PENELOPE

Seraphina's perfume lingered in my apartment after she had gone.

I opened every window but it stayed in the air like her presence, stubborn and never really fading away.

In the kitchen, I made pancakes and tea. I moved around because staying still felt like waiting for trouble.

My daughter was awake in her bouncer, watching me with those dark, serious eyes that seemed to know too much. She made a sound, to remind me of her presence.

"I know," I said.

Then she kicked her feet in excite

PENELOPE Seraphina was just done talking when Jonathan's hand wrapped around my wrist just firm in a grip that said stop, don't walk away from this, I'm not letting this moment dissolve into nothing the way every other moment with us has dissolved.I didn't stop walking because he forced me to but because his grip was far different from the Jonathan Blackwood I used to know...His hand was shaking. He was looking at me the way I had never seen him look at anything whether it was a contract or a problem he was solving. He was looking at me like he was standing at the edge of something and had just realised how far the drop was."Answer me," he said. His voice came out in a way I had not recognized, maybe something has broken loose."Answer me, Penelope." his voice persisted."Let go of my wrist first," I said struggling with one arm while Nora was at the other. He released it immediately...Good thing I didn't trip Seraphina still hasn't left after the incident. She was still on the

PENELOPE "I...I...Umm," I stuttered."Well, since she doesn't know how to say it, let me..." Seraphina interrupted."...Enough!!" Jonathan cuts in abruptly."I will answer you, I will answer everything but not in this park with people watching and phones raised and her standing there enjoying every second of it." I glanced at Seraphina. "That is what she wants and I'm not ready to give her what she wants."Phew!! That was a close one.Jonathan took one step back which was not him agreeing to it but him giving me the space I requested.Seraphina had been watching us with her arms loosely crossed, that posture indicates that she has already seen and knows the ending of it."How irresponsible she is to have a child who doesn't have a father," she said. "Stop," Jonathan ordered."I'm just making an observation." She rolled her eyes at me. "You've always been good at buying time, Penelope. stalling and making people wait until the moment passes and everyone forgets what the question was.

  • Love, Lies, and a Billionaire's Regret    Chapter Forty-One: Say It

PENELOPE "Uhhh... Mrs Park." My voice came out immediately. She looked at me from behind the pram, her face still pale from the afternoon's events, still carrying the guilt of someone who had been used without knowing it."Take the pram and go home," I ordered. "Right now."She looked at Seraphina. Then at Jonathan, then back at me."Hey! Penelope". Seraphina called out."Please go home. I'll be right behind you." I ordered. She lifted the handles of the empty pram, and walked away down the path without uttering another word. Her footsteps faded quickly into the distance.I turned back to face Seraphina fully.Seraphina stood where she was knowing fully well that she had constructed this situation carefully and was now simply waiting for it to unfold.Jonathan hadn't moved an inch, he was still looking at Nora. The way she had laid her head on my chest, with one fist wrapped in my coat fabric, and her head turned outward, her eyes still moving between the fountain and him with that c

  • Love, Lies, and a Billionaire's Regret    Chapter Forty: Everyone Is Here

PENELOPE "You should go," I said. But Jonathan didn't move, He stood on the path twenty feet away with his hands at his sides and his eyes on my daughter, he stood firm on his ground which meant he had decided that he wasn't going to leave even when I had instructed."I'm not going anywhere," he said quietly.Mrs. Park had stepped back discreetly, pushing the empty pram a few feet away, and giving us space. She was pretending to look at the fountain.Nora was still in my arms.I moved her to my right side and turned my body slightly away from his direction, putting a few more inches between them.Jonathan noticed my movements. "I'm not going to do anything," he said."I know, there's nothing you can do," I said."Then why did you just step back?""Because I needed to."He accepted that without arguing, which was somehow harder to deal with than if he had pushed. He took one slow step forward but I held my ground this time.He stopped again... Maybe fifteen feet now. Close enough that

  • Love, Lies, and a Billionaire's Regret    Chapter Thirty-Nine: Empty

PENELOPE *** I noticed the door before I reached the top of the stairs...It was open slightly, maybe two inches. It was as if I had forgotten to lock the door when I went out in a hurry OR maybe someone entered without wanting to be heard. I had locked that door this morning, I always locked that door. I stood on the landing and looked at the two-inch gap and my body understood before my mind did. The cold moved through me from the inside. Not the air, or the building, but from inside. The feeling only comes when something is wrong and you haven't confirmed it yet but you already know. Then I pushed the door open and called. "Mrs. Park?" My voice a bit shaky. The apartment was quiet, too quiet for a room that has a toddler in it. "Mrs. Park," I called out louder this time. But my response...Nothing. I moved to the kitchen and it was empty. The cup Mrs. Park used when she sat with the baby was still on the counter. It was half full and the milk had gone cold. "N

  • Love, Lies, and a Billionaire's Regret    Chapter Thirty-Eight: Not Like That

Seraphina's POV"He went to see her??" I huffed, tightening my grip around my wine glass. My source on the other end of the phone was still talking. They gave me the details, timing, and duration, mentioning that Jonathan had stayed for nearly thirty minutes at Penelope's office. He left on foot instead of calling his driver right away, which meant he walked part of the way back because he needed time to think.Jonathan only walked when something troubled him."Thank you," I said. "That's all."I ended the call and set my wine glass back down without taking a sip.The kitchen was quiet including my whole apartment. Everything around me was exactly as I had arranged it: the right lighting, the right temperature, the small vase of white flowers on the island that I replaced every four days because I liked things fresh.Everything was in order and everything was managed except this...I knew he would find out about the breach. I didn't expect him to go there in person and I certainly did
