Chapter 4

Author: Bubbles
By the time dawn was about to break, I finally made it through my heat.

I went back to my room and slept for a while. When I woke up, my head still felt heavy and foggy. I reached for the thermometer on the nightstand and checked my temperature.

It read 103.5 degrees Fahrenheit.

I forced myself out of bed, wrapped myself in thick layers of clothing, and dragged my sluggish body downstairs. That was when I ran into Arthur and Elsa.

They looked like they were about to head out.

Elsa greeted me warmly, and I managed a strained smile in return.

Arthur frowned when he saw that. "Elsa is talking to you. Are you mute or something?"

Mute.

It'd been a long time since I'd heard that word.

When Arthur first brought me home, I barely spoke. The household staff used to gossip behind my back, calling me mute. Over time, the rumor spread at school as well.

Arthur had flown into a rage because of it. He fired every household staff who had talked about me and declared in front of the entire school, "Clara is my sister. If I ever hear anyone call her mute again, I'll make sure they become one first."

Maybe he didn't remember anymore.

He'd forgotten plenty of things he once said.

I turned to Elsa. My throat was so hoarse that it felt like sandpaper scraping against my vocal cords, but I still spoke obediently. "Good afternoon, Luna Elsa."

Elsa bumped Arthur's arm playfully, sounding mildly reproachful. "Don't talk to her like that. Clara might just be in a bad mood. She didn't look well last night."

Her words seemed to awaken a thought in Arthur, and a trace of disgust flashed across his gaze.

He wrapped an arm around Elsa's shoulders and said flatly, "Don't worry about her. You need to go to the hospital for your checkup. Let's go, or we'll be late."

The word "hospital" caught my attention immediately. I endured the burning sensation in my throat and spoke. "Can I go with you? I think I might have a fever."

In truth, my body felt like it was burning from the inside out.

Elsa stepped closer and placed a hand on my forehead. There was a cruel glint hidden in her eyes as she smiled. "You don't have a fever, Clara."

I stared at her blankly, not understanding why she would say that.

The next second, Arthur looked at me, disgust written plainly in his eyes. "Clara, if you're trying to get attention, don't use something as pathetic as pretending to be sick. Who do you think would believe that?"

My lips moved, but I didn't know what to say.

Elsa had only said one sentence, and he immediately decided I was lying. In his eyes, I was nothing more than a foolish girl faking illness for sympathy.

He didn't believe me at all.

"Arthur, don't be mad. Let's go. We're running out of time," Elsa said, clinging to his arm and speaking in a soft, coaxing tone.

Arthur's lips curved into a doting smile. He raised a hand and lightly ruffled her hair. "Alright. Let's go."

With that, the two of them left hand in hand.

Forget it.

I didn't owe explanations to those who trust me, and explanations were wasted on those who didn't anyway.

I walked out as well, my steps stiff and mechanical.

Outside, the cold wind cut through my layers. I waited ten full minutes before I finally managed to flag down a cab.

By the time I reached the hospital, my steps felt weightless and unstable, like the floor could tilt out from under me at any moment.

I could tell my wolf still hadn't recovered from the heat I'd forcibly suppressed. Thus, it'd temporarily lost its healing ability.

The doctor set me up with an IV drip. After the infusion, I felt a lot better, so I went home.

The moment I stepped inside, I realized the mansion was fuller than I'd ever seen it.

Arthur and Elsa were both there. The butler and household staff stood in a neat row in the living room. The air felt tense in a way I couldn't put into words.

As soon as I walked in, every pair of eyes swung toward me at once.

Arthur stared at me. "Elsa's bonding ring is missing. Have you seen it?"

I shook my head in response. I hadn't seen it.

But whether it was my imagination or not, I caught a flash of malice in Elsa's eyes as she stood beside him.

The next second, a staff hurried over, holding a ring in both hands. "We found it. The ring was found in Ms. Bennett's room."

Elsa covered her mouth in shock, as if she couldn't believe what she was hearing. Tears gathered in her eyes as she looked at me. "Clara, why would you do this? Why would you steal my ring?"

I stared at her, stunned, my mind going blank. I couldn't understand why she was framing me. All I could do was try to explain, uselessly. "I didn't—"

"Clara, I'm extremely disappointed in you. How did you become like this?"

Arthur looked down at me, then turned and issued an order. "Lock her in her room for two days. No food or water. She needs to learn her lesson."

I stood there, frozen and staring at Arthur in disbelief.

Arthur didn't waver. He just kept looking at me with that same icy gaze, like I was an unsightly stain.

In that moment, he felt like a stranger.

The person standing in front of me wasn't the brother who used to worry I'd get sick or go hungry. He was an Alpha who seemed to hate me.

The staff obeyed his command. They came forward and grabbed my arms. I didn't struggle. I let them drag me into my room like a sack, then lock the door from the outside.

[Clara's POV]"Maybe you should go home tonight," Callum said before leaving, his expression still edged with concern. "I don't feel great about you staying here alone."After starting school, I'd rented a small studio near campus for convenience and usually stayed there.A lot had happened today, but I didn't want my parents to worry, so I hadn't told them anything yet."It's fine," I reassured him. "The door is solid, and there are surveillance cameras outside. I won't go out tonight. Don't worry. I don't want to go home. I just want some alone time.""Alright," he said, no longer trying to change my mind. "Call me right away if anything happens."I nodded, saw him off, closed the door, and let out a long breath. The incident had scared me badly, but once the shock settled, what I felt more than anything else was exhaustion.I took a hot bath and went to bed."Clara!"In my haze, I heard Arthur shouting my name. Even in my sleep, I couldn't help but frown. He was relentles

Callum was fast. No matter how hard I pushed myself, I was still a step behind. When I reached the abandoned factory, he was already holding Clara tightly in his arms.Once again, I was too late.I instinctively clenched my fists and scanned the surroundings.A middle-aged werewolf was sprawled on the ground nearby, groaning in pain, and next to him was Elsa. She looked at me in panic. "Arthur, I can explain!"I crouched down and seized the middle-aged werewolf by the throat."What were you doing here?" I said coldly. "Tell me the truth."My fingers tightened as I spoke. The middle-aged werewolf screamed, "Alpha Arthur! Please let me go! I haven't done anything yet! It was her! That she-wolf made me do it. She told me to assault her and record everything. She promised me a large sum afterward!"I smiled after hearing that, patted his face, and pointed at Elsa."How much did she offer you? Do it to her instead. Record it, and I'll pay you double."The werewolf hesitated and

[Arthur's POV]I had no idea how long I sat there in the cafe. It wasn't until the sky outside started to dim that I finally shifted my stiff body and stood up.The moment I did, my phone rang. It was Elsa.I frowned and rejected the call, but shortly after, she called again.I answered, my voice flat. "What do you want?"Her voice on the other end was soft and fragile, as if she'd just been crying. "Arthur, where are you? Can we meet?"In the past, hearing her voice would've stirred some sympathy in me. But now that I knew what she was really like, all I felt was irritation."I'm busy. Don't contact me again," I said coldly. "I'll never forgive you for what you did to Clara.""Don't say that," Elsa sobbed. "Arthur, don't treat me like this. You said you loved me.""I never loved you," I said after taking a breath. "I was only putting on an act so Clara would give up on me. But I regret it. I never should've done that. I never should've given you the chance to hurt her. I fail

While my mind was still hazy, a bucket of ice water was dumped over my head.I jolted awake, only to realize that my hands and feet were tied up, and there was a wad of cloth stuffed in my mouth so I couldn't make a sound. Before I could even figure out what was going on, a familiar figure appeared in front of me.It was Elsa. What was she doing here?Elsa walked up and yanked the cloth out of my mouth. Her face was twisted with hatred as she gritted out, "Clara, I finally have you exactly where I want you."I suppressed the wave of panic welling up in me and tried to keep myself calm. "What do you want? We can talk this out. You don't have to do this.""What do I want?"Elsa flashed a vicious smile. "Because of you, Arthur rejected me in public. I'm ruined. I have nowhere to go now. What do you think I want? Can you make Arthur come back to me? Can you fix my reputation? I have nothing left, Clara. Nothing at all!"I thought of what Arthur had said when he showed up yesterday,

[Clara's POV]Callum caught up with me as soon as we left the cafe. That was when I remembered Arthur had punched him earlier. I quickly flagged down a cab and took him straight to the hospital to get checked out."There's a minor fracture on the nose bridge, but it's already healing," the doctor said.Only then did I finally relax a little, though I still couldn't shake the guilt.Callum sighed all of a sudden.I looked at him anxiously. "What is it? Does it hurt somewhere?""What if my nose collapses?"Callum looked a little upset as he spoke. "Then I'll be ugly, and no one will like me."His tone was so dramatic that I couldn't help laughing.Callum laughed, too.On the way back, he asked casually, "So, was that your destined mate?"I lowered my head and nudged a small stone along the road with my shoe. After a while, I said, "He used to be. Before I left, I went to the priestess and had the mate bond broken."Callum's tone immediately lightened. "That makes sense. Why k

[Arthur's POV]The flicker of irritation that crossed Clara's eyes made my confidence waver for the first time. She really was different now.Even so, I said what I had come to say, my tone carrying a hope I hadn't even realized was there. "I've already called off the bonding ceremony with Elsa. Now, can you come home with me?"Clara frowned. "You canceled the bonding ceremony? Why?"My eyes lit up. She didn't know yet. That explained her coldness. As long as she knew I had publicly humiliated Elsa and ended the marking ceremony for her sake, she would forgive me."Because she framed you for stealing her bonding ring. I know everything now," I said seriously. "I called off the marking ceremony in front of everyone. She's paid the price she deserved. Clara, aren't you satisfied now?"I watched her closely, waiting for her to react the way she always used to, to rush into my arms and come home with me.She didn't."Alpha Arthur."That distant form of address made my heart skip
