Chapter 2

Author: Man D
Elyssa POV

On the drive home from the hospital, a text popped up on my phone screen.

“Come to Velvet Hour. Let’s make up for our anniversary party.”

He still remembered?

Had I… misunderstood him?

I rested a hand on my belly and whispered, “Baby, should we give your dad another chance?”

There was no response, of course. The pup was still far too small.

After hesitating for a moment, I changed my mind and asked the driver to turn back.

Velvet Hour was dimly lit, the air thick with a mix of citrus peel and sharp liquor.

The moment I pushed open the door, I froze.

Asher was sitting with Raya.

She tilted her head slightly toward him, and he looked back at her with an easy smile,so warm and carefree it felt like they were the ones who should be celebrating tonight.

My steps faltered. A sharp ache clenched at my chest, and for a second, I almost turned to leave.

But Asher was already waving me over, so I forced myself forward and slid into the seat across from them.

Asher reached for my hand. His palm was warm, the gesture so natural it made my heart skip a beat.

“Raya wants to apologize for what happened with the flower arch,” he said softly.

Raya jumped in.

“I’m really sorry, Elyssa. I didn’t plan things properly and ruined your anniversary party.”

Her voice was sweet as honey, but the apologetic look and smile she gave were aimed entirely at Asher, not me.

I nodded and gave a small, polite smile, unwilling to stir up any more trouble.

“What would you like to drink? The owner’s a friend of mine. Let me make you a cocktail.”

Before I could answer, Raya was already on her feet, striding toward the bar.

As her hands flying expertly from one bottle to another, Asher’s eyes followed her every move, his expression full of proud and admiration.

“Even with her injury not fully healed, she still wanted to make it up to you herself,” Asher said. “You should try to be more understanding. Don’t treat her like an enemy all the time.”

He flipped open a small velvet box and slid a ring onto my finger with practiced tenderness.

The oversized moonstone caught the dim light, casting a delicate blue-white glow that made me gasp in awe.

Asher lifted my hand and pressed a gentle kiss to the back of it.

“I was going to announce our marking ceremony at the party,” he said softly. “Don’t worry, I’ll make it up to you.”

His gaze was warm and tender, achingly familiar, the look I’d fallen in love with.

In that moment, all my worries and pain seemed to vanish.

I was lost in his gaze, willing to trust him once more.

“Ta-da!” Raya reappeared, sliding a cocktail toward me. “Try this. I just learned the recipe.”

Without thinking, I lifted the glass and took a sip.

The rim was dusted with a fine powder, giving it a strange texture…

I drank again, then suddenly froze.

“Raya… what’s on the rim?” I asked.

She smiled. “Almond powder! Just a little—it makes it taste amazing, right?”

My fingers stiffened, and the glass nearly slipped from my hand.

“Asher,” I choked out, “I’m allergic to almonds. You know that.”

Raya’s smile instantly faded, and she shot me a sharp glance.

“Come on. It’s barely anything. Just admit you don’t like me and stop hiding behind your allergies.”

Asher blinked, caught off guard, then quickly tried to soothe me.

“It’s only a tiny amount, probably nothing will happen… Raya didn’t know about your food allergy, you can’t blame her.”

Soon, my skin began to itch, and my breathing grew shallow.

I grabbed Asher’s hand, gasping.

“I don’t feel good… Take me to the hospital.”

Raya sneered, snatched a small box from the bar, and slammed it down in front of me.

“Just take two pills. You’re making a fuss over nothing. So dramatic.”

I picked up the box and my eyes immediately landed on the warning:

Not for use during pregnancy.

A chill ran through me, and I pushed the pills aside.

“No, Asher. I’m not taking this. Take me to a hospital, please.”

He seemed not to hear me.

Opening the box, he pushed the pills and a glass of water toward me.

“I really do spoil you. Such a tiny issue and you have to make a scene? Tell me, why won’t you take it?”

My vision blurred. I couldn’t explain.

I couldn’t risk him finding out about the pup.

Raya’s eyes turned red.

“It’s all my fault, Asher. Everything I do is wrong, arranging the venue, the floral arch, even making the cocktail…”

She looked at Asher, pain written across her face.

“I know Elyssa’s never liked me. I tried so hard to please her… and this is how it ends.”

The warmth in Asher’s eyes disappeared, replaced by ice.

“Elyssa, take the pills,” he said. His tone was no longer a request.

I clutched my swelling throat and shook my head violently.

“I can’t… hospital please…”

“Asher… I shouldn’t have come back. I shouldn’t have shown up in front of you.” Raya suddenly ran off, crying.

Asher jumped to his feet, ready to follow her.

I grabbed the hem of his jacket, pleading, “Please… take me to the hospital first… I’m begging you…”

His voice was icy, completely void of warmth. “Elyssa… bravo. You deserve an Oscar for that performance.”

He brushed my fingers off the fabric with a flick and strode after Raya.

My throat felt like it was on fire, my breaths coming in shallow, panicked gasps.

In desperation, I swept the glass off the table.

It hit the floor, shattering into a thousand pieces.

And my heart shattered right along with it.

Elyssa POVI was yanked to the ground, the impact jolting through my body. Instinctively, I curled protectively around my belly, but cold sweat still trickled down my temples.Asher lunged to grab me but was a step too late.He threw himself forward, shielding me tightly in his arms. When I looked up, Raya stood before us, that same fake, sugary smile tugging at her lips.“Asher, you haven’t been home in so long. Didn’t you miss me?” she cooed. “Come on, let’s go back together.”Asher ignored her, his voice low and urgent as he turned to me.“Shirley, are you hurt? Do you need to go to the hospital?”I shook my head through the pain, my eyes locked coldly on Raya. Then Asher’s gaze shifted to her. Instantly, it turned razor-sharp.“Raya, do you have any idea how far you’ve crossed the line? Out of respect for our years of friendship, I’ll let this go once. But from this moment on, Elyssa and I never want to see you again.”Tears streaked down her cheeks as she screamed,“Asher, we’re

Elyssa POVAsher’s warmth closed in around me, wrapping me up in an instant.“Don’t leave me, Elyssa.”His face was pressed against mine, his voice thick with emotion, vulnerable in a way I’d never seen before.“I love you, Elyssa. It’s always been you. Only you.“I was a fool to hold you to Luna’s standards, thinking that was the only way you’d be worthy of the role. “But I was wrong. You’ve always been enough. You never needed to change a thing.”He pressed a gentle kiss to my hair, his eyes full of desperate pleading. “Please forgive me. Give me a chance to make things right.”I turned my head away, but tears betrayed me, slipping silently down my cheeks.Asher cupped my face and tenderly wiped my tears. “And… the pup needs a father too, doesn’t he? I can’t just let you raise him all on your own.”The words landed like a blow, making me flinch. With my eyes closed, flashes of our past, both joy and pain, rushed through my mind.I drew in a deep breath and gently pushed him away.

Elyssa – POVIt had been a while since I left Asher. The pup growing inside me was getting bigger day by day. My bump was already showing.Sometimes, he would stir tiny, fluttering movements that felt like a fish gliding from one side of my belly to the other. The new neighborhood I’d moved into was quiet and safe, and everyone at my new job had been kind.Once they found out I was pregnant, they always checked in on me, offering help without me even asking. The things that happened before I left Asher had hurt me deeply, but love didn’t dissolve overnight, not after five years. To keep myself from thinking about him, I often threw myself into work, cramming every hour with tasks until I was too tired to feel anything. It was a Saturday morning when the doorbell rang, dragging me out of a rare sleep-in. I yawned as I shuffled to the door.“I told you guys, just leave the package at the...”The words died in my throat. The man standing outside didn’t say a word.I looked up. And every

Asher POVNot long after I got home, the doorbell rang. For a heartbeat, my chest lifted with hope.I opened the door, expecting that familiar, happy figure to rush into my arms the way she always did.But when I opened the door, my smile froze.“You?” My voice turned cold in an instant.Raya beamed and pushed her way inside without waiting for an invitation. “I heard Elyssa left.”Of course she knew.I’d been calling everyone in our circle looking for Elyssa.I didn’t answer. I sank onto the sofa, exhausted.Raya laughed, “What’s there to be sad about? You should be glad she left on her own. Honestly, Asher, she was just a stand-in for me anyway. Now that I’m back, forget her.”Her words slid past my ears. I stared at her, stunned. “Stand-in? What are you talking about?”“Come on. They all said you were heartbroken after I left, and then you went to Elyssa.”I cut her off, my tone firm. “Who told you that? Elyssa was never anyone’s substitute. She’s the person I care about most. Yo

Asher POVI pushed the door open, and darkness swallowed me whole. Not a single light was on.Frowning, I flipped the switch and stepped inside.“Elyssa? I’m home. Are you here?”Normally, the second she heard the key turn, she’d come running—barefoot, hair flying—straight into my arms. She’d chatter away about every little thing that happened during the day until I couldn’t help but laugh. But tonight, the house was silent and cold.No laughter. No footsteps. No Elyssa.I set the bouquet of yellow roses on the coffee table and pulled out my phone, shaking my head with a helpless smile.“Still mad after all these days… I’ve spoiled you rotten,” I muttered. The notification tone indicated that her phone was turned off.I opened our chat, the last message was from days ago.Looks like she’s still holding onto that mood. I exhaled a laugh that wasn’t really a laugh and pressed record.“Elyssa… remember when I said I wanted you to take two days to reflect? Honestly, I’ve been reflecting

Elyssa POVHe seized my wrist in a bruising grip. “What did you do to her?”Raya screamed hysterically, and Asher immediately pulled her into his arms, wrapping her in a protective hold. He stroked her shoulder gently, murmuring, “It’s okay. I’m here. She won’t dare touch you.”Then his gaze fell on me.“Care to explain?”I frowned, my voice tight. “Asher, let go of me.”He didn’t loosen his grip; his fingers dug in tighter, a flash of restrained anger in his eyes.“How many times have I told you? Stop treating Raya like some imagined enemy. Why are you still picking on her?”I shot back, my tone icy, “Did you actually see what happened?”He paused for a moment, then smiled“Do I need to? It’s pretty obvious, isn’t it? What more is there to deny?”Raya sobbed dramatically against his chest, her voice breaking.“Forget it… Asher, I’ll just leave tomorrow. I don’t want to make things hard for you.”Asher’s grip tightened so suddenly that pain shot up my arm; my bones felt like they mig
