Chapter 2 Moving Out

Author: Spring Green Mountain
I started packing my stuff, and it took me until midnight before I was done. As I stared at the pile of luggage in the corner, my shoulders sagged. For seven years I had lived in this place. I thought this was my home.

Whenever I bought anything, I never once considered whether it would be easy to carry away.

The door swung open. I looked up. Zack strode in and gave me a tight hug. He smelled like alcohol. The corners of his eyes were red, and his voice was hoarse.

"You can't leave me, Jessica. We have so much history. Do you have no heart?"

My hands hung by my sides. I did not pat his shoulder. I did not comfort him.

With difficulty, I supported him and placed him on the bed. His phone kept ringing, and I took the call.

"I know how you feel about me, Zack, but I can't respond to your feelings. I'd love it if you could come to my wedding next month."

When I saw the name on the screen, the phone slid out of my hand and fell to the ground with a crisp thud. "Jessie."

That reminded me. Every time things became intimate between us, Zack would kiss my eyes and call my name with affection. But each time, it sounded less like Jessica and more like Jessie.

I thought that was just a mishearing. Now, I finally realised the truth. He had been trying to find the woman he loved through me.

I clenched my fists and held down the pain, then I took my phone. Just when I was about to call the movers, I saw Jessie's post.

It was a wall of text, and it talked about a boy who had taken care of her since she was a little girl. A boy who would do anything she asked. A boy who would never let her feel neglected.

I bit my lip and left a like on the post, but I felt tears welling up in my eyes. That man had never been willing to talk things through with me.

I looked up and heaved a long sigh, then I called the movers.

As the movers moved out all the familiar decor and fixtures, I felt my heart slowly hollowing out. I went back to the company's dormitories. When my colleague came out of their room and saw me standing across the corridor, they looked surprised.

"You actually moved back! They told me you were, but I thought they were joking. Your fiance treats you like a queen, and you're moving back? That means he'll be alone!"

I forced a smile. "You jest." I looked down at my wrinkled jacket and greasy hair. Maybe my colleague thought I was a poor girl who got kicked out and had nowhere to go.

I sat before my desk and texted my parents. "Dad, Mom. I'll take over management of the overseas branch."

I refused to go anywhere over the last few years because I wanted to be with Zack. Because of that, my relationship with my parents had grown strained.

Their reply came back fast. "Of course. We'll start the procedure right away. Your flight is in three days."

Late that night, I had already fallen asleep when my phone rang and woke me.

"Ms. Shayman? Your boyfriend got into a fight, and we need you to come over."

I held the phone tightly and answered softly, "Sorry, but he's my ex now. Please call someone else."

The officer sounded bemused. "But he told us to call you. He got into a fight for you. I think you should come over."

  • Love Was Yesterday   Chapter 10 Be Happy

Zack smiled bitterly and wiped his tears away. He had lost the person who had loved him wholeheartedly. No one else would sacrifice seven years just to suffer with him. No one would wait for him until the dead of the night, reheating the hangover cure for him again and again, all so he could feel better after another wine-and-dine.No one would pat his back every time he was losing it, telling him she would be there forever. This was his reckoning.Three years had gone by before he heard about me again. He was on the brink of bankruptcy, and every day he had a mountain of things to settle. However, he would caress the ring on his ring finger whenever he felt like he was about to collapse from the strain. He opened up his socials and scrolled down. That was when a beautiful yet familiar face hit him. He froze as his eyes widened. He carefully observed the photo, looking at it over and over again before touching the screen with trembling fingers.I was in a wedding gown, and my han

I frowned and tried to stop Sylphy. However, she shook her head. So, I kept quiet and let her do what she wanted. Sylphy then stepped forward, putting herself between Zack and me."You're a selfish man, Zach. You took the love and warmth from your partner for granted. As if that weren't bad enough, you get yourself entangled with another woman. You deserve to be punished! "What makes you think you should be forgiven just because you apologized? Don't flatter yourself!"Zack's face fell. He shoved Sylphy away and spoke with a trembling voice. "Come here, Jessica. I got you your favorite gown. I hired the makeup artist and cameraperson you like. It's our wedding today. Have you forgotten? "Come to me, and I'll pretend this never happened, alright?"I stared at Zack for a moment before letting out a scoff. "Sylphy's dead on about you, Zack. You really are selfish and think far too highly of yourself."Zack's heart trembled at my contempt. He couldn't understand how things had turn

  • Love Was Yesterday   Chapter 8 The Wedding

A week went by. It was already 7 a.m. when Zack arrived at Porton Hotel. He barely slept the night before. All he did was sit in the bedroom and go through the letters we'd written when we were still dating. There were 999 letters in total, and they were all kept in the box under the bed. After he went through the letters, a vat of numerous emotions swirled within his heart. He felt guilty for neglecting my feelings, so he planned on making it up during the wedding. He vowed that he would give me the most perfect wedding ever.Just then, the makeup artist called him, asking, "Is the bride not here yet, Mr. Chaucer? This is the latest we can go. Our schedule will be delayed if she doesn't show up now."Zack was worried, but he had to calm the makeup artist down. "Please give it some time."30 minutes went by, then an hour, and then two. Alas, I was nowhere to be seen. His friends and relatives were whispering among themselves. Zack's friends barged into the dressing room, looking

  • Love Was Yesterday   Chapter 7 Grandmother's Advice

Zack strode over and placed the present beside his grandmother. Then, he smiled and said, "Happy birthday, Grandma. Jessica and I prepared this for you."His grandmother pushed his hand away gently and sighed. "I don't want any presents. I just want to see Jessica. Your mother told me you two got into a fight?"Zack's smile froze. "Yes."His grandmother opened up the present, took out the pillow, and caressed it. "She made this, didn't she?""Yes.""She's very thoughtful. I told her I hadn't been sleeping well, so she told me she'd make me a pillow infused with herbs that help with my problem." She coughed.Zack quickly patted her back, but she waved him away. "It's about Jessie again, isn't it?"Zack looked away. "Yes."His grandmother sighed again and shook her head in disappointment. "This isn't right, Zack. You're going to marry Jessica very soon. You'll be husband and wife. You can't stay entangled with Jessie."Something squeezed Zack's heart as he tried to explain, "Jes

  • Love Was Yesterday   Chapter 6 The Birthday

Zack stayed frozen on the couch for hours. He couldn't help but be reminded of the days when we first started dating. I was just still a young, naive girl back then, and I loved to hold his hand as I kept telling him to treat me well, or else.I looked at him with bright, sparkling eyes. At the time, he told himself he would spend his life treating me like a queen. He let out a sigh as he thought that perhaps he should compromise. Zack texted my best friend. "Jessica and I got into an argument. Tell her I'm sorry, and I'll plan the wedding as she likes. I'm doing it right this week. I want to say sorry to her. The wedding will be held at Porton Hotel at 9 a.m. a week later."Sylphy Sanderson, my best friend, didn't reply. However, Zack heaved a sigh of relief upon seeing that the message had been sent.He knew Sylphy and I were peas in the same pod. Anything she knew, I would find out soon enough. So, Zack started planning and preparing for the wedding. He mused and ruminated over

  • Love Was Yesterday   Chapter 5 Canceled Photos

Zack froze for a moment, then he sneered. "She wouldn't. She's probably throwing a tantrum. She'll be fine once she gets over it."He looked at Jessie, and his gaze softened. "I'll get you a place to stay for the time being."The edges of Jessie's eyes went red. "If she's not around, can I move in with you? I just broke up with Felix. Living alone is scary."Zack, however, refused without thinking. "No. I'm getting married soon. She'll be mad if she finds out." Then he froze. He clearly had not expected himself to say that.Jessie bit her lip but went with the arrangement anyway. After sending her away, Zack returned home. "I'm back, Jessica!"There was no response. Only then did he remember that I had already moved out after our fight. Frustration welled within his heart, and he sat on the couch.Just then, his phone rang. It was his mother. "Your grandmother's seventieth birthday is in two days, boy. Remember to bring Jessica over for dinner."Zack fell silent for a moment.
