Chapter 5

Author: Cookie Nine
Seaforth Club was in complete chaos. An electrical fire raged out of control, filling the halls with thick smoke as Brandon frantically searched for Nina.

Meanwhile, Rosalie had just stepped out of the private room when the panicked crowd shoved her back inside. The door slammed shut behind her, locking her in. Desperate, she banged on the door. "Help! Let me out! Is anyone there?"

But everyone was too busy scrambling to escape the burning club. Her shouts were lost in the chaos.

Smoke slithered in through the door gap, sending Rosalie into a fit of violent coughs. She yanked off her coat, pressed it tightly over her nose and mouth, and bolted for the window.

Just as flames surged into the room, she clenched her teeth, rammed her shoulder into the glass, and leaped.

Seaforth Club loomed three stories above the ground. The landing sent a jolt of pain through her body, leaving her unable to drag herself forward. Her legs burned, and it felt as if they had been smashed to pieces.

Just then, she caught sight of the fleeing crowd. There was Nina, freshly rescued, hovering over Brandon's unconscious form on a gurney.

A knot of dread coiled in Rosalie's chest. Biting back the pain, she forced herself up just in time for the paramedics to grab her and bundle her into an ambulance.

When they finally reached the hospital, Rosalie ignored her own injuries and hurried straight to Brandon. He was being wheeled into the emergency room, his legs covered in bloody burns.

"Brandon!" Rosalie stumbled after the gurney, her eyes wild with fear.

But the first thing he said when he weakly opened his eyes was, "Nina... Where is she? Is she safe?"

Rosalie went still.

His voice was faint as he continued, "Let me see her. I need to know she's safe..."

The doctors rushed to wheel him into the emergency room, but he kept calling for Nina, insisting on seeing her before they treated him.

Rosalie's voice was desperate. "Brandon, please! You need help now. Your burns are bad. You can't wait!"

But Brandon didn't care about his injuries. There was only one thing on his mind. "Nina… I need to see Nina…"

Rosalie staggered back a few steps at his desperate calls, her eyes glistening with tears.

He had already thrown away his life once, leaving her behind in the flames to save Nina. And now, here he was, risking himself all over again just to ensure Nina's safety. Didn't he realize that the pain he was causing Rosalie now hurt more than dying ever would?

At that moment, Nina finally hurried over, grabbing Brandon's hand from beside the gurney. "Don't worry about me, Brandon! I'm fine! You need help now. I'll be right here when you're done!"

With just those words from Nina, Brandon finally relented and let them wheel him into the emergency room.

The doctor approached, holding the surgical consent form. "Who here is family to the patient?"

Rosalie instinctively rose to her feet, but Nina snatched the paper from the doctor. "I'm his legal mother. That means I'm the one who signs."

With that, she shot Rosalie a smug look.

And she was right. Rosalie and Brandon had married in secret. She didn't even have the right to call herself his family.

Meanwhile, Nina could stand proudly by Brandon's side without question. As his stepmother, she wielded that title like a weapon, stealing every role that should have been Rosalie's.

No one knew Rosalie was Brandon's wife. Sometimes, not even Brandon remembered.

She sat slumped on the bench with her eyes fixed on the floor, her heart heavy with pain.

Just then, Nina walked up. "You've seen it for yourself. No one can ever take my place in Brandon's heart. He'd die for me without a second thought. Marrying you was just a way to hide our relationship. I'm only showing you this because I want what's best for you so that you can finally move on. Don't waste another second waiting around for him."

Rosalie shut her eyes. Holding back tears, she asked bitterly, "Do you really enjoy watching him live and die for you?"

"I just need him to keep proving he loves me—the same way I love him with everything in me."

"If you love him that much, why did you leave him and marry his father in the first place?"

Overnight, news of the Searle Group building being engulfed in flames blew up across the internet, sending shockwaves through the entire country. By the time the Lardners, who were abroad, caught wind of it, five days had passed.Rolf and Priscilla couldn't help but mourn the tragedy, but Julie and Elijah saw it as the Searles' own doing."The Searles have been coming after our family for generations. Now that they've burned themselves to the ground, that's just karma doing its job," Julie said, her voice dripping with contempt.Elijah agreed.Priscilla jumped in, saying, "We should keep this from Rosalie. Her wedding's coming. Let's not have this spoil her mood."The whole family nodded in agreement.Rolf slid the newspaper with the international news story under the coffee table, leaving only the headline visible—"Internal Strife Within Searles Group Sparks Deadly Blaze—Board Members Perish in Flames".Brandon was the fire's only survivor. His body was charred beyond knowing,

Brandon flew back overnight. He learned from Trent that before he flew to Fremoria, someone at the gathering had caught him calling Rosalie his wife.Opportunistic blackmailers had used that recording to extort a fortune from Searle Group's board in exchange for their silence.Enraged, the board became certain the Lardners had orchestrated the scheme. Within days, they retaliated by unleashing a team of hackers to infiltrate Lardner Group's systems, stealing massive amounts of confidential business data.If those secrets got out, Lardner Group's stocks would plummet, bankrupting the company and burying it under insurmountable debt.Brandon hurried to the board meeting, but as he reached the door, he caught the board members laughing inside."The Lardners are done for this time. These confidential files aren't just Rolf's life's work. They've got proof of his son, Elijah's, bribery schemes. Once this gets out, the family won't just face public scandal. They could all end up in pris

For a while after that, Brandon stayed in Fremoria, clinging to the hope that Rosalie might still forgive him. But Elijah had already started forcing Brandon to sign the divorce agreement by using threats, intimidation, and even outright violence. No tactic was too extreme.Yet Brandon's bodyguards were just as strong as the Lardners' men. No matter how hard they tried, the Lardners couldn't lay a finger on him, much less force his signature. The stalemate dragged on, and tensions rose with each passing day. Then, one night, Raphael got involved and made Brandon regret ever being born. That day, Raphael reached out to Brandon and asked him to come by the Jacobson residence to talk things over. When Brandon arrived, he caught the sound of hushed voices drifting from the garden. They were soft, intimate whispers, with the man's voice unmistakably Raphael's.Curious, he followed the sound, stepping into the garden and past the rose bushes. He then froze at the sight before him. There,

Brandon let out a self-deprecating laugh as if he couldn't bring himself to believe Rosalie. He stepped closer, water dripping from his clothes and soaking into the carpet, leaving dark patches behind that slowly spread. It was like the gloom seeping through his chest."Don't lie. You still love me," he said, watching her face for any flicker of doubt. "You've sacrificed so much for me. You loved me for six years. You don't just fall out of love like that."Rosalie gave a bitter laugh, tilting her head back as she spoke, each word sharp and deliberate. "Brandon, so you do know how much I've sacrificed for you?"Her words cut like acid, each one twisting deeper into his chest until he could barely breathe."It's because I know exactly what you've sacrificed that I came to bring you back." Brandon stared at her, his eyes burning with raw desperation. "Rosalie, I was wrong. I hurt you over and over. But I'm begging you now—let me make it right. Let me love you the way you should've be

Later that night, after the engagement ceremony had ended, a heavy rainstorm raged outside.Inside the Lardner residence's study, Rosalie laid everything bare—her secret relationship with Brandon, their hidden marriage, her failed bet with Nina, and every hardship she had suffered. When the Lardners heard the full story, their expressions turned grim.Rosalie had expected resentment over her past with Brandon, but to her surprise, Rolf and Priscilla only felt sorry for her. "Rosalie has beauty, status—everything. And yet Brandon still drove her to this."Julie's heart ached when she noticed the scar on Rosalie's left arm, her eyes filling with tears. "You lied and said you got splashed with hot oil when cooking, but it was acid. I can't even imagine how much it must've hurt."Elijah's fists clenched, his voice tight with fury. "How dare Brandon do this to Rosalie? He's not getting away with it!"Rosalie said, "Elijah, I'm past caring. His life has nothing to do with mine now. The

The guests in the hall broke into hushed whispers."Is that Mr. Searle? Why would he be here?""The Lardners and Searles have been feuding for generations. No way the Lardners invited him.""Look at Mr. Rolf Lardner. His expression has gone completely dark."Brandon ignored the stares. He walked onto the stage, his eyes fixed on Rosalie as if she were the only person in the hall, and stopped directly in front of her. His voice was thick with emotion as he said, "Rosalie, I'm here to bring you home. Come back with me."For a moment, Rosalie was too stunned to speak. Her mind raced. Why was Brandon here? How had he even known she had come to Fremoria? And did he just say "home"? Had he really followed her all this way?No, that couldn't be right. He and Nina should be all wrapped up in each other's arms by now. He had no reason to come after her. Her departure should've been the best thing that ever happened to him.Rosalie took a step back, instinctively moving closer to Raphael
