I decided to prepare a snack and take it to Candace upstairs; she hadn't left her room much since the scandal that had happened in that house last week, and I was worried. What if she did something she would regret later? Besides, I had to play my role as a mother-in-law. I looked out the window at the vast field of pine trees that surrounded the Morton mansion until I lost sight of it, and there, I could see the mountains covered in snow on their tops as if they were big chocolate cakes with whipped cream topping.

That image brought a silent peace inside. When I moved into this house, that view of nature was the thing that I certainly liked at first. The toaster alarm went off, alerting me that the toast was ready. I went to get it, buttered it, arranged everything on the tray with a glass of juice, and then went up the stairs to Candace's room.
