Chapter 2

Autor: Drop the Beep
Two days later, I finally sent my reply to that heavily delayed email: [I accept the three-year on-site assignment.]

I had only lent my girlfriend to Jake for a single night. Nora was the one who decided to lend him my status as her real boyfriend, too.

When Lyla started relentlessly harassing Jake, Nora did not bother consulting me. She simply had Jake move into the apartment we shared.

By the time I got home from work, the smart lock had already been programmed with his thumbprint. His sneakers were sitting in the hallway, his toiletries were lined up in our master bathroom, and all of my stuff, my pajamas, my razor, and my toothbrush had been banished to the guest bedroom.

Jake hovered near the door of the main bedroom, keeping his voice low. "I should take the guest room," he murmured, "I mean, this is still your place with Wesley."

Nora shook her head. "The main room has its own lock and a private bathroom. It’s safer for you."

Then she turned her eyes to me. "Wesley, you're adaptable. You don't mind crashing in the guest room for a few days, do you?"

I stared down at my belongings piled high in a suitcase, my mind flashing back to the day we first moved in together. Nora had wrapped her arms around me from behind, laughing as she whispered, "This is officially our home now."

Now, with a casual remark about how adaptable I was, she was kicking me out of our home.

Jake looked down at the pile of my displaced belongings. "Just for a few days," he repeated softly.

Then, he rolled his luggage straight into our main bedroom.

He hadn't brought any clean clothes, so Nora went to my closet and pulled out a brand-new set of men's pajamas. "Wear these for now," she said.

My chest tightened as I recognized them instantly. They were the fifth-anniversary gift she had ordered for me. I had only seen the order confirmation on her phone, and I hadn't even gotten the chance to unbox it yet.

Jake clearly recognized them, too. He held the neatly folded fabric in his hands, staring at me for a long beat. "Wesley, I'll buy you a new set to replace these, I promise."

Yet, he didn't set them down.

That night happened to be our five-year anniversary. Nora had made reservations at a nice restaurant a month in advance, where a small chocolate cake, my favorite, sat on the table. She had promised me that tonight would be strictly about us, with no mention of Jake.

The moment our candle was lit, her phone buzzed.

Jake’s voice came through the speaker, tight with suppressed panic. "Nora, she sent another threatening text. I know you’re out with Wesley right now, but I’m terrified to be here alone. Can you please come back?"

He knew what today meant to us, yet he still called my girlfriend away the exact second our candle was lit.

Nora stood up immediately. She sliced off the first piece of cake and pushed it toward me. "Give me thirty minutes," she said, "I just need to make sure he’s okay, then I’ll come right back."

I waited from dusk until the restaurant staff started turning off the lights. The candle burned down to nothing, the whipped cream melted into a mess, and I didn't take a single bite.

Nora never came back.

It was past midnight when I finally walked through the front door of our apartment.

The door to the master bedroom was cracked open.

Jake was wearing my anniversary pajamas, sitting on the bed Nora and I had shared for three years. Nora stood behind him, gently drying his damp hair with a towel, her movements delicate as if she was afraid to hurt him.

"I shouldn't have called you away when I knew it was your anniversary," Jake muttered, looking down, "You should go back and be with Wesley."

Even as the words left his mouth, he reached up and grabbed Nora's hand.

"It's just... Can you please not leave tonight?" he whispered, "Every time I think about you going back to him, the engagement party feels like a fever dream."

Nora went silent for a moment, then squeezed his fingers back. "That night wasn't an act. Since we already crossed that line, I’m not going to treat you like a borrowed boyfriend anymore."

Jake’s eyes turned red. "Then what about Wesley?"

Nora didn't answer for a long time. Finally, a heavy sigh escaped her lips. "Wesley is stronger than you are. He'll understand."

Just because I was stronger meant that the main bedroom belonged to Jake, our fifth anniversary belonged to Jake, and even the girl I had loved for five years could be handed over to Jake first.

Jake didn't tell her to leave again.

I didn't push the door open.

I walked back into the guest room, opened my laptop, and signed the final electronic contract for the three-year assignment. Then I opened my profile settings and completely erased both Nora and Jake from my emergency contacts.

While they were busy pushing me out of our bedroom, I began quietly packing myself out of their lives.

A week before my wedding, Jake came to see me.He looked far more haggard than he had three years ago. The custom ring Nora had made for him was no longer on his ring finger. He sat across from me, remaining silent for a long time. "Are you feeling pretty proud of yourself?" he said, "Nora didn't marry me. I lost my job, my friends—everyone treats me like a backstabbing snake."I looked at him calmly. "I didn't do any of that to you. You brought every bit of it on yourself."Jake's eyes turned red. "But if you hadn't handed her over to me at that engagement party, none of this would’ve happened!"Even now, he still convinced himself that I was the one at fault."I asked her to play a role for one evening," I said softly, "Did I ask you to wear my pajamas? To sleep in my bed? To hijack my wedding venue? You didn't betray me because I gave you an opportunity, Jake. You were just looking for an excuse you could use to justify it to yourself."His lips trembled. After a painfully lo

When my three-year placement wrapped up, the project I led took home the top honor in the industry. The celebration gala was set to take place back in my old city.My initial reaction was to refuse to go.Claire shut that down real quick. "You poured three years of your life into this result," she told me, "Don't go throwing away your own moment of glory just because of people who aren't worth the trouble."I ended up boarding the flight back after all. When I walked out of the venue hall, Nora was waiting outside.I hadn't seen her in three years. She looked noticeably thinner, the old radiance and easy confidence had completely faded from her eyes. She held the key to our new apartment tightly in her hand."Wesley." Her voice trembled. "The place is fully furnished now. Everything is decorated exactly the way you used to like it. Jake never set foot inside."I stared at her, my expression completely blank. "And?"Her eyes welled up with tears. "I haven't been with anyone fo

After the press conference, Jake moved back into the apartment. He set the custom ring down directly in front of Nora. "You promised you'd take responsibility for me," he said, his voice hard, "Everyone knows about us now. What right do you have to refuse to marry me?"Nora looked at him. "I said I'd take responsibility. That doesn't mean I love you."Jake burst into a bitter laugh. "You don't love me? Then why did you ditch Wesley to come running to me every single time? Why did you give me the passenger seat and the master bedroom? Why did you propose to me right in front of my parents, knowing damn well it was his wedding?"He stepped closer, his eyes intense. "Every time I reached out my hand, Nora, you chose me. Now that he dropped you, you're going to pin all the blame on me?" Nora couldn't choke out a single word in reply. It was because Jake was right. He had betrayed me, absolutely, but every single time, Nora was the one who voluntarily walked toward him.It wasn't lo

I thought moving across the country would put an end to everything, but the fallout from that livestream caught up to me in Chicago.Someone recognized me as the unhinged ex who maliciously slandered his best friend and harassed his girlfriend. Secretly recorded videos were leaked into our project group chat. Eventually, our corporate partners tactfully suggested replacing me as project lead.Claire placed a printed PR incident report on my desk. "Do you want the team to issue an official statement to clear your name?"I shook my head. "No. I'll handle it myself."Before, I chose not to defend myself because I was already planning my exit. Now, their lies were threatening my career and my livelihood. I was done taking the fall for them.I compiled every piece of evidence—five years of public social media records documenting my relationship with Nora, the full, unedited video footage from Jake’s engagement party, screenshots of Jake’s online forum post and his self-incriminating

The Chicago assignment was far more exhausting than I’d imagined. During my first week on-site, I barely got four hours of sleep each night. When Claire saw how ghastly pale I looked, she urged me to head to the infirmary.I shook my head. "I'm fine."The second the words left my mouth, the world went completely pitch black. When I woke up, I was lying on a hospital bed.A nurse stood over me with an intake form. "Why is your emergency contact line completely blank?"I stared at the empty space. It used to have Nora's name. Later, I added Jake's. One was the girl I loved for five years. The other was the best friend I trusted with my life.Yet when I actually collapsed, they were wrapped up in each other back in my master bedroom.I pulled my gaze away from the clipboard. "Just leave it empty."The nurse frowned, clearly disapproving.Claire stepped up and jotted her own cell number into the blank line. "For the duration of this assignment, I'm responsible for my team's well-

Early the next morning, my plane touched down in Chicago.Claire was waiting for me near baggage claim. She grabbed my rolling suitcase and gave me a warm smile. "Family didn't come to drop you off at the airport?"I paused, caught off guard for a second. Then I shook my head. "I don't have a family."My phone was buzzing nonstop in my pocket. Nora had been calling me from a dozen different burner numbers.I didn't answer a single one.Her latest text popped up on the screen: [Wesley, stop throwing a tantrum. I already sent Jake back home. We can talk about the wedding and work things out.]Even now, she still genuinely believed I was just having a petty breakdown. She thought I stormed off that night solely because I had to lend our wedding venue to Jake. She believed that as long as she came back, I would gladly put on a tux, put on the ring, and wait for her to walk down the aisle toward me again.I powered down my phone, popped out the SIM card, and switched to a new line.
