Chapter 3

Author: July
We all followed behind Tracy and headed into the conference room.

The moment we stepped inside, Colin started yelling at us without warning. He laid into everyone with a harsh scolding, and we were all left blinking at each other, completely confused.

From what we could gather, an out-of-town order had fallen through. Apparently, someone in the company had messed up, and it cost us the deal.

It had something to do with our reputation. Word was, someone had too much to drink and started running their mouth, saying all kinds of nonsense about the company.

The client ended up thinking that the company was a total mess.

In the end, they backed out. The contract we were supposed to sign next week was cancelled.

We were all exchanging looks, each of us wondering who the idiot was.

After Colin finally cooled off, he got down to business. The meeting turned to what we were going to do about it, and eventually, Colin said he'd handle the negotiations himself next week.

The meeting lasted around half an hour. Afterward, one of my coworkers grumbled as he walked over, eyebrows knit. "Seriously, dragging us in on the weekend for this?"

I replied, "Right? Wasn't Mrs. Booth the one who called the meeting? How'd it end up being Mr. Booth instead?"

My coworker shrugged. "Who knows with those two. Whatever's going on between them, salarymen like us aren't meant to understand."

As the meeting ended and I headed downstairs, I ran into Tracy, who was holding her bag.

"Honey? Honey, wait up!" she called.

I paused by the stairwell. "Weren't you lounging at home? What are you doing here all of a sudden?"

She was fully made-up—foundation, lipstick, the works. Stunning as always.

Judging by how long it usually took her to get ready, she must've spent at least half an hour putting herself together.

She said, "Oh, right after you left, Mr. Booth called me and told me to come to the meeting too."

I raised an eyebrow. "Well, you got ready fast."

She laughed. "Women can be quick when they want to be. It's the men who shouldn't be fast."

I couldn't help but chuckle. I caught the dirty joke right away.

On the bus ride home, I asked, "Nothing going on today?"

She shook her head. "Nope. It's the weekend; what could I have going on?"

But what I really meant was, why was she heading home with me this early? Shouldn't she be off somewhere with Colin on weekends?

I asked, "Is Mrs. Booth staying home?"

She frowned a little. "No idea. Why do you keep bringing them up?"

I scratched my head, not sure how to reply.

The bus was packed. What was I supposed to do? Ask her outright why she wasn't off cuddling up with Colin, or whether his wife was home so they couldn't sneak around?

I kept my mouth shut and dropped the subject.

The next few days passed quietly, just like always. Tracy stayed close, sticking to me like glue. Honestly, it was starting to feel like… like she really was my wife.

Then came another weekend morning. I woke up feeling something heavy on my chest. I didn't even have to look—I already knew Tracy had snuck into my room again while I was sleeping.

I pulled the covers back, looked down, and there she was, fast asleep. She was wearing a thin tank top, her pale, smooth skin glowing in the morning light. Her curves were impossible to ignore.

I mean, I was a normal man. With her throwing herself at me like this, I'd probably need to get checked out if I didn't do something about it.

While she slept, I leaned in and kissed her. She slowly opened her eyes but didn't pull away.

I wrapped my arms around her. She moved closer, resting her face on my chest.

In that moment, my whole body felt like it was on fire. I was excited—who wouldn't be? But more than that, I was confused.

Just a few days ago, she wouldn't even let me into her room. Now she was all over me like this?

I rolled on top of her, ready to take the next step, but she suddenly gasped and pushed at me. "No—don't!"

"Huh?" My pants were already halfway off. Was she being serious?

"Anything but that," she begged. "Please."

She was trembling, her body curled up. She looked terrified.

I asked, "Why not? Is it that time of the month?"

She shook her head.

Judging by the look on her face, I knew it wasn't happening. Not today.

With a sigh, I turned over.

She snuggled up behind me, wrapping her arms around my waist. I picked up my phone to check my messages.

There was a missed call and a text—both from Tracy.

The timestamp said it was sent just after midnight.

I opened the message, and what I read hit me like a punch to the chest.

[Honey, Mr. Booth asked me to go on a business trip with him to Joselton. I'll probably be gone for three or four days. Take care of yourself, okay? Don't skip breakfast. Love, Tracy]

Tracy had left for a trip last night?

Then who the hell was the woman lying behind me right now?

  • Love, Lies, and Spies   Chapter 11

It was all just part of an act.I was nothing more than a pawn in this elaborate game.Rachel had discovered Colin's affairs a long time ago. Even before that, he'd been embezzling money from the company to spend on mistresses. Rachel had put up with it.But then, Colin went a step further. He even hired a voodoo master to put a curse on Rachel, hoping she would die sooner so he could inherit the family fortune. That was the last straw for Rachel. So, from the moment Tracy walked into the company, everything had been part of Rachel's plan. And later, as they lured Colin into signing that contract, I became a piece in the puzzle.Everything that had happened at home had been a setup.Colin had installed security cameras at my place, so the sisters had been putting up a show for him, trying to make it look like there was some voodoo stuff going on. I had fallen for it too, since I had personally experienced all those things."So, that day in the CEO's office, that was all a

So, Tracy was the one who had cast the curse? I scratched my head. "That's pretty crazy."I had heard of this kind of thing before. It was pretty strange, but I never imagined it could be used like this."Listen to me!" Tracie's voice was filled with urgency. She went on to explain that at first, the vines would quietly grow inside the body, unnoticed, until they reached a certain amount. Once they did, they would multiply at an alarming rate. That was when the victim would suddenly develop a high fever and, eventually, die if untreated.Even the most skilled doctors wouldn't be able to figure out what caused it. They'd just think the person died from an illness.A gray line in the eye meant the vines weren't yet fully grown inside, and there was still a chance for recovery. But if the line turned pitch black, there was no hope left.Colin's eyes… the line had already turned black!"You need to leave now! I never thought my sister would do something like this. I really didn't kn

The two Tracys locked eyes. The second one, holding a takeout box, was clearly startled. With a sharp gasp, she took two steps back, and the box fell with a loud thud. Were they twins? They looked exactly alike! So, it was the Tracy by the door who had signed the agreement with my boss?"I told you to stay home! Who told you to come here?" the Tracy on the bed scolded. The Tracy by the door pouted like a child caught in trouble, but she didn't speak. She shot me a glare. "Brady, I'm warning you: Don't you even think about making a move on my sister!"Oh, so they were twins! One was named Tracy, the other Tracie. The pronunciation was the same, but the spelling was different. After giving a simple explanation, they began to explain the accident. The authorities had already concluded that Rachel had been driving under the influence. She was in the emergency room now, in serious condition, and the alcohol test showed she'd had quite a bit to drink. After they managed to stabili

Suddenly, a bright light flashed in front of me. The car swerved instinctively, and then there was a sharp bang. We crashed.I felt dizzy, my head spinning. I could see someone by the roadside helping, but just before I closed my eyes, I swear I saw a familiar face.Tracy.When I woke up again, I was in a hospital bed.Aside from some scratches on my calf, everything else seemed fine.Sitting by my bedside in a black suit was someone I didn't expect. Tracy, her expression dark and cold, was glaring at me with eyes full of ice."Tracy—" I started to speak.Smack!A hard slap stung across my face."You jerk!" Tracy, usually so calm and quiet, exploded in rage. "How could you cheat on me?!"What the hell was going on with her? Before I could process anything, she snapped again, "How could you cheat on me?!"I was pissed now too. We were supposed to be a contract couple, free to see other people. I sure didn't say anything when she was fooling around with Colin! I raised my

The sudden sight scared me out of my wits. I rushed to find a mirror and pulled my bottom eyelid down to check my own eye.Thankfully, everything looked normal. But my coworker was not having it. He started cursing under his breath, clearly panicking, and shot up from his seat, ready to head straight to the hospital.Right then, my phone rang. It was a call from Tracy.I picked up, and her familiar voice came through the line. "Hey, Honey, where are you? It's the weekend and you're not home. Are you out with some other woman?"I said quickly, "Oh, I'm on my way back. Mrs. Booth called me into the office for some extra work."I hung up and hurried home. When I walked through the door, Tracy was in the living room wearing her pajamas, slicing up some fruit.Something clicked in my mind. I casually pulled out my phone and dialed a number. A second later, the ringtone echoed from inside the living room.Tracy paused, holding half a slice of apple, and looked at me."Sorry, wrong

Still, judging by the look on Rachel's face, she definitely wasn't joking.Without meaning to, I took a step back. Things were already way too complicated—I didn't want to make them worse.Rachel gave me a sweet, almost playful smile. "I know I'm forty now, but dressed like this, who'd actually guess? Go back ten years, and I could hold my own against that little vixen of yours, couldn't I?"I quickly nodded, trying to stay polite. "Yes, of course. You're a natural beauty.""Why are you just standing there? You can play dirty, but I can't?" she asked with a sharp gleam in her eyes."It's not that, Mrs. Booth. I've already done enough bad things—I can't keep doing this!""Why not?" Rachel clicked her heels, then her black silk stockings slipped free of her shoes. She curled a toe and gestured for me to come closer. This woman was determined to go all the way today. What the hell was I supposed to do now?Just as I was scrambling for a way out, Rachel seemed to lose patience. "Damn it! Damn it!!"I slammed my phone down and swore out loud. What the hell was going on here?!Was I dealing with twins? Why would they pretend to be the same person? This couldn't be some kind of split personality—no way. A person with a split personality couldn't appear in two places at the same time.Or… did I run into something supernatural? Could the Tracy who was supposedly away on business in Joselton be the real one, and the woman I was with last night… wasn't even human?Or maybe neither of them was human?Damn it.I didn't even bother to wash my face. I just threw on whatever clothes I could grab and went straight downstairs. The sun was shining, but I couldn't shake the frustration bubbling inside me.What now? The Tracy in Joselton was coming home tonight… Should I go back too?I found a coffee shop and sat there by myself all afternoon, stewing in my thoughts. Then, out of nowhere, an unfamiliar number lit up my phone screen."Hello, is this Brady?" A woman

  • Love, Lies, and Spies   Chapter 4

"Honey, why did you go quiet all of a sudden?" Tracy's voice came from behind me, soft but sudden."Oh, it's nothing. Just scrolling through my phone," I said quickly, exiting the chat and randomly opening a short video, pretending to be absorbed in it.But my mind kept going back to that creepy doll I saw in her room the other day—the cursed one. Just thinking about it made my whole body tense.Right now, I couldn't stop wondering: Was the woman behind me really human, or something else entirely?"Are you feeling sick? You're shaking a little," Tracy said quietly, resting her head gently against my back."I probably just need to hit the bathroom. Haven't gone since I woke up." I stood up quickly, slipped on a pair of house slippers, and headed for the bathroom. The human imagination really has no limits. Especially when it comes to weird, creepy stuff you can't explain. Your brain just runs wild with it.I lit a cigarette in the bathroom. The more I thought about it, the more w
