Chapter 3

Autor: Drop the Beep
Early the next morning, Jake’s parents found out that he and Nora had slept together, and they showed up to force him back home.

Jake actually agreed to go. His eyes were bloodshot as he muttered, "I can't keep hurting Wesley like this."

Nora, however, refused to let him leave.

That evening, I received a frantic call from our wedding planner.

"Mr. Hart, I'm so sorry to bother you, but Miss Mitchell just bumped up the reservation for the venue you booked," she stammered, her voice panicking through the receiver.

"And... The names on the main display screen were just changed to Nora and Jake. Was this agreed upon between you two?"

Three months ago, Nora had told me how fast popular wedding venues booked up. Even though I hadn't officially proposed yet, she suggested locking in our dream setup early. White tulips, our custom entry track, the crystal floral archway, every single detail was handpicked by the two of us.

Back then, she had wrapped her arms around me, whispering, "Come next May, I'm going to make you the happiest groom in the world."

By the time I rushed to the hotel ballroom, the lights were already gleaming. The giant display screen, bright and clear, had swapped my name out for Jake’s.

Nora and Jake spotted me the moment I walked in.

Nora didn't cancel the proposal setup. Instead, she walked right over to me and whispered a quick explanation, "I'm just borrowing the venue for Jake for one night. His parents don't believe I'll take responsibility for him, and they're threatening to drag him home. You'll still get your wedding. Next year, I'll recreate this exact setup for you, down to every detail."

I stared at the crystal archway I had personally picked out, a bitter laugh rising in my throat. The future I had waited five years for was, in her eyes, just a set design that could be copy-pasted whenever it was convenient.

The moment Jake’s parents arrived, Nora dropped to one knee before Jake in front of them.

She pulled out a men's ring box. At first, I assumed she had borrowed the wedding band I had chosen for myself, too. As the spotlight hit the metal, I saw it clearly: it was a custom ring meant exclusively for Jake. His initials were engraved on the inner band, and the sizing fit only him.

Nora hadn't just handed over my wedding venue. She had already gone out of her way to order a unique ring custom-made for Jake.

Jake hesitated, his voice raspy. "Is this just a show for my parents, or are you actually going to marry me?"

Nora looked up into his eyes. "It's real. I'm going to marry you."

Jake turned his head to glance at me. He knew damn well he was standing in my place, surrounded by my wedding, looking at the girl I had loved for five years.

Yet after a beat of silence, he extended his left hand anyway. "Wesley, I'm sorry," he choked out, "I just... I don't want to be abandoned again."

Nora slid the ring onto his ring finger. Jake closed his hand into a fist, making no move to take it off.

When Nora leaned up to kiss him, he froze for a split second, but then his hands found her waist, pulling her close as he kissed her back.

His guilt was real. His desire to have Nora was just as real.

I didn't step in to ruin their moment. I simply turned around, found our wedding planner, and canceled every reservation and design plan under my name right in front of her.

"Whose names end up on this package in the future has nothing to do with me anymore," I told her.

That night, I packed up my passport, my laptop, and the rest of my belongings. Then I called the project director, Claire Donovan, to push my departure date forward.

Nora thought she was just borrowing my wedding for a single night to calm down a guy who might run off.

She had no idea I was leaving her behind, right alongside the stolen future that no longer had my name on it.

A week before my wedding, Jake came to see me.He looked far more haggard than he had three years ago. The custom ring Nora had made for him was no longer on his ring finger. He sat across from me, remaining silent for a long time. "Are you feeling pretty proud of yourself?" he said, "Nora didn't marry me. I lost my job, my friends—everyone treats me like a backstabbing snake."I looked at him calmly. "I didn't do any of that to you. You brought every bit of it on yourself."Jake's eyes turned red. "But if you hadn't handed her over to me at that engagement party, none of this would’ve happened!"Even now, he still convinced himself that I was the one at fault."I asked her to play a role for one evening," I said softly, "Did I ask you to wear my pajamas? To sleep in my bed? To hijack my wedding venue? You didn't betray me because I gave you an opportunity, Jake. You were just looking for an excuse you could use to justify it to yourself."His lips trembled. After a painfully lo

When my three-year placement wrapped up, the project I led took home the top honor in the industry. The celebration gala was set to take place back in my old city.My initial reaction was to refuse to go.Claire shut that down real quick. "You poured three years of your life into this result," she told me, "Don't go throwing away your own moment of glory just because of people who aren't worth the trouble."I ended up boarding the flight back after all. When I walked out of the venue hall, Nora was waiting outside.I hadn't seen her in three years. She looked noticeably thinner, the old radiance and easy confidence had completely faded from her eyes. She held the key to our new apartment tightly in her hand."Wesley." Her voice trembled. "The place is fully furnished now. Everything is decorated exactly the way you used to like it. Jake never set foot inside."I stared at her, my expression completely blank. "And?"Her eyes welled up with tears. "I haven't been with anyone fo

After the press conference, Jake moved back into the apartment. He set the custom ring down directly in front of Nora. "You promised you'd take responsibility for me," he said, his voice hard, "Everyone knows about us now. What right do you have to refuse to marry me?"Nora looked at him. "I said I'd take responsibility. That doesn't mean I love you."Jake burst into a bitter laugh. "You don't love me? Then why did you ditch Wesley to come running to me every single time? Why did you give me the passenger seat and the master bedroom? Why did you propose to me right in front of my parents, knowing damn well it was his wedding?"He stepped closer, his eyes intense. "Every time I reached out my hand, Nora, you chose me. Now that he dropped you, you're going to pin all the blame on me?" Nora couldn't choke out a single word in reply. It was because Jake was right. He had betrayed me, absolutely, but every single time, Nora was the one who voluntarily walked toward him.It wasn't lo

I thought moving across the country would put an end to everything, but the fallout from that livestream caught up to me in Chicago.Someone recognized me as the unhinged ex who maliciously slandered his best friend and harassed his girlfriend. Secretly recorded videos were leaked into our project group chat. Eventually, our corporate partners tactfully suggested replacing me as project lead.Claire placed a printed PR incident report on my desk. "Do you want the team to issue an official statement to clear your name?"I shook my head. "No. I'll handle it myself."Before, I chose not to defend myself because I was already planning my exit. Now, their lies were threatening my career and my livelihood. I was done taking the fall for them.I compiled every piece of evidence—five years of public social media records documenting my relationship with Nora, the full, unedited video footage from Jake’s engagement party, screenshots of Jake’s online forum post and his self-incriminating

The Chicago assignment was far more exhausting than I’d imagined. During my first week on-site, I barely got four hours of sleep each night. When Claire saw how ghastly pale I looked, she urged me to head to the infirmary.I shook my head. "I'm fine."The second the words left my mouth, the world went completely pitch black. When I woke up, I was lying on a hospital bed.A nurse stood over me with an intake form. "Why is your emergency contact line completely blank?"I stared at the empty space. It used to have Nora's name. Later, I added Jake's. One was the girl I loved for five years. The other was the best friend I trusted with my life.Yet when I actually collapsed, they were wrapped up in each other back in my master bedroom.I pulled my gaze away from the clipboard. "Just leave it empty."The nurse frowned, clearly disapproving.Claire stepped up and jotted her own cell number into the blank line. "For the duration of this assignment, I'm responsible for my team's well-

Early the next morning, my plane touched down in Chicago.Claire was waiting for me near baggage claim. She grabbed my rolling suitcase and gave me a warm smile. "Family didn't come to drop you off at the airport?"I paused, caught off guard for a second. Then I shook my head. "I don't have a family."My phone was buzzing nonstop in my pocket. Nora had been calling me from a dozen different burner numbers.I didn't answer a single one.Her latest text popped up on the screen: [Wesley, stop throwing a tantrum. I already sent Jake back home. We can talk about the wedding and work things out.]Even now, she still genuinely believed I was just having a petty breakdown. She thought I stormed off that night solely because I had to lend our wedding venue to Jake. She believed that as long as she came back, I would gladly put on a tux, put on the ring, and wait for her to walk down the aisle toward me again.I powered down my phone, popped out the SIM card, and switched to a new line.
