it!” Luna screamed and snatched the journal away from me. Then, she rolled down the window and threw it away. I did not stop Luna. Instead, I looked at her coldly. She could discard and destroy the journal, but it did not erase the past. The hurt she had caused me was irreversible. Besides, I had already taken photos of all the content in that journal.Luna looked at me with teary eyes. I no longer looked at her. Instead, I leaned back against the seat and shut my eyes. I had not slept for almost three full days. My body was extremely exhausted, but my brain was strangely alert. When Luna saw that I no longer wanted to speak, she did not force a conversation. Only the beeping sound from the medical equipment could be heard in the ambulance. Very soon, we arrived at the hospital. After the doctor ran a thorough examination on Julian, he glared at us furiously. “What nonsense is this?“If this is just an act, please don’t simply call an

Mr. Ford was afraid that the situation would escalate, so he still sent Julian to the hospital. However, on the way there, he no longer looked at Luna kindly as he always did before. Even though everyone said that he was old, it did not mean he could not tell the obvious. However, Luna did not care how Mr. Ford looked at her. Ever since she saw the journal that she had hidden in her research lab, she had been absent-minded. Her face immediately turned pale, and she could not hide the panic in her eyes. “Declan… you read my journal?”I did not deny it. “How could you do that? You’re invading my privacy!” I finally looked at her as I said coldly, “If I hadn’t looked at your journal, how would I know that not only is my wife living with another man behind my back, but that she also had a child with him?”After I said that, everyone in the ambulance became quiet. Mr. Ford snorted coldly. “Luna, what exactly is going on?“We may be researchers, but how we conduct ours

However, she was rotten to the core. Luna avoided my gaze and reached out to grab my arm. “Don’t you want an explanation? Follow me, let’s go home now. I’ll explain it all to you.”The moment she leaned in, I smelt cologne on her. I was nauseated, and I almost threw up. I flung her hand away forcefully. “Don’t touch me, I’m disgusted by you!” Luna’s face became pale. Her lips were trembling. “Declan, what are you talking about?“I told you that I’ll explain it to you after we go home. What else do you want from…”Before she finished speaking. Mr. Ford walked out from the research center. He saw me standing next to Luna, so he was very pleased. “Declan, you’re a good man. I only dropped you a single hint, and you immediately came back to the country to visit Luna. “It’s no wonder Luna asked for a two-week long holiday. It turns out that you’ll be spending some time together.“You haven’t seen each other in so long! What are you standing here for? You should go ho
