Chapter 3

Author: Against the Flow
I nodded before passing the letter of disownment to Dad. He didn't seem to expect that I'd be ready to sever our relationship once and for all, judging from how disappointed he looked when he gazed at me.

"You really are cruel."

I raised an eyebrow in return before glancing at Valerie, who looked rather smug.

"Oh, I'm not as cruel as you, that's for sure. After all, a normal man wouldn't have brought his mistress home the day after his wife died," I retorted.

Dad was rendered speechless. After he took the letter, he signed it without hesitation.

Even though I was already mentally prepared for this moment, I still felt my heart throbbing in pain. After all, my own father had abandoned me.

I turned on my heel and ascended the stairs. Every step exuded unwavering resolve and defiance.

Only when I returned to my room did I sink to the floor as though I had lost my soul. Sorrow and agony engulfed me in an instant.

The next day, I was still asleep when I was awakened by the noises outside my room.

I could hear Valerie saying nervously, "Ellie, this is Daphne's room. You can't stay in this room."

I opened the door to see Valerie stopping a woman from entering my room. When I made out Elaine's face, I felt as though my blood had just turned to ice in my veins.

Never in a million years would I expect Valerie's daughter to actually be Elaine, William's beloved lover.

God sure knew how to make me look like the biggest clown ever.

The men whom my mother and I loved the most ended up getting stolen by the mother-daughter duo!

Elaine approached me happily and took my hand. "Daphne, can I stay with you? I like your room!"

I yanked her hand away before closing the door in Elaine's and Valerie's faces.I wanted to shut them out of my life.

Dad—no, Charles yelled angrily from outside my room, "Where are your manners, Daphne Thorn? Elaine's your younger sister, and yet you never greeted her properly!"

I snapped, "I don't have any sisters!"

Charles began chastising me loudly, his voice coming out in a rumbling roar. Then, he issued an order.

"Elaine loves your room. Besides, you're about to get married soon. You might as well give your room to Elaine and move to the attic. She's going to be living in your room from now on."

What little familial love I had for Charles ultimately dissipated. The heart-wrenching pain was back to haunt me.

I just smiled bitterly. As I smiled, I could feel tears rolling down my cheeks. I no longer cared about the wisps of conversation that took place outside my room. But somehow, I just knew that the scene outside my room painted an amicable picture of a family comforting and soothing each other.

I didn't want to see Elaine at all, so I left with my suitcase in tow. Even when Charles saw me leaving, he didn't bother stopping me. Instead, he reminded me to carry out my side of the promise.

"I'll let you know when the wedding date is set. If you dare disappear on me, I won't hesitate to dig up your mother's ashes."

As I watched the family of three eating happily at the dining table, I retorted, "Unlike you, I'm a woman of my word. If you dare lay a finger on my mom's ashes, I'll make sure that you won't receive your money!"

When I was about to leave, I spotted the delight in Valerie's and Elaine's eyes. Now that I was gone, they'd be able to really exert controll.

Charles didn't have a single cent under his name. The fact that Valerie was still willing to marry him meant that she had her eye on the one-million-dollar check that he'd be receiving after selling me.

Even if Charles were to get his hands on the money, I would never let him enjoy it. Once the time came, I'd like to see if Valerie was still willing to stay with an old codger who didn't have any money at all.

At that moment, my phone buzzed once. It was a text from William.

"Where did you go?" it read.

I just stared at the text in a daze. For a moment, I didn't know how to answer that question.

William's concern for me just made my heart throb even more in pain. I raised my head to force my tears back into my eyes so that I didn't cry.

After that, I just wandered around aimlessly with my luggage in hand. Since I didn't know where else to go, I decided to sit on a bench in the park and stare at the scenery, spacing out.

I didn't know how much time had passed before I sensed a figure looming over me. When I lifted my head, I saw a familiar face that made my heart wrench in pain once again. Tears began streaming down my cheeks.

William wiped my tears away for me with his fingers. In a helpless tone, he said, "If you're done with your tantrum, let's go home together."

I fell silent at his words.

Clearly, William was starting to get mad at me. His tone became lower and gruffer.

"Now now, Daphne, don't be wilful."

I just remained silent.Elaine seemed to have suffered from an emotional breakdown, for she kept alternating between crying and laughing. William finally spoke up. "I found out about everything. Elaine worked together with the household staff to punish you behind my back, causing you to lose the baby."I'm sorry, Daphne. I didn't know about this at all. She was the one who lied to me and told me that you were doing fine."I wanted to come home at first, but I was very busy with work. So, I stayed outside. I thought you'd hear me out once I got home, but… but this time, I ended up losing you."Elaine was momentarily stunned after hearing William's explanation. Her smile soon deepened, twisting her features even more. Every word she said was akin to a blade cutting deep into William's heart."What a liar! You participated in this incident as well! If it wasn't for you giving me the chance, could I even have hurt Daphne in the first place?"That's where you're wrong, William! You

William looked at me fawningly. This time, he adopted a pitiful tone."Let's talk it out, okay?"I could see how bloodshot William's eyes were. There was stubble growing near the edge of his mouth, making him look rather haggard. The sight of him looking like this made me sigh lightly. As far as I remembered, William had never looked this pathetic in the past.I replied quietly, "Just let go of the past, William."But William shook his head. He gazed at me seriously as he began explaining everything to me in a sincere tone."Daphne, I was wrong. I was the one who allowed Elaine to get close to me and hurt you. But I didn't mean to do that. I love you, you see… You're the one I truly care about."As for Elaine, I once thought I was in love with her. But after getting to know you, I fell in love with you. She's just an ex to me now."I treated her well because I was fooled by the misconception that I was in love with her. Now that I've sobered up, I realized that you're my true l

Axel took a deep breath to suppress his boiling rage."Mr. Blackburn, this banquet is meant to celebrate my marriage to my wife. If you have any complaints, we can address them later."Then, he took my hand and attempted to leave the banquet hall. But the moment I turned around, William grabbed me by the arm as well. "Get over here! You're going home with me!"I struggled against his grip while rejecting him angrily. "Let go of me! I won't go back with you!"But William refused to let me go. He lowered his tone. "I'll have a proper talk with you once we get back. Just give me one more chance." I told William that I didn't want to have anything to do with him anymore."I'm not going to give you another chance!"After that, I shoved him away with all my strength."Don't touch me! Also, stay the hell away from me! Axel is the man I love right now!"William swayed heavily a few times because of the force. Once he steadied himself on his feet, he tried to drag me over to his s

The moment I appeared in a gown that was worth hundreds of millions of dollars, everyone's attention was on me instantly. My appearance left them stunned."Axel actually married a young and beautiful woman!""The gown she's wearing is worth 100 million dollars! That ring on her finger is the symbol of the Youngs! I heard that the price tag on this ring is enough for one to buy 100 listed companies! Clearly, she's his true love!""That young lady sure is lucky!""Lucky? Axel is already in his 40s, not to mention his legs are injured. Do you really think he's capable of satisfying her in bed?""Their bedroom life doesn't matter as long as they're happy being with each other.""I know, right? I think they make a good couple."I just smiled in the face of everyone's comments. As for whether or not Axel could satisfy me in bed, I had no answer to that question. After all, I had never slept with him.Meanwhile, Axel remained nonchalant. He was already used to hearing all sorts of gos

Pursing my lips, I replied softly, "Is it worth paying a million dollars just to marry me?"Axel replied without hesitation, "Not at all! You're worth all the good things I can give you in this world. Honestly speaking, your father was the one who put a one-million-dollar price tag on you. I didn't think he'd sell you in the first place, but I knew that you were miserable there. So, I might as well spend a million dollars buying you your freedom."After that, he passed me a divorce certificate."If you're willing to try and accept me into your heart, I will be very happy. But if you truly wish to leave, I'll still respect your choice."I gripped the divorce agreement, feeling quite sad on the inside. To think that an outsider would contemplate that much for me…Then, I remembered the way Charles had abandoned me for Valerie and the way William hurt me repeatedly for his beloved childhood sweetheart. Finally, I remembered my dead baby. The people I cared about never cared about

  • Love, Over and Out   Chapter 11

Although I had married Axel, an older man in his 40s, he still treated me very well. In fact, he'd give me whatever I liked and wanted. On top of that, he also respected my opinions.During this period, I enjoyed the unconditional love that my husband had showered me with. He didn't manipulate nor use me for anything—his love for me was nothing but sincere.I stared at the pile of luxurious gifts in my room, feeling a little distracted."Mrs. Young, these are the accessories that Mr. Young has custom ordered for you. Among them are necklaces, bracelets, and all sorts of other jewelry as well.""That's right. Mr. Young even hired a famous fashion designer to design all seasons' worth of clothes for you. All of them look gorgeous.""These bags are limited edition as well!"The household staff kept boasting about how nice Axel was to me. I did experience the love and kindness he had shown to me, and I'd also remember them well. It was just that I didn't really like the gifts he kept
