Chapter 2

Author: Eggs Tomato
At the sight before me, I froze.

Tilly was already five years old.

In my memory, Adrian had never once held her.

Not long after Tilly was born, she had a high fever and cried nonstop. The doctor said a father's embrace might help calm the baby down.

At that point, Tilly had been crying for three days without sleeping.

Even then, Adrian had only sat off to the side, head lowered, playing on his phone. He had said just one thing.

"I don't like children."

Looking now at the love all over his face, I finally understood.

It wasn't that he didn't like children.

He just didn't like my child.

A scolding voice not far away snapped me back to my senses. I turned to my side and realized my daughter was gone.

I looked up instinctively.

Tilly was standing in front of Adrian, looking up at him and calling him Daddy again and again, her little face full of hope.

"Daddy, look. I made this for you myself."

But the next second, Adrian stared blankly at the little girl in front of him and flung away the red braided cord in her hand.

"What kind of new scam is this?

"I only have one child. I don't know you."

After he spoke, Adrian impatiently shook off Tilly's hand when she tried to come closer again. Holding the baby, he turned to leave.

I rushed forward, pulled Tilly into my arms, and stepped in front of him.

"Adrian, what is this supposed to mean?"

Perhaps he hadn't expected to see me there, or perhaps he hadn't expected me to return without telling him.

For a moment, the man stood frozen. His eyes were filled with disbelief.

After a long pause, Adrian tightened his hold on the baby and spoke softly, a rare trace of guilt in his voice.

"You... why are you back?"

Then, as if realizing something, he suddenly looked at Tilly, who was wiping away tears beside me.

"Is she Tilly?"

My lips twisted. My eyes dimmed, and the bitter smile never reached them.

Tilly was already five.

And he still couldn't recognize his own daughter.

"Adrian, don't you owe me an explanation?"

"You..."

Before I could finish, several cars stopped in front of the restaurant, and a group of people got out.

When I saw the woman leading them, I froze. My eyes filled with pain.

"Long time no see, sis."

It was Willa Liddell.

My half sister.

Back then, she and her mother had destroyed the happy family I once had, driven my mother to her death, and sent me to a psychiatric hospital.

When I met Willa's provocative eyes, memories flashed before me one after another, and my body couldn't stop trembling.

"Why are you all standing outside? It's cold."

Willa naturally took Adrian's hand, her tone intimate.

Before I could speak, Willa beat me to it. She spoke loudly enough for everyone around us to hear.

"Maya, Adrian told me everything.

"You insisted on being with him. You were even willing to become the other woman. But now Adrian and I have a baby. Stop pestering him.

"Adrian and I are married. Are you still going to be like your mother was back then, a stumbling block in someone else's happiness?"

In an instant, everyone around us turned to look at me. They whispered among themselves, their words full of insults and contempt.

"Adrian and I need to talk. Step out for a while."Willa opened her mouth, but before she could say anything, Adrian spoke first."Willa, Maya likes nuts. We're out. Go buy some."As he said that, Adrian's gaze stayed on me the entire time.Willa froze. The next second, she grabbed her coat and walked out.For a while, only Adrian and I were left in the villa.Adrian stepped forward, reaching out like he had countless times before, wanting to pull me into his arms."Honey..."The smell of women's perfume coming off him made me sick for no reason. I instinctively pushed him away and backed up several steps.Only after I was sure I had kept a safe distance did I speak softly."The decor in this villa looks familiar. Do you remember? That year, in our rental apartment, you and I talked about the big villa we'd live in one day. We designed it together."I didn't expect you to actually remember."I laughed quietly to myself."Seven years ago, you quit your job and prepared to s

The moment I finished speaking, the rain came pouring down.Adrian stood in the storm, suddenly seized by a terrible panic. The night he learned Maya was pregnant had been a stormy night too.But at that time, Maya was far overseas, and the company was going through a massive upheaval. I hadn't expected my trust to be trampled by him so casually, or turned into a weapon he and someone else would use to frame me.I opened my mouth to speak, but the phone in my pocket rang the next second. It was my friend. She said Tilly was missing.I couldn't care about anything else. I got up and rushed out, but Adrian stepped forward and grabbed me from behind."Maya, you owe Willa an apology.""Adrian, your child is missing!"I roared at the man in front of me with bloodshot eyes. The next second, panic flashed across Adrian's face."Dylan? What happened to Dylan?"Willa stood up, took his hand, and comforted him softly."Dylan's fine. The nanny just told me he's asleep at home."Adrian immediately let out a breath, and his whole expression relaxed.Watching the man's attitude change so dramatically, I clenched my fists hard and ran outside, leaving only one sentence behind."Adrian, you don't deserve to be a father!"The moment I ran out of the company, I saw Tilly

After hanging up, I stared blankly at the messages constantly popping up on my phone. They were all from Adrian. The first was an address."I'm busy lately. You and Tilly should go back to the rental for now.""Starting tomorrow, bring three meals a day to the office. I'm still used to eating your cooking.""Also, the day after tomorrow is Willa's birthday. As her sister, remember to prepare a gift for her."The instant I saw those messages, a nameless fury surged up inside me and rushed straight to my head.Even now, Adrian hadn't offered me the slightest explanation. He only continued ordering me around like always. He had even forgotten that today was Tilly's birthday. With trembling fingers, I typed slowly."Adrian, do you remember what day today is?"There was no response.Perhaps I was too exhausted. In a daze, I fell asleep like that.Early the next morning, when I woke groggily, Tilly was sitting on the bed holding my phone, smiling excitedly at me."Mommy, Daddy
