Chapter 3

Author: Big Head
Skyler led Kimberly through the crowd and stopped in front of Dorothea. His voice was full of excitement."Mom, Kimmy's back."

Dorothea frowned, her gaze sharp as it landed on Kimberly. "You're already married. Why did you suddenly come back?"

Kimberly's lips trembled, and tears immediately rolled down her cheeks. "Ma'am, everything that happened before was my fault. I'm sorry."

Skyler's heart ached the moment he saw her cry. He pulled her into his arms without hesitation. "Mom, Kimmy's divorced now. Her ex-husband was abusive, a complete monster! Everything that happened in the past is over. I don't care about that anymore, and neither should you."

Dorothea had always known how much Skyler cared for Kimberly, but being scolded by him in front of so many people still made her feel humiliated. She turned and left without another word.

Then, Skyler's and Kimberly's eyes turned to Jeanette.

Skyler did not seem to feel the need to explain anything to her. He simply said, "Kimmy just got back and doesn't have a place to stay. Go home and get the room ready."

That usual commanding tone caught Jeanette off guard. She blurted out, "Ms. Affleck is moving into our home?"

Skyler raised a brow like it was obvious. "Of course. Where else would she go?"

Isadora let out a snort of laughter from the side. "Did you hear that? 'Our home'? She really thinks she's the lady of the Weisberg residence."

Laughter rippled around them, and Jeanette felt an overwhelming sense of isolation.

Three years ago, after the accident, Skyler spiraled and drank himself into oblivion day after day. When his house accidentally caught fire, Jeanette ran in without hesitation, carrying him out through the smoke and flames.

However, she was hit in the head by a falling light fixture and spent a month in the hospital. When she woke up, Skyler had been sitting at her bedside. He had asked her to marry him.

He bought this house as their marital home, promising it would be their future together. But now, as soon as Kimberly returned, she was moving directly into her marital home.

While Jeanette stood there in stunned silence, Kimberly gave Skyler a pitiful look. She mumbled, "Skye, does Ms. Schafer not want me in your house? If it makes her uncomfortable, I can just stay at a hotel. I don't want to cause trouble."

"Absolutely not. Hotels are full of strangers. It's not safe!" Skyler responded firmly, then turned to Jeanette with a stern look. "Nettie, she's only staying for a while. Don't be so petty."

Jeanette suddenly smiled. "You're right. I'm being petty. I'll head home now and tidy things up. You two enjoy yourselves."

She turned without waiting for a response, walking out of the ballroom filled with mocking laughter and cruel stares.

It was just a house, nothing worth clinging to. After all, sooner or later, it would belong to Kimberly anyway.

Back at the now quiet, empty house, Jeanette packed up the sunlit bedroom she had lived in for three years. She had always lived frugally, and Skyler had never once bought her anything.

So, even after all that time, her belongings barely filled a single suitcase. It was almost a relief since it was easier to walk away when you were not carrying much.

Just as she finished packing, her phone buzzed. Someone had uploaded a video to social media.

It was a clip from the party, and Skyler and Kimberly stood by the champagne tower, sipping from each other's glasses. They gazed at each other lovingly, looking like a perfect couple made for each other.

In the background, someone shouted, "Kiss! Kiss!"

Jeanette quickly turned it off, unable to watch anymore.

Not long after, Skyler and Kimberly returned home, both reeking of alcohol. When Skyler saw that Jeanette had already given up her bedroom for Kimberly, he looked pleased.

Once Kimberly went upstairs to shower, Skyler did something rare.

He actually sat beside Jeanette and even reached out to pat her head. "Nettie, I knew you'd understand. You always do."

Jeanette leaned away, just out of his reach. His hand froze awkwardly in mid-air, and his eyes darkened slightly. He muttered, "I told you already. Kimmy's just staying here for a bit."

"It's fine. Ms. Affleck can stay as long as she wants," Jeanette replied as she handed him a pile of documents.

"My former hospital is requesting some medical equipment. Can you take a look? Maybe Weisberg Corp could help with a donation?"

Skyler took the folder, laughing under his breath. "So, is this the price for letting Kimmy move in?"

Jeanette did not respond. Her eyes remained on the folder, nerves quietly building.

Skyler did not even read it. He signed everything without a glance, thinking it was her way of bargaining for some compensation for Kimberly moving into the marital home.

Naturally, he did not notice the divorce papers at the bottom of the pile.

Back in her room, Jeannette pulled out the signed papers and stared at his name at the bottom, not knowing how to feel.

Maybe she should cry because her three years of love and loyalty still led to nothing, or she could laugh because, for the first time in three years, she was finally walking away and starting over.

The ambulance sirens broke the peace of the area. Later, Jeanette stood covered in blood at the operating room door, unable to snap back to reality for a long time. Several hours later, Arthur emerged and said, "We saved his life, but his legs are completely ruined." Jeanette felt her heart slam against her chest like a drum, and she froze. The next day, Jeanette missed her flight back to Swosfran. Right before takeoff, Emerson called her. He said, "Nettie, whatever decision you make, I'll stand by it." Three days later, Skyler finally opened his eyes. When he learned that he would never walk again, that both his legs were beyond repair, he took a few deep breaths. Tears welled at the corners of his eyes and slid down silently. "Nettie, it was because of you that I ever stood back up. Now, I'm giving that back to you." Jeanette did not speak right away. She stared at him for a long moment, her expression unreadable. After a pause, she asked softly, "So, what do yo

The very next day, the official announcement about Skyler's removal from the CEO position at Weisberg Corp was sent out to the entire company. At the same time, Andre's divorce papers landed squarely in Dorothea's hands. Even though Andre was all the way in Craieland, his control over the situation remained absolute. Dorothea called him in tears, demanding to know why he was divorcing her. Andre's voice on the other end was cold and cutting. "You raised our kids into a bunch of good-for-nothings! One's obsessed with love and can't see the bigger picture; the other is hysterical and irrational. And you still have the nerve to ask me why?" He added, "Let's not forget that this all started because you lied to Jeanette. If you hadn't done that, things wouldn't have spiraled this far. The Newmonts have already issued me an ultimatum. If I don't take action to clean up this mess and stop you from harassing Jeanette, our business partnership is finished." Dorothea's hand trembled a

After they got together, Jeanette discovered that Emerson actually came from one of the city's most prominent families. His family had known about his years-long crush on Jeanette and was very curious about her. So, Emerson's mother, Lucille Forbes, used her birthday party as an opportunity to invite Jeanette over. The Newmont family threw an extravagant party, and Skyler was among the invited guests. He brought Dorothea along, unaware that someone else had been quietly following him. The ballroom doors opened, and Jeanette appeared in everyone's sight with her arm linked through Emerson's. Emerson's parents immediately approached them, beaming as they looked Jeanette over with obvious approval. The picture-perfect moment of the four of them standing together made Skyler feel painfully uncomfortable. Taking advantage of Jeanette stepping away to use the restroom, he pulled her out onto the balcony. "Nettie, I'm sorry about what happened last time. It was my fault. I didn

Hearing Jeanette sob her heart out, Emerson's eyes began to burn with fury. After taking her back to the hotel, he found Skyler at a bar. "You bastard!" Emerson snarled as he threw a punch at Skylar. Skyler, who was drowning his sorrows in alcohol, did not react in time and stumbled backward from the blow. When he turned around and saw Emerson, he immediately struck back. The two men began fighting, and everyone around them was terrified, with no one daring to intervene. Skyler had been drinking, so his reflexes were slower than Emerson's, and he was quickly pinned down. Emerson threw punch after punch, venting his fury. "You piece of shit, do you think you're romantic? Do you have any idea that you've destroyed Jeanette? She finally earned her PhD, and this was her first time as the lead surgeon! Yet, you've made sure she'll be surrounded by negative press from now on, and no one will ever notice that she's actually an excellent doctor!" Skyler's movements stalled mid-stru

The day Jeanette earned her PhD, she received a call from back home. Arthur told her he had taken on a critical patient whose condition happened to match the exact focus of her doctoral research. He hoped she could return to assist with the surgery. Jeanette agreed without a second thought. After all, this was a rare and valuable opportunity for real-world application. On the day of her flight, Emerson caught up to her at the terminal, rolling his suitcase behind him. He said, "So, I realized it's been a long time since I visited my family, too. I think I'll just go back with you." Jeanette did not call him out on the obvious lie. She knew he was just worried about Skyler bothering her again. The moment Jeanette landed back home, Skyler received the news. For years, he had quietly tracked everything related to Jeanette. He had overstayed his visa during his last trip to Swosfran and was banned from entering that country. So, he had been waiting for the day she would return. J

Skyler opened his mouth in disbelief, but not a single word of defense came out. He had no idea his own mother had deceived Jeanette and used underhanded means to force her into his life. And now, he finally realized that no apology, no plea for forgiveness, could ever make up for the pain Jeanette had endured. He and his family had, without even knowing it, cut Jeanette's heart into pieces, one cut at a time. With that, Jeanette turned and walked away. Skyler could not even find the strength to call out and stop her. Desperately, he asked, "Nettie, did you ever love me in the past three years? Even just a little bit?" Jeanette's footsteps stopped as memories of her first encounter with Skyler came flooding back. What Skyler did not know was that she had actually met him before his leg injury and hospitalization. Back then, Jeanette was still a medical student representing the school's scholarship recipients at a corporate sponsorship event. Skyler, dressed in a sharp suit
