Chapter 1

Author: His Shadow
Ten days after my miscarriage, I met Clayton Lockwood in the hospital corridor.

He was carefully helping Ruby Sanders walk. He was looking at her with a gentle gaze.

Clayton frowned when he saw me.

“What are you doing here? Didn’t I already transfer you some money to compensate for your emotional distress?

“Isn’t it enough?”

I shook my head.

This time, being even more generous, he transferred five million dollars into my account.

I never dreamed that my less-than-a-year-old marriage could be worth so much money.

Five million dollars.

That was what my child’s life was worth.

Ruby held Clayton’s hand and looked at me apologetically.

“Hazel, please don’t take it the wrong way. Clayton just gets overly protective of me and doesn’t always think before he speaks.”

She then looked at my stomach.

“I heard you were hospitalized, too. Is the baby alright?”

Before I could answer, Clayton hurriedly comforted her.

“It’s probably just a minor pregnancy scare. I’m sure everything’s fine.

“Don’t worry yourself over it. Just focus on getting better, okay?”

I instinctively touched my lower abdomen as my heart ached.

Yeah, everything was fine.

It was merely a miscarriage.

It was not as important as Ruby, anyway.

Otherwise, why would Clayton not stop by to check on me even though he knew I was hospitalized in the same facility?

Had he simply asked one more question, he would have learned that our child was already gone.

As I forced back my tears, I took the printed divorce agreement from my bag and handed it to him.

“Clayton, I want to set up an insurance policy for our baby. Could you sign this for me?”

His indifferent expression softened when I mentioned the child. He readily took the document and signed it

As he signed it, he asked casually, “Why are you using this bag today? Didn’t you like the limited-edition bag I got you last time?”

I smiled and said, “I do. I like it very much.”

Ever since Ruby was diagnosed with depression, Clayton would suddenly disappear every few days to be with her.

He said, “Ruby has always been very sensitive, even as a kid. Now that she’s sick, what if something happens when I’m not with her?

“Don’t worry. I just don’t want her to do anything foolish. It’s nothing more than that.”

He promised me he would go off to accompany Ruby only ninety-nine times.

After the ninety-ninth time, he would fully commit to me.

Ever since then, every time he left to see Ruby, he would have his assistant buy me a limited-edition bag as compensation.

It was one of the most expensive brands, and it was my favorite.

Ten days ago, I received the ninety-ninth bag.

I eagerly searched for him, hoping he would come home with me.

That was when I saw Clayton holding Ruby tightly in his arms.

I was stunned, and my heart shattered into pieces.

“What’s going on here?”

I stepped forward with tears welling up in my eyes. I demanded an answer.

Clayton panicked and released Ruby instantly.

“Hazel, don’t misunderstand. It’s not what you think.”

He still wanted to find me and start over properly. He wanted to atone for how badly he had treated me.However, I had told him that I never wanted to see him again. In the past, he thought Ruby’s suicide threats were the most heartbreaking thing he could experience. He finally understood what the most heart-wrenching thing truly was.It was my leaving him. However, it was all too late. The police chief, James, was his former classmate. When James heard why he was at the police station, he quickly explained the situation.Initially, although the hospital had reported the incident, the nurse was not gravely injured. The issue was therefore handled primarily through mediation. The intention was for Ruby to simply apologize and let it go.No one expected Ruby to inexplicably lose her mind. She refused to back down and caused a major disturbance at the hospital. That was why she had been detained overnight.Clayton massaged the muscle between his eyebrows as he tried to suppres

The housekeeper wiped her tears before continuing, “You said it was just a pregnancy, so why all the fuss?“Sir, you are truly heartless.”Clayton was utterly desolate. He muttered to himself, “But I-I bought her bags, didn’t I?”...The first time Ruby had an episode was late at night.I was worried and adamantly refused to let him leave.Anxious, Clayton took out his phone and told me to pick any bag I liked.“Hazel, I promise, I’ll only accompany Ruby ninety-nine times. From now on, every time I go, I’ll get you a bag. When you have ninety-nine receipts, bring them to me. I’ll come home with you.”From then on, the walk-in closet became my most treasured possession.Countless times, his assistant told him how happily I smiled whenever I received a bag.Little did he know, I was not happy because I got the bags.I was happy because with each receipt, I inched closer to the end of his hollow promise. The housekeeper let out a bitter, incredulous laugh. She pointed at the r

A wave of pain hit Clayton so hard that he stumbled back.‘It was because of me... my baby…’ he thought. His gaze fell upon the rosary. A sudden realization struck him. He charged out of the room like a madman. He needed to go home. Hazel! At that moment, he could no longer care about Ruby. All he could think of doing at the moment was go home, apologize to me, and atone for what he had done.Panic washed over Ruby. It felt as if something had slipped from her control. She hurried to chase after Clayton but was stopped by Ms. Charis.“You’re not going anywhere.”...Ruby’s expression instantly darkened when Ms. Charis blocked her way.“Why not? This is a hospital. Are you trying to illegally detain me now?”Ms. Charis gave a wry smile.“You really are good at making wild accusations. You injured someone, and you think you can just walk away without offering an apology or compensation?“Just so you know, I’ve already called the police. You’ll wait here for them.”Whe

The other people around them had also calmed down by then. They turned and looked at her mockingly.Clayton did not notice that. He only grew stern and said, “What’s wrong with you people? Aren’t you medical staff who have sworn to save lives? How can you lack basic compassion?”Ms. Charis rolled her eyes. “Yes, we’re medical staff. What of it? We’re human beings too. Did she show any compassion when she slashed Lily?“That’s enough. Just apologize. A hospital is not a place for your nonsense.”The others also began to speak up.“That’s right. Just apologize to Lily.”“If you don’t, we’re calling the police.”“This is unbelievable.”Unable to bear the criticism, Ruby angrily rushed up to Ms. Charis.“You people!”“What’s that stuck on your clothes?” Clayton suddenly said. His gaze fixed intently on the rosary that was caught on Ruby’s clothes....Ruby immediately stepped back and tried to hide the rosary. The rosary had snagged on her hospital gown.“I-It’s nothing.”

As she was being provoked by the nurse, Ruby totally lost her composure. She frantically grabbed the fruit knife from the floor and hurled it at the nurse.Clayton, who had just snapped back to reality, saw what she intended to do and immediately shouted.“Stop!”...However, it was already too late. The knife lodged into the corner of the nurse’s eye. Blood started gushing out.“Ahhh!”The nurse screamed when she felt the bloody gash. She pushed the door open and called for help.“Somebody, help! Someone attacked me!”Several doctors and nurses from nearby rushed in. They gasped at the sight of the nurse’s face, which was covered in blood. The wound itself was not large, but it was less than an inch from her eye.“Lily, what happened?”The head nurse questioned her worriedly as she carefully dabbed the wound with a disinfectant swab.Lily had only passed the exams and joined the hospital team this year. She was just in her twenties and still unmarried. Her face was mar

The fruit knife clattered to the floor with a sharp clang. The apple peels lay scattered everywhere, but no one paid any attention to them.Clayton shot to his feet. He was in utter disbelief.“What... did you say?”The nurse was startled by his reaction and looked at him strangely.“Are you Ms. Bronwyn’s family member?“She was hospitalized for a miscarriage a few days ago. She forgot her medication.“I just saw her leave this room, so I came to ask.“Which of you is a member of her family?”Clayton’s mouth opened, then closed. His face instantly paled.“I-I’m her husband.”Hearing this, the nurse’s formerly polite demeanor changed immediately. She looked Clayton up and down with a scornful gaze.“So, you’re Ms. Bronwyn’s irresponsible husband.“Your wife was hospitalized after losing the baby, and you didn’t visit once. That’s pretty low.”Clayton’s eyes flickered in shock. He stuttered, “I-I didn’t know... she had a miscarriage.”The nurse snorted, “You didn’t know?
