Love Was Yesterday

I started packing my stuff, and it took me until midnight before I was done. As I stared at the pile of luggage in the corner, my shoulders sagged. For seven years I had lived in this place. I thought this was my home.Whenever I bought anything, I never once considered whether it would be easy to carry away. The door swung open. I looked up. Zack strode in and gave me a tight hug. He smelled like alcohol. The corners of his eyes were red, and his voice was hoarse."You can't leave me, Jessica. We have so much history. Do you have no heart?"My hands hung by my sides. I did not pat his shoulder. I did not comfort him. With difficulty, I supported him and placed him on the bed. His phone kept ringing, and I took the call."I know how you feel about me, Zack, but I can't respond to your feelings. I'd love it if you could come to my wedding next month."When I saw the name on the screen, the phone slid out of my hand and fell to the ground with a crisp thud. "Jessie."That reminde

I made the call. Zack tried to snatch the phone from me, but I refused to let go. His face fell, and he grabbed my arm as he pried my fingers open. Then I felt a sharp, unnatural pain shoot through my hand.I looked down. My fingers hung limply, bent in a way they should not have been. 'Are they broken?' I wondered.Zack snatched my phone and roared as he slammed it into the ground. "That's what you get! Call her? I can't believe how evil you are. You think of everyone in the worst way! Are you trying to get her killed?"The breaking of my phone shook my heart, then I stepped back. This man was no lover of mine. He was a monster. The police officer noticed my hand and said sternly, "What are you doing, Zack? I can put you right back in that room, do you hear me?"Zack's voice was hoarse, and when he looked at me, there was only ice-cold hatred in his eyes.I asked myself how things turned out this way. It was different seven years ago. Back then, we lived in a basement. In wint

Zack stayed frozen on the couch for hours. He couldn't help but be reminded of the days when we first started dating. I was just still a young, naive girl back then, and I loved to hold his hand as I kept telling him to treat me well, or else.I looked at him with bright, sparkling eyes. At the time, he told himself he would spend his life treating me like a queen. He let out a sigh as he thought that perhaps he should compromise. Zack texted my best friend. "Jessica and I got into an argument. Tell her I'm sorry, and I'll plan the wedding as she likes. I'm doing it right this week. I want to say sorry to her. The wedding will be held at Porton Hotel at 9 a.m. a week later."Sylphy Sanderson, my best friend, didn't reply. However, Zack heaved a sigh of relief upon seeing that the message had been sent.He knew Sylphy and I were peas in the same pod. Anything she knew, I would find out soon enough. So, Zack started planning and preparing for the wedding. He mused and ruminated over

A week went by. It was already 7 a.m. when Zack arrived at Porton Hotel. He barely slept the night before. All he did was sit in the bedroom and go through the letters we'd written when we were still dating. There were 999 letters in total, and they were all kept in the box under the bed. After he went through the letters, a vat of numerous emotions swirled within his heart. He felt guilty for neglecting my feelings, so he planned on making it up during the wedding. He vowed that he would give me the most perfect wedding ever.Just then, the makeup artist called him, asking, "Is the bride not here yet, Mr. Chaucer? This is the latest we can go. Our schedule will be delayed if she doesn't show up now."Zack was worried, but he had to calm the makeup artist down. "Please give it some time."30 minutes went by, then an hour, and then two. Alas, I was nowhere to be seen. His friends and relatives were whispering among themselves. Zack's friends barged into the dressing room, looking

Zack smiled bitterly and wiped his tears away. He had lost the person who had loved him wholeheartedly. No one else would sacrifice seven years just to suffer with him. No one would wait for him until the dead of the night, reheating the hangover cure for him again and again, all so he could feel better after another wine-and-dine.No one would pat his back every time he was losing it, telling him she would be there forever. This was his reckoning.Three years had gone by before he heard about me again. He was on the brink of bankruptcy, and every day he had a mountain of things to settle. However, he would caress the ring on his ring finger whenever he felt like he was about to collapse from the strain. He opened up his socials and scrolled down. That was when a beautiful yet familiar face hit him. He froze as his eyes widened. He carefully observed the photo, looking at it over and over again before touching the screen with trembling fingers.I was in a wedding gown, and my han
