Chapter 5

Author: Jean Shea
It was already close to noon when Sheryl returned to the art gallery. She didn't even have time for lunch. She went straight into her office and immediately started browsing Starrism International's website.

The pen's registered owner was a social influencer named Selena Shaw.

Over three months ago, she had been found dead in her home after being stabbed in the abdomen. The case had made headlines everywhere, and two months ago, the police had arrested the murderer.

It was Selena's boyfriend, Vincent Holden.

Vincent was a well-known playboy in Nexville. Rather than calling what they had a relationship, it would be more accurate to say Selena was his kept woman.

The case had solid evidence. After he was caught, the case had quickly been wrapped up and was transferred to the prosecutor's office and the court.

Steven Peterson was now serving as his defense attorney.

The preliminary hearing for this case was taking place in a week's time. Steven needed this piece of evidence to prove Vincent's innocence, and there was very likely a third person present at the crime scene.

Sheryl had just gotten up. She was about to head out when her phone chimed with a text notification.

"Steven is at Nexville Men's Prison right now. There's no need to rush. Head to Peterson & Co. at 4 PM."

The anxious, unsettled feeling she'd been carrying around somehow dissipated after reading the message. Sheryl stared at the words. Her thoughts drifted. Whoever had sent the message not only knew everything, but they could seemingly predict the future.

It was kind of unbelievable.

-

At 4 o'clock, after giving Jonah a few instructions for work, she grabbed her bag and car keys and left the gallery, driving once again to Peterson & Co.

The same receptionist from that morning greeted her.

Recognizing her, the receptionist assumed Sheryl had made her decision. Smiling, she said, "Hello, we have a lot of other excellent attorneys at our firm."

Sheryl smiled politely. "Thank you, but I'd still like to speak with Mr. Peterson. Is he here now?"

The receptionist looked troubled. "Mr. Peterson is out on a case. His schedule's really packed. I'm afraid there's nothing we can-" She paused mid-sentence, her gaze shifting toward the entrance. She called out, "Mr. Peterson."

Sheryl instinctively followed her line of sight.

A tall figure entered her view. His frame was lean and well-proportioned, with broad shoulders and a slim waist beneath his blue suit. His facial features were well-defined, with almond-shaped eyes and a strong nose gave him a charming disposition.

He looked like a knight in shining armor.

He was elegant and aloof, yet completely untouchable. He looked even more handsome in person than in his photos online. However, he also seemed like he wasn't to be messed with.

Even just walking toward her, he exuded an aura that made her instinctively want to run away.

Steven nodded a little. His cold, clear gaze swept over her face with barely a pause before he looked away and continued walking.

Sheryl snapped out of her daze and quickly called, "Mr. Peterson."

Steven paused and turned back to look at her. His expression was unreadable.

The receptionist opened her mouth to explain, but Sheryl had already stepped forward. She stopped two feet away from him.

Her eyes were bright and clear as she looked at him. Her lips parted slightly. "I have something I'd like to show you. It's related to Selena."

Her voice wasn't loud, but it was enough for him to hear.

Steven's gaze locked onto her instantly. There was a flash of alertness in his eyes. His voice dropped to a deep, chilly tone. "Who are you to her?"

Sheryl answered honestly, "I didn't know her. I just came across this by chance. I thought it might help you."

Steven stared at her striking, assertive expression. He assessed her words. After a few seconds of silence, he seemed to realize this wasn't the place to talk.

"Come with me," he said flatly.

Sheryl smiled and gave the receptionist a polite nod of thanks before following Steven into the elevator.

The firm had five floors. Steven's office was clearly on the top floor.

Outside his office door, she saw a nameplate that read 'Steven Peterson', with 'Managing Partner's Office' written below.

When they walked in, Steven simply said, "Have a seat."

The office was spacious and bright. The cold color scheme made it seem grand yet orderly and professional.

Sheryl didn't bother to look around. She took her seat. Moments later, an assistant came in and served coffee. She took a sip. The rich fragrance filled her mouth.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Steven casually unfasten his coat. His long fingers rested on his leg as he took a seat to her right.

He looked at her directly. His voice was deep and steady. "How should I address you?"

"Sheryl with an 'S', and the last name's Moran."

She introduced herself and set down the cup. She didn't beat around the bush. She took the pen out of her bag.

"This is Starrism's Valentine's Day limited edition pen, released this year. I bought it from a pawn shop this morning."

Steven's gaze swept over the pen. His expression was unreadable. He didn't say anything and waited for her to continue.

"I checked it on Starrism International's website. It shows that the registered owner is Selena, and the purchase date was February the fourteenth, on Valentine's Day.

"The pawnbroker told me he received it about two weeks ago. There wasn't any signed acquisition contract."

After hearing that, Steven's eyes flickered. It was as if something clicked in his mind. He frowned slightly and picked up a tissue before taking the pen to examine closely. After a moment, he looked at the calm woman in front of him.

His voice grew colder. "Since this is evidence related to a homicide, why didn't you go to the police, Miss Moran?"

"The case has already been closed and passed to the courts," Sheryl replied with a smile. "And of course, let's just say this is a stepping stone. I have a divorce case I'd like you to take on."

Steven ran his fingers along the pen as his gaze shifted from it to her face.

Their eyes met. The large office fell into a silence so thick you could have heard a pin drop.

Sheryl didn't flinch. She quietly met his gaze.

After a moment of consideration, Steven set the pen down. "Why do you want a divorce?"

"He cheated."

Steven didn't react. He changed his sitting position. The earlier sternness in his demeanor was now gone. Leaning back into the chair, he crossed one leg over the other. "Any kids?"

"No."

Over the past two years, Elaine had subtly suggested several times that they should hurry up and have a child. It didn't matter if they had a boy or a girl.

Brandon's older brothers both had kids, but they avoided Elaine as much as possible. That only made her more desperate for a grandchild of her own.

Sheryl hadn't been in a rush. After her mother passed away in a car accident last year, she had taken over the Moran Art Gallery. She simply didn't have the energy to start a family.

Looking back now, it was actually a good thing they hadn't had kids. Otherwise, the ones who'd suffer through the divorce the most would've been the children.

"How long have you been married?"

"Three years."

"How's your relationship been, overall?" Steven asked. "Was your sex life good?"

Sheryl was stunned. She blinked in confusion. "W-What?"Steven knew she had heard him clearly and didn't repeat himself. Instead, he continued to press, "How many times a week?"Sheryl considered herself a straightforward person, but talking about such a personal subject with a stranger made her feel incredibly awkward. Especially since this man was handsome and wore an expression of indifference. He didn't even blink."Does this have anything to do with my consultation for divorce?""Yes," Steven replied. "It has to do with how determined you are to divorce. Did you come here impulsively?"He had handled many divorce cases that stemmed from infidelity. Most wives, upon discovering their husbands' betrayal, were too shocked to handle it and came to consult a lawyer. But in the end, after various efforts by the husbands to win them back, they chose to forgive and give their husbands another chance. He didn't like wasting time or doing unnecessary work.Sheryl considered herself

Sheryl clutched her phone as she stood by the wall and listened to Brandon pour sweet words to Vivian over the phone. Every second of it felt like torture to her.She realized she didn't have it in her to listen any longer. Instead, she cowardly chose to turn off the recording and walk away.Brandon didn't take long to return. He entered the dining room and saw her with her head down while she wiped her eyes. He quickly approached her. "What happened?""Got some oil in my eyes. I can't open them."Brandon frowned and pulled out a chair beside her. He sat down and quickly held her chin. He then grabbed her restless hand. "Let me see. Don't rub them."Even with her eyes closed, the redness and swelling were obvious."Are you stupid? What if you hurt your eyes?" Brandon scolded her gently. He sounded a little concerned. He wiped away her tears with his thumb. "Come on, let's wash it off."Sheryl's lips moved but no sound came out.Her eyes were closed, so she couldn't see his expr

When Brandon came out, Sheryl was already lying down with her eyes closed. He saw her swollen eyelids. After gently touching her cheek with a pained look, he turned off the lights and slipped under the covers. As he pulled her into his arms, he couldn't help but whisper in her ear, "Baby, I love you. Good night."Sheryl wasn't asleep. Every word was painful to hear. If he loved her, why would he cheat? His love felt cheap. She turned over naturally, or at least pretended to, and faced away from him. Silent tears rolled down her cheeks and soaked into the pillow. It was another sleepless night. She didn't know how long she cried for, or when she eventually fell asleep. The night was restless. One dream after another invaded her sleep.By the time she woke, it was already one in the afternoon. Her head throbbed a little, and her entire body felt heavy. She threw off the covers, got ready, and headed downstairs. Melinda greeted her with a smile."Mrs. Simrod, you're up. Mr. Simro

Vivian forced a seemingly surprised smile and quickly came up with an excuse. "I just brought my bag over for some maintenance. Figured I'd shop around a little too."She was carrying a pink Chanel bag. The starting price was probably around eighty thousand dollars.Sheryl recognized the bag. She'd seen it on Vivian's Instagram before. It was one of the many bags Brandon had gifted her.Raising an eyebrow, Sheryl asked, "That bag really suits you. When did you get it? I've got the same one, except mine's in white."That one had been a gift from Brandon too. He brought it back from a business trip in Fedoria. Sheryl's post had gone up a day before Vivian's."My boyfriend gave it to me," Vivian replied, clutching the bag's chain tighter as she quickly changed the subject. "What about you two? What are you doing here?""My mother-in-law's birthday is coming up. Thought I'd come pick out a gift for her," Sheryl answered with a smile. "Just so happened to run into him picking up a bag

Sheryl's heart sank. It was true. Those extra business trips of his were actually time spent with Vivian.Having her suspicions confirmed hurt far more than she expected. Her phone screen turned dim. Her eyes drifted to the window, and she watched as the bright neon lights and towering buildings swept past. Reflections flickered in her gaze. The brightness and warmth she once felt had completely vanished, leaving behind only a faint shimmer of tears.-The next morning, she went to the bank. She sorted out her personal assets, along with the joint funds and mutual investments shared under their names. That afternoon, she returned to the art gallery. Around two, she got a call from Brandon."Sheryl, I need to head over to Everton this afternoon."Everton was about a five-hour drive from Nexville.Brightwell Constructions, which Brandon ran, had a subsidiary there. Two of their key partners—one in steel and another in textiles—were also located there. He used to travel there oc

From the corner of her eyes, Sheryl caught a glimpse of Brandon in the distance. Her heart skipped a beat. The evidence wasn't fully in her hands yet. This wasn't the best time to confront him. She didn't even have a second to come up with a strategy. Acting on instinct, she grabbed the man in front of her by the collar and yanked him into the corner beside the wall. She pressed a finger to her lips."Shh."Steven, who found himself suddenly shoved against the wall, looked stunned. The surprise in his eyes lingered for quite a while.Sheryl's heart was pounding so hard it felt like it might burst out of her chest. She didn't even realize how inappropriate her actions were. Not far away, Brandon slowly turned around. The long, grand corridor was nearly empty, with only two guests and a waiter walking by. His expression eased ever so slightly."What is it?" Vivian asked, puzzled."Nothing."Brandon frowned a little. He could've sworn he just heard someone call Sheryl's name. Was

After taking a few bites, Sheryl's phone suddenly chimed with a text notification."Danger! Steven must not drink that wine! Mason drugged it. He's trying to ruin Steven's reputation!"Sheryl froze for a second. Without a moment of hesitation or even a sliver of doubt, she sprang up, ready to rush upstairs, only to abruptly stop in her tracks. She suddenly remembered that Brandon and Vivian's private room was at the far end, just to the right. If she went up now, she might run into them. Worse, she might not make it in time to stop anything.Just then, she recalled the business card Steven had given her before. She hurriedly fished it out of her bag and dialed the number.-At that exact moment, Mason Jenkins had just walked up to Steven with a wine bottle. He poured Steven a glass."There were some misunderstandings between us during Leo Yates' case," he said with a smile. "This one's on me. I hope you can let bygones be bygones."The dinner tonight had been arranged by a few

Steven's cold gaze landed on Sheryl's face. When he spoke, his voice was deep but sounded indifferent. "What's the matter?""I've collected some evidence recently, but I haven't organized it yet. I'm afraid something might go wrong. Can I send it to you and have you keep it for me?"The evidence she currently had wasn't much. There were only some photos, screenshots, and recordings. Unfortunately, she didn't even have the courage to open and look at them. She was also worried that one day, Brandon might suddenly check her phone or computer, and she just didn't feel secure. It seemed safer to keep all this with a lawyer for now."How's the property part coming along?" Steven asked casually."I've already figured out the marital assets. I'll take some time to write up a list and send it to you."Steven nodded. "His personal assets can be investigated during the lawsuit by applying to the court for a financial review and asset preservation. But it's good for you to have an idea abo

Vivian had posted a new update that evening."My husband gave me this month's allowance. What should I buy?"It was followed by a thinking face and a heart emoji.Below that was a screenshot of a bank transfer and a chat conversation. It was a hundred thousand dollars. The sender's name and account number were blurred out, but the timestamp was clearly visible. It went through at six minutes to eight that night.Vivian hadn't blurred the WhatsApp profile photo, contact name, or chat log."I miss you so much," Vivian wrote."I miss you too, baby," Brandon replied."If you miss me, why don't you come see me? Hmph!" There was an angry face emoji at the end.Brandon had replied with a voice message."You'd better not lie to me. I bought coffee for my coworkers this afternoon saying you did it. Sheryl clenched her fists tightly. Brandon really had given Vivian quite a lot of things."Boyfriend? Vivian, when did that happen? Congratulations!"The nearby colleagues gasped in surprise. They smiled and offered their congratulations.Vivian replied with a shy smile, "Thank you! This afternoon I'll have him treat everyone to coffee."The coworkers politely declined. "Oh, that's too much, we can't accept that.""It's fine," Vivian said generously. "It's just coffee."Back in college, Sheryl had already noticed that Vivian was great at winning people over. There were always one or two folks gathered around her. That sweet, innocent, and kind act of hers was the perfect disguise. Now that she thought about it, Elaine was the exact same type.It turned out that Vivian was the one who would've made the perfect daughter-in-law for Elaine."Sheryl, what do you want for afternoon tea?" Once the waiter left, silence fell between them. They seemed to have nothing to talk about.Sheryl realized that Steven only got talkative when it came to legal matters. Otherwise, he was a man of few words. He didn't find the silence awkward at all.Sheryl felt a little uneasy. She thought of the stack of documents on his desk earlier, all related to Vincent's case, and took the initiative to ask, "How's the investigation on Vincent's case going? Did they catch the guy who pawned the pen?""They did." Steven paused for a second. "He was caught red-handed by Selena when she came out of the shower. She resisted, and he accidentally killed her.""Why was Vincent at Selena's place that night?"Steven lifted his gaze and gave her a long look. "Those are case details. Not something I should disclose."Sheryl got the hint and took a tactical sip of water. "Right. Shouldn't have asked."The truth was that he could tell her. That night, Vincent had arranged via WhatsApp to hook up wit

Sheryl originally thought the conversation outside would last no more than thirty minutes. But to her surprise, an hour and a half passed, and Margaret Holden was still going on and on.There wasn't a chair or sofa in the room, and she didn't feel comfortable sitting on the bed, so her legs had gone a bit numb. After another ten minutes, the hidden door finally slid open. Sheryl paused mid-leg-stretch and stared blankly at the man outside. After a few seconds, she quickly straightened up and gave him an awkward smile. "Has Mrs. Holden left?"Steven glanced at the perfectly untouched bed. His lips moved slightly. "Just left. Come on out.""Oh, okay."As Sheryl lifted her leg to move, she stumbled slightly. Steven instinctively reached out and caught her arm.Feeling embarrassed, she quickly pulled her arm away. "My legs are a little numb. Steven glanced at her trembling hand without making it obvious. "Yes." He set down his coffee cup and added, "But the tax bureau will evaluate based on the severity of the case. "You weren't the one who evaded the taxes, you weren't aware of the situation, and you're the one making the report. Under those conditions, you could be exempt from punishment."Sheryl finally began to relax a little after hearing his calm voice."Is Veloura Atelier evading taxes?" he asked.Sheryl pursed her lips and clutched her phone more tightly. "I'm not sure. I just suddenly thought of it and wanted to ask."Steven gave a nonchalant grunt. "If that's the case, I'd suggest going to the tax bureau and looking into it. Use yourself as bait and catch them off guard. That's when they'll slip up."It was a clever tactic. It wouldn't affect her much personally. Maybe she really would find something or even dig up some key evidence.Once her pounding heart finally settled, she was ready to get up.Her p

Thinking back now, it really was stupid of her. She smiled at herself mockingly."Was there a written IOU for that three million?"Sheryl opened her mouth but shook her head. A trace of helplessness clouded her eyes.If she couldn't prove that the three million was a loan to Elaine, then as the investor and legal representative, she would definitely be implicated."Did you ever participate in any business decisions? Board meetings? Sign any establishment documents for the beauty salon?" Steven asked.Sheryl shook her head. "No. Choosing the location, renovation, purchasing all the equipment, hiring, and even the business planning model, I wasn't involved in any of it. All I did was give her the initial three million, and in return she made me the legal representative and gave me a profit share every six months.""How many times have you received them?""Only once so far," Sheryl replied. "The next payout is due next month. I only found out yesterday from her that the next payout

He will help you."Sheryl stared at the text. Her gaze intensified.Who was sending these? Before this, she and Steven were strangers. Even now, their relationship was still not close. How could this person be so sure Steven would help her?Was it just because he was a lawyer? She couldn't come up with an answer. Sheryl didn't sleep well. She kept waking up throughout the night.By the time she opened her eyes again around seven, she felt no trace of drowsiness. She tossed back the covers and got up to wash and change. When she came downstairs, Brandon was sitting at the dining table and typing on his phone. His expression was focused and serious. She could see him smiling a little. The scene felt oddly familiar to Sheryl. She had a sense of déjà vu.It looked just like when they had been dating and sending each other affectionate texts. They'd gone through a long phase like that. Now, she was watching him do the same thing with another woman. It still hurt, but strangely, it didn't hurt as much as it used to."Good morning, Mrs. Simrod." Simon nodded and stood up with Elaine. Still holding her hand, he spoke just in time. "When it comes to children, it's all about fate. In the Simrod family, there's no rule that says a woman has to have a child within the first year or two of marriage."Alright. Since everyone's here, let's eat," he added. That line was a direct slap in Gloria's face.Gloria let out a cold chuckle. "All I did was casually ask Sheryl about having a baby, and look at you, jumping to defend her as if your life's at stake. Whatever Elaine says is always right, isn't it?"Simon's expression turned grim, but Gloria wasn't planning to stick around to see his reaction. She stood up gracefully, smoothed the side of her hair, and said breezily, "I'm not feeling well. I'll skip dinner. Wouldn't want to ruin your mood either."With that, she turned around and walked out.If not for the deep entanglement of interests between their two families, she would have divorced him long ago.
