Chapter 4

Author: Steel Orange
Winter hung up after hearing Liam's accusations. She looked at Regina, who was sprawled across the oversized bed. She was lounging under the air-conditioning and eating ice cream.

"Aren't you afraid that I'll take a picture of you like this and send it to Liam?" Winter asked.

Regina didn't even blink. "What's he going to do? Get mad? He'll probably say I'm cute and that I know how to enjoy life. I'm not like you. You always look miserable. He got sick of that a long time ago."

"This is the first time I've seen such a shameless mistress. Didn't you swear you'd rather die than be the other woman back then?"

Regina's face flushed. Humiliation turned to anger. She stepped toward Winter, then stopped three feet away from her.

A second later, she yanked the breathing mask off the bedside machine and shoved it into Winter's hands.

"The one unloved is the real mistress," Regina spat. "Let's see who he believes—you or me."

She dropped to her knees with a loud thud and slammed her head on the floor. "Winnie, please! Give it back! I can't breathe!"

Winter was still trying to process what was happening when a violent kick broke open the door.

Liam rushed in and scooped Regina into his arms. He snatched the mask from Winter before fitting it back over Regina's face.

"Regina, are you okay?"

Regina sagged against him. Her breathing was shallow. "It isn't Winnie's fault. She just lost control because I took her father's heart. She didn't mean it…"

Liam's gaze darkened. "You're just too kind. That's why people step all over you."

He turned to Winter. The warmth from his eyes was gone.

"I was the one who decided to give Regina the heart. If you're angry, take it out on me. Do you have any idea that you could've killed her?"

Winter remained calm. She pointed toward the camera in the corner of the room.

"It wasn't me. Check the cameras if you don't believe me. Besides—"

She paused. "It was just a breathing mask. She wasn't in danger. Have you forgotten that you shut off my dad's life support for ten full minutes?"

A flash of violence crossed Liam's eyes. "We’ll see how long you can keep being stubborn."

He started to get up, but Regina clutched his sleeve and shook her head weakly.

"Don't check. I don't want you to see me like this. I don't want you to hurt over this," she said, coughing. "I believe Winnie didn't mean to do it. Please give her another chance."

Her coughing fit left Liam visibly shaken.

"Alright, sure. We won't check the cameras, but I can't just let her humiliate you like this."

His voice hardened as he turned back to Winter. "She knelt and begged you. You'll kneel and apologize the same way."

Winter stared at him in disbelief.

"I'm not going to admit to something I didn't do, Liam. I'm not kneeling to her. You wouldn't sink so low as to threaten my dad again, would you?"

Liam stepped closer, and his tall frame cast a shadow over her. "There's no need to complicate things, is there?"

He gestured toward the door. Several large bodyguards rushed into the room.

His eyes met hers casually. "Make her kneel and apologize. Keep going until I say stop. Leave the door open. Make sure everyone knows what happens when someone hurts Regina."

The guards didn't hesitate. Two of them pinned Winter's arms while another grabbed her from behind.

She struggled violently at first. Her hair fell loose as tears streamed down her cheeks. "You'll regret this, Liam!"

Liam looked down at her from above. His expensive wool coat was still perfectly pressed. "The only thing I'd regret is not teaching you a lesson for Regina today."

The last of Winter's resistance drained away when she met his ice-cold gaze.

She went limp, letting the guards grip her hair and slam her head against the freezing marble floor.

Each impact exploded inside her skull. Pain tore through her forehead. It was as if her skull were about to shatter.

The noise drew people passing through the hallway to look inside the room.

Winter and Angeline had a few drinks. Worried Liam might harass her again, Angeline walked her back to the room before leaving.Winter had just finished showering when her phone rang. "Still awake, Dr. Liddell?"She dried her hair with a towel and told him about catching up with Angeline. "We hadn't seen each other in five years. We talked forever.""You only had drinks? Aren't you hungry?"Winter pressed a hand to her stomach. "Now that you mention it, I'm a little hungry."In the next second, the doorbell rang.Confused, she opened the door. "Chris! What are you doing here?"Chris stood there looking weary. He had several takeout boxes in his hands."Well? Surprised?"Winter dug into the feast spread across the table. "You still haven't told me how you ended up here."Chris poured her a glass of water. "I have friends in Harbor City, too. I came to do some catching up.""Really?" she asked as she looked at him skeptically. He avoided her gaze but gave up after a moment. "

The heavy basement door flew open with a kick. Dust billowed into the air.A thin figure that was curled up in the corner stirred and slowly turned her head toward the noise.Regina hadn't seen sunlight in years. Her skin looked unnaturally pale. One piece of bread and one cup of water a day had reduced her to skin and bones. Most of her hair had fallen out.She propped herself up and squinted toward the light. Liam's imposing figure was hidden in shadow. When Regina finally saw his face clearly, her brows twitched. She scrambled to his feet. "Mr. Jager, please let me out. I beg you."Liam slipped his hands into his pockets and looked down at her."Do you know why I've kept you alive, Regina?"He paced around the narrow basement. "It's because I want you to apologize to Winnie! You killed my child. You destroyed my marriage."I'm not letting you off so easily. I'll keep you alive and make sure you suffer."Regina collapsed onto the concrete. Each breath she took sounded labo

"Mr. Jager! We've got something!"Sebastian hurried over and handed Liam a news article from a Harbor City medical website. "An International Cardiology Forum is being held here."Liam scanned the list of invited experts line by line. Winter's name wasn't there."Mrs. Jager canceled all her identity records before leaving," Sebastian said. "Is it possible that she changed her name?"Liam's eyes paused on one entry that sounded similar to her name. Wynter Lawson."Find out who Wynter is. I think that's Winnie!"Sebastian made a few calls and quickly tracked down the hotel Winter was staying at.Liam didn't hesitate. He turned the car around and headed straight there.Just like at the airport, the hotel front desk refused to provide any information, citing guest privacy. If Sebastian hadn't stopped him, Liam might've smashed the counter in a moment of rage."Mr. Jager, why don't we use the simplest method there is?" he suggested. "We'll just wait."So, Liam and Sebastian waite

On the way to the hotel, Angeline glanced sideways at Winter. She looked more radiant than ever. Angeline sighed in disbelief. "We haven't seen each other in five years, and now you're a recognized cardiologist!"Winter smiled. "I still surprise myself sometimes. Maybe Chris was right. I did have an advantage."Angeline caught the name immediately. "Chris? Your boyfriend?""No. He's just a good friend," she said, lifting her hand as if to swat her."You know, your message from five years ago really scared me to death. You just said, 'I'm leaving. Don't look for me.' I called you immediately, but your number was already disconnected."A trace of regret crossed Winter's face. "I'm sorry, Angie. I didn't reach out right away because I was afraid. You know how powerful he is."Angeline tilted her head and smiled. "How could I blame you? Right after you disappeared, Liam showed up at my office almost every day."When Winter had first started dating Liam, Angeline had been fiercely ag

Five years later, at Harbor City International Airport, Sebastian followed closely behind Liam. A sheen of sweat had formed on his forehead."Mr. Jager, the client has already left. I'm afraid we—"Liam stopped abruptly and spun. "How did this even happen? Who was handling the coordination on their end? This kind of mistake is unacceptable."Sebastian wiped his brow."The medical sector isn't our area of expertise. This isn't the first setback," he said, hesitating before trying again. "Perhaps we should consider withdrawing from healthcare altogether—""I won't. I don't regret entering the medical field. This is the only connection I have left to Winnie. Even if I have to grind my teeth through it, I'm seeing this through," he cut in.Sebastian sighed softly. "I'll contact the client again right away."…Meanwhile, Winter stepped through the arrivals gate in a crisp suit. Her long hair fell in loose waves down her back. She removed her sunglasses and waved toward a woman wait
