"How were the dishes last night?" Lana whispered to me as I shoved a piece of toast into my mouth.
I ignored her… but barely. My sleepless night had put me into one hell of a mood and I wasn't up to putting up with her bullshit today. Ricky eyed me from across the dining hall where he was shoveling food onto a plate before he dropped into the chair next to me. "Spill." He said via mind-link, not paying me any attention externally."Didn't sleep well and that bitch Lana keeps pushing my buttons." I reply, reaching for his coffee cup and taking a sip."Yuck! What is this?" I exclaim, barely able to swallow the bitter swill I'd just sipped.Ricky grins at me, looking more like a doofus than ever. "Green tea." He answers proudly. "The guys and I were discussing the benefits of clean eating last night as a way to improve performance. I'm giving it a shot." "You can keep that rubbish, thank you. I'm off to get a coffee refill to get me through this day. Will catch up with you on the training grounds." I stand, ruffling his already messy hair as I head back to the coffee pot. After downing my second cup of coffee, I head back to the cabin to sort myself out for training before catching up with the rest of my girls on the grounds. Amy was going through a series of yoga poses as a warm-up so I joined in, trying not to fall asleep on my feet. Finally the caffeine seemed to kick in as Jaydon arrived and sent us for our morning jog around the lake. I refused to be last again so made a wide berth around Lana, overtaking some of the guys as we thunder towards the finish. "Much better, Natalia!" Jaydon praises as I come in fifth. "Today we're going to do some basic combat in our human form then again in our wolf form. This is just for me to measure where you're at with regard to defense and offense." Jaydon loops a rope into a wide circle, getting us to crowd around it. "The aim is to get your opponent out of the circle. Matt and Daniel, you're first." We all sit down on the ground a few feet away from the rope, a precautionary measure I was glad for when Matt picked up Daniel and hurled him out of the circle and into the dirt. We all applauded and cheered as the next two entered the circle. Again and again, opponents bit the dust. "Lana and Natalia. In." Jaydon shouted from his vantage point. It took all I had within me not to laugh at this turn of events as I strode into the ring. Immediately Lana charged, hoping to catch me unaware. I rolled neatly out of her way, forcing her to skid to stop herself from running out of the arena. Rookie mistake. She turns and charges me again… clearly her only move. I side step her, grabbing onto her arm and yanking it down, throwing her body into a less than graceful summersault. She lands hard, knocking the wind out of her before she slowly gets up and charges at me again. I bend down low and throw her over my body and out of the ring with a thud."Not bad for a rogue, huh?" I sneer down at her softly as I pass. Through the cheers I hear Jaydon say "Good defensive Natalia. I look forward to seeing your offensive soon. Lana, we'll have to work with you." The scent of my mate finds me and I'm immediately drawn to the figure leaning against a tree in the distance.Good thing you only sensed him now, huh babe? Ember taunts. I ignore him and join my friends, watching the rest of the fights until we were told to go for lunch."Guess that showed her." Ricky whispers loudly as he passes me, making a bee-line for the food. I find myself not being hungry so merely pick at my lunch until we're called back to the training grounds. "Ok everyone. Now it's your wolves turn. Feel free to shift and we'll begin." Immediately the guys start stripping and I feel a hot blush spread across my face. Megan grabs my hand and we make our way to a corpse of trees where we doff and fold our clothes before shifting. Oh yeah, baby! Ember celebrates as my bones break and reform, auburn hair sprouting all over my body as she takes control."Let's go and shine." Megan's dark brown wolf pads past me and I rush to join her. Ricky's white wolf, Storm, heads to me and rubs his muzzle affectionately against my neck in greeting. It's been a while since I've seen him. I smell Liam somewhere, but focus my attention on the big black wolf in the centre of the arena - Jaydon."Alright runts!" He mind-links us. "The objective is to pin your opponent. Megan and Ashley, you're first." We watch as the girls battle it out, their skills basically even. Eventually Ashley tricks Megan and throws herself on top of her, pinning her down. A few more rounds go by with Jaydon adding pointers here and there. "Eric and Natalia." He finally calls. I can hear a grumble of surprise among the recruits as we enter. This is nothing we haven't done a million times under our Grampa's tutorage. We know each other's moves like our own and eventually Jaydon barks a halt."I guess we're not going to have a winner between you two." He laughs before calling in the next opponents.Ricky sits next to me as we watch the final fights. "Ok runts. We're done for today." Jaydon announces.Megan and I go back to our trees to shift back and dress. I know the second she is back in human form."You guys were awesome! You have to teach me some of those moves!" She exclaims, her voice slightly muffled as she pulls on her shirt.I promise her I would and we walk back to the cabin together. "Arg! I've got a million messages from my mom, I'd better call her to tell her I'm still alive." Megan jokes as she juggles her cellphone from one hand to the other. I take that as my escape so tell her I'm going to chat to Ricky. As soon as I exit the cabin I feel as if there is an invisible thread pulling me toward the thick woodlands to the right of our cabin. Without a second thought, my feet find themselves traipsing through the trees until the sound of a waterfall lures me further in. Water cascades down a cliff face, splashing into the crystal clear pool at its base. It reminds me of home and I feel a twinge of sadness as I think of Grampa being home alone."You're quite a good fighter." I hear Liam say behind me, pulling me from my nostalgic thoughts. "You must have had a great teacher.""The best." I reply softly as I turn to face him. He smiles brightly at me and I feel a twinge of annoyance that he's here. "Don't you have some pack business to attend to?" I ask him. "Your alpha is going to be pissed if he hears you've been watching the recruits all day instead." His eyes glisten with laughter as he leans against the nearby tree to study me. "It's kind of hard to focus on my duties when your scent calls out to me constantly, mate." There. He said it. The M word. "Well try harder." I respond cockily, annoyed with him for some reason. "I don't have time to dedicate myself to training and deal with you at the same time. I'm sure if the alpha discovered my mate is in his pack he'll send me to do my training elsewhere."Liam looks at me thoughtfully."I guess you're right." He says before turning his back and leaving me.After yet another restless night, I drag myself out of bed. It's been two weeks since I've seen Liam but every night when I close my eyes I dream of him. It's the mate bond. Ember explains in her bossy way. It's trying to get you to jump his bones so you can either accept that or reject him. I tell my roommates to go ahead to training and I'll catch up, wanting a moment to myself to compose myself. I enter the small bathroom, splashing ice cold water on my face to force myself to wake up. A quick glance in the mirror makes me cringe. My skin is pale, my green eyes slightly bloodshot and my auburn hair looks more brown than auburn, hanging limply down my back. Try as I might, I only make myself look faintly better - plating my hair and pinching my cheeks to try instil some colour into them. "That's as good as its going to get." I say to myself before I brush my teeth, throw on my training kit and run down to the training grounds where th
Jaydon paid me a visit before dinner, telling me to rest and recover. The incident had reached the Alpha's ears and he had ordered a respite for the recruits. Two days off of training and we were allowed to visit the nearby village. I'm sure Megs, Ash and Amy are ecstatic about that, the topic of shopping having come up numerous times in our cabin. "Thanks for visiting me, Jaydon." I say, feeling my body being pulled towards sleep once again. I've got no clue what drugs Doc had given me but they sure did work a charm. I woke up with a start as the sun was starting to rise. I could smell the lingering scent of Liam and knew that he had been in the room. I managed to pull myself out of bed and made my way to the bathroom, the pain being more of an irritation now than actual pain. Megan had dropped off some clothes and toiletries so I gratefully took a much needed shower and brushed my teeth before dressing in the tank top and shorts Megan had provided.
After days of little to no sleep, my body launched itself into full blown hibernation and I spent the two days we were given off between sleeping and snacking on the mountain of food Megan kept me supplied with. By the end of the second day I was more than ready to face the world and get back to training. After our obligatory run around the lake, Jaydon and another man who introduces himself as Beta Suarez announce that we'll be having a special guest to our training today. Alpha Fletcher himself! "The Alpha is so hot. He trained the same time as my brother and we ended up hanging out all the time." Lana giggles, tying her shirt into a knot at the front so that it tightens suggestively against her breasts. Juan and Matt overhear the discussion and roll their eyes in unison. "You planning on being the Alpha's new bedmate there Lana?" Juan asks her with a suggestive thrust of his hips. "Although I'm sure once with you would be enough."
Liam is sitting in one of the armchairs, his face resting in his hands and looking rather defeated. His hair is also wet having washed it in some other bathroom somewhere in the house and he is clothed in a pair of jeans, leaving his broad chest bare. He looks up as I move a bit closer and a strange light flashes in his eyes before he stands up and comes to me. "You saved my sister, Natalia. I cannot think how I can ever repay you." His voice os hard but I can read the suppressed emotions in his face. "I just did what any lycan would have done." I take hold of his hand, offering my support. "How is she doing?" He pulls me closer to him and I feel warmth spread throughout my body as he wraps his strong arms around me and rests his head on top of mine. "She'll be fine. Vicky is stronger than she seems, she was just caught off guard. I think the emotional wounds may take some time to heal though." I wrap my arms around his waist and lean into him. "I take it the two other pe
Slow and secret definitely upped the intrigue factor, however getting away from the other recruits without being noticed proved to become increasingly difficult. I secretly found myself bumming out on training exercises just so that I'd get saddled with dish duty. Every time without fail Liam would appear and help me out then we'd either chat for ages afterwards or end up in a heated make out session. I have to admit that every time I looked at Liam I felt the need to thank the fates that we were mated. If I had to spend my life linked with another person I was glad it was him. He is the whole package: intelligent, funny, sexy as heck! It's hard to keep my hands off of him when he's nearby… but maybe that's just the whole mate-bond thing. Jaydon had set us to sparring every day since Vicky's attack, nervous that the assailants would return since they didn't accomplish whatever their goal was. We could all tell that the man was living on edge. "You're throwing this round on purpose.
Liam takes a step back and places his hands on my hips."What's wrong?" He asks, worry etched onto his face. I sigh and break away from his hold on me. It's too hard to form words with him being so close to me. "This whole mate bond thing is getting in the way of my training." I rush out, feeling as if the walls are closing in around me. "What do you mean? We've been discreet and no one else has discovered anything about us. What's really going on?""It's a distraction, ok?" I basically shout at him. "I need to focus on improving my skills and you're a bloody distraction!" He looks slightly smug at that admission and I realise I'm using the wrong tactic. "I don't want a mate, you know that. I've never wanted a mate and I never will want a mate." His expression changes suddenly and he looks as if I've just slapped him, staggering back slightly as the verbal blow. "I thought you may eventually feel something for me and that you'd change your mind…" He walks to the bay window and
Three weeks flew by pretty quickly. I learned that Kane was a pretty good hunter using the crude spear he had made by attaching the knife we'd been given onto a long, straight sapling. We feasted daily on pheasants that seemed to be abundant in the woods as well as berries and other fruits we forraged for. Kane even threatened to shift and take down one of the deer which we know are living in the woods. Kane and I had explored the area around our camp, hoping to find another team to raid in order to ease some of the monotony of our daily lives, but we found out that we were very much alone in our little corner of the Dark Moon land. Our relationship had turned to easy comradery, able to read each other as if we have known each other for years instead of the brief three weeks."You'd better be keeping your eyes closed! " I call out to Kane as I quickly wash myself in the stream. He chuckles from where he rests in the shade but doesn't respond further so I quickly finish and throw on
I'd be lying if I said that Kane wasn't a darn good kisser. Even with my extremely limited experience in that department, I could tell that much was true. His lips are soft and consuming, warmth spreads through my body and takes my breath away, leaving me a little dazed. "What was that for?" I ask when he eventually pulls back. He smiles and it almost looks seductive, like he was daring me to ask for more. "I felt like it." He responds before getting up and heading to the stream, pulling off his pants as he walks away to reveal his muscular backside. I quickly avert my gaze and busy myself cleaning up the already spotless camp, although I'd be lying if I didn't imagine grabbing his bare backside with my hands. When he returns he acts as if nothing has happened and continues to engage with me with the relaxed banter I had become accustomed to. It almost made me wonder if what had happened had been in my imagination - almost. "Good," Ember mutters, almost to herself. "We don't need
