Chapter 3

Author: Bill the Bell-Ringer
Rachel burst into tears first. "Sonia, don't look at me like that. I'm scared."

She shrank behind Declan, as if I were the thief.

Declan frowned and stood in front of her. "Sonia, you might have misplaced it. Don't scare people off so abruptly."

I stared at him. "It was from my mom."

His tone was as indifferent as if he were talking about an old piece of clothing. "I know. So you really should think it over and see if you've misplaced it."

Rachel bit her lip, tears falling. "Declan, forget it. Let me explain."

She looked up at me, carefully saying, "Sonia, that bracelet is too old. I noticed the patterns have worn away, so I thought I'd take it to be cleaned for you."

My heart sank to the bottom. "Where did you take it?"

Rachel gave the name of a jewelry store.

I turned and left.

Declan caught up to me, his tone impatient. "Sonia, can you please stop being so fussy? Rachel did it out of kindness."

The jewelry store was not far from the Fletcher family's residence.

When I arrived, the craftsman behind the counter was using his tools to polish the inside of the bracelet.

The harsh metal sound was like a knife scraping against bone.

I rushed over. "Don't move!"

The craftsman was startled.

Rachel followed close behind, explaining tearfully, "I just wanted to make it look a bit more youthful. Sonia is usually so plain; I thought she wouldn't like such an old-fashioned style."

I picked up the bracelet.

The name 'Sonia' had originally been engraved on the inside.

My mother had chosen it herself while she was still alive. She had said that once she was gone and there was no one left to back me up, this bracelet would keep me company in her place.

Now, half of that name had been polished away. It felt as if the last trace of my mother's voice, left just for me, had been forcibly erased.

Declan glanced at it and frowned. "If it's ruined, I'll buy you a new one."

I looked up at him.

He was still wearing that old shirt, yet there was not a trace of a poor man's insecurity in his eyes or expression; only the irritation of being disturbed.

"Sonia, don't scare Rachel. It's just an old bracelet; is it really worth making such a fuss?"

I smiled. "How much is my mother's keepsake worth to you?"

Declan paused, looking at me as if I were being unreasonable. "Do you have to talk like that?"

Rachel sobbed even harder. "Sonia, I'm sorry. Can I pay you for it? Don't blame Declan. It's all my fault."

As she spoke, she surreptitiously clutched Declan's sleeve. "I only did it because Declan said you hated old things."

I looked at Declan.

His eyes flickered before his expression hardened. "Enough. Don't drag me into this."

I took out my phone. "I'm calling the police."

Declan's expression finally shifted. He grabbed my hand. "Sonia! Don't involve the police. Rachel is still young; do you want her to end up with a criminal record?"

I asked him, "What about me? My suitcase was pried open, and my mother's keepsake was ruined. Am I just supposed to endure it?"

Declan lowered his voice, his tone softening just as it always did in the past. "Nia."

He rarely called me that. He only ever did so when he knew I was at my breaking point.

"I know you feel wronged. How about I make it up to you with 100 performance points later? Let's just leave it at this."

Looking at his face, inches from mine, I was suddenly reminded of three years ago.

Back then, he had stood in the rain waiting for me to get off work, telling me his family was struggling, and he was afraid I would suffer if I stayed with him. My heart ached for him, and I told him it did not matter; as long as we worked hard together, a little hardship was nothing.

In the end, he really did make me suffer for three years.

I called the police.

When the officers arrived, Declan looked grim enough to kill. Ultimately, he had no choice but to admit he had taken the bracelet from my suitcase.

He said, "I thought you wouldn't mind. Didn't you use to say you'd give me anything I needed?"

I tucked the ruined bracelet into my bag and did not answer. I had suddenly realized that he would not understand, no matter what I said.

As I stepped out of the jewelry store, a text message from the hospital popped up on my phone: [Abnormal results from your gastric follow-up examination; please be admitted for further testing as soon as possible.]

Declan saw it too and sneered. "Again? If you were really in pain, take a clear photo of the test report. But you just had to be in pain today. What a coincidence."

I gripped the bracelet inside my bag; the hard edges dug painfully into my fingertips.

For the first time, I did not explain. I simply looked at him and retorted, "Declan, you'd better remember what you just said."

He turned his head away in annoyance. "Don't act like I'm mistreating you."

I turned and walked away.

Behind me, I heard Rachel whisper, "Declan, is Sonia angry again?"

Declan replied, "Let her be. She'll be mad for a few days and then come crawling back."

I did not slow down. This time, I did not look back.

She cried downstairs at Fletcher Group's building, saying she loved him and that I had no right to keep clinging to him since I did not want him anymore.Declan did not see her.The security guard asked her to leave, and Declan passed a message along through his assistant. "What I owe Sonia has nothing to do with you."He finally learned to draw a clear line, but this realization came too late.I began to live my own life. I ate on time and had my follow-up examinations on time. I bought drinks whenever I wanted and ate cake whenever I wanted. When I saw a dress I liked, I no longer looked at the price tag first. When a friend invited me on a trip, I said yes. When I took my first flight to the seaside, I stood in the sea breeze and

After the public apology dinner, Declan went quiet for a long time. He stopped sending money or gifts, and he stopped showing up at my doorstep. He simply sent one message every day, like clockwork.Declan: [Make sure you eat on time.]Declan: [It's getting colder today; don't drink anything cold.]Declan: [Don't forget your follow-up appointment.]I rarely replied. Occasionally, I would send a simple 'Ok', and that alone would make him happy for ages.A friend remarked, "He looks like a dog that's been caught in the rain."I chuckled. "A dog wouldn't be as petty about keeping score as he is."She laughed too and asked, "So are you going to see him?"I looked at the last message he had sent.Declan: [Sonia, I'm not asking for your forgiveness, but could you give me a chance to finish what I have to say?]I agreed, not because I had gone soft, simply because some things need to be brought to a close personally.I arranged to meet him at Garden Restaurant at 8:00 pm. He had bo

I had not planned on going to Declan's public apology dinner, but he said that the items had been delivered to the venue. It was the original box of my mother's bracelet.Hence, I went. The venue was booked at a very expensive hotel. The crystal chandelier was so bright that it was dazzling. There were flowers and desserts on the table.Relatives of the Fletcher family came. His friends came. Even Rachel came, but she was sitting in the far corner, her eyes red, as if she had suffered a great injustice.Declan held this banquet not just to apologize. He wanted to publicly humiliate Rachel and also publicly clear my name. Up to now, he still did not understand that the last thing I wanted was to be gawked at by everyone all over again. As soon as I entered, the big screen lit up. It showed the bills for the past three years: rent, water and electricity, caretaker fees, nutritious meals, every penny I saved, every penny I transferred to him.Even my memo was included: [I don't want

On the day I was discharged from the hospital, Declan was waiting at the hospital entrance. He was wearing a brand-new suit, his hair was neatly combed, and he was carrying a jewelry box in his hand.I used to love how he was always so neat and tidy, standing out in the crowd like sunshine. Now, I only found it glaring.I walked past him.He reached out to grab me, but his hand stopped in midair. "Nia."I did not respond. His voice was awfully hoarse. "I transferred the money to you. You didn't accept it. The house, the car, you can have whatever you want. I was a jerk before. I shouldn't have pretended to be poor and tested you."I stopped. "Do you think I didn't accept it because I think it's too little?"His expression froze. "That's not what I meant.""Then what do you mean?"I looked at him and asked slowly. "Declan, do you still think that money can make up for these three years?"His lips moved, but not a sound came out of them.I carried my bag of medicine and walked

Declan checked the accounts until the early hours of the morning. At first, he just wanted to prove that I was not being treated as unfairly as I thought. However, the more he went through the records, the paler his face became.Three years ago, he said the rent was 2,400 dollars, so we each paid half. The actual rent was 1,600 dollars. The extra money was transferred to Rachel. He said his mother needed a caretaker after her surgery, so I transferred 800 dollars every month. However, the hospital records showed that Anita never stayed at that hospital. The one who was hospitalized was a distant relative of the Fletcher family. The money was eventually collected by Rachel on their behalf. He said the company could not afford the salaries, so we had to save on food. I ate sandwiches with him for two months. At the same time, he bought Rachel a dress worth over 3,000 dollars.Remark: [Good luck with your interview, Rachel.]Declan sat in the study, staring at the screen, his fin

On the day Declan returned to the country, he brought me a silk scarf. He had bought it in the discount section of the duty-free shop.He stood by my rental house door and rang the doorbell three times, but no one answered inside. He frowned and called me.The first call could not get through. The second call also could not be connected. He got annoyed and called the landlord, Ryan Steinman. When Ryan came to open the door, he thought we had been arguing. The door opened, and Declan froze in place. The place was empty. My cup was gone. My slippers were gone. My few clothes in the closet that had worn out were also gone. The refrigerator was wiped clean. Even the instant oatmeal I usually kept on standby was gone.Ryan said, "Ms. Golding moved out very promptly. She didn't even bother with the security deposit and asked me to hand the keys over to you."Declan took the keys, and his expression looked terrifyingly grim. "What does she think she's doing?"Ryan glanced at him. "She
