Chapter 4 Change the Lock

Author: Spring Green Mountain
I made the call. Zack tried to snatch the phone from me, but I refused to let go.

His face fell, and he grabbed my arm as he pried my fingers open. Then I felt a sharp, unnatural pain shoot through my hand.

I looked down. My fingers hung limply, bent in a way they should not have been. 'Are they broken?' I wondered.

Zack snatched my phone and roared as he slammed it into the ground. "That's what you get! Call her? I can't believe how evil you are. You think of everyone in the worst way! Are you trying to get her killed?"

The breaking of my phone shook my heart, then I stepped back. This man was no lover of mine. He was a monster.

The police officer noticed my hand and said sternly, "What are you doing, Zack? I can put you right back in that room, do you hear me?"

Zack's voice was hoarse, and when he looked at me, there was only ice-cold hatred in his eyes.

I asked myself how things turned out this way. It was different seven years ago. Back then, we lived in a basement. In winter, we could not afford the heater, so we held each other for warmth at night.

Whenever my feet were freezing, he would sit up, rub his hands together until they were warm, then cup my feet in his palms to warm them.

After I fell sick, I was treated to the most sumptuous meal we had in months. I knew we had no money, and I looked at his pale face, the needle marks he tried to hide.

He sold his blood just so I could have something healthy to eat. I wondered if even that had been fake.

Someone hurried toward us with an umbrella. When she came close enough, I realised it was Jessie.

She quickly held the umbrella over Zack's head, looking worried and full of guilt. At least, that was how she wanted to appear.

"Don't fight over me, Zack. I know it's all my fault, but you shouldn't be risking yourself. I'm really sorry. You wouldn't have fought with Felix if it weren't for me."

So he had done it for her. Zack noticed that she was standing on tiptoe and immediately grew concerned. He took the umbrella from her. "I'll hold it, and don't beat yourself up. We didn't fight because of you."

I saw the concern in his eyes and gave a self-mocking smile. Then I walked over to the police officer and asked for an umbrella.

He frowned at my left hand. "We can give you a ride to the hospital."

I looked down. The pain was almost unbearable. Still, I shook my head and smiled. "No, thank you."

I went to the hospital by myself. After that, I bought a new phone, called my property manager, and listed my house for rent. "But someone's living there. Stubborn person. Might need your help."

"Leave it to us, Ms. Shayman."

The property manager brought his team over, opened the lock, and cleared everything out of the house.

Zack called me not long after. I hung up right away and blocked him everywhere. I refused to leave even a single thread of connection between us.

When Zack sent Jessica home, he noticed all her stuff was tossed out, and the lock was changed. He grabbed the property manager, who was showing the house to potential tenants.

"What is the meaning of this?"

The manager frowned. "So you're the squatter Ms. Shayman told me about. Honestly, do you know no shame? She let you stay for seven whole years for free. You should be thanking her. Instead, you're refusing to leave?"

Zack's face fell. He said coldly, "I want Jessica to tell me that herself."

The manager looked like they'd heard the best joke ever. "I'm afraid she doesn't have the time. She's already on a flight overseas. The lady's busy taking over her family business. She certainly doesn't have time for you."

Jessie's eyes went wide. "She went overseas? But your wedding is next week!"

Zack smiled bitterly and wiped his tears away. He had lost the person who had loved him wholeheartedly. No one else would sacrifice seven years just to suffer with him. No one would wait for him until the dead of the night, reheating the hangover cure for him again and again, all so he could feel better after another wine-and-dine.No one would pat his back every time he was losing it, telling him she would be there forever. This was his reckoning.Three years had gone by before he heard about me again. He was on the brink of bankruptcy, and every day he had a mountain of things to settle. However, he would caress the ring on his ring finger whenever he felt like he was about to collapse from the strain. He opened up his socials and scrolled down. That was when a beautiful yet familiar face hit him. He froze as his eyes widened. He carefully observed the photo, looking at it over and over again before touching the screen with trembling fingers.I was in a wedding gown, and my han

I frowned and tried to stop Sylphy. However, she shook her head. So, I kept quiet and let her do what she wanted. Sylphy then stepped forward, putting herself between Zack and me."You're a selfish man, Zach. You took the love and warmth from your partner for granted. As if that weren't bad enough, you get yourself entangled with another woman. You deserve to be punished! "What makes you think you should be forgiven just because you apologized? Don't flatter yourself!"Zack's face fell. He shoved Sylphy away and spoke with a trembling voice. "Come here, Jessica. I got you your favorite gown. I hired the makeup artist and cameraperson you like. It's our wedding today. Have you forgotten? "Come to me, and I'll pretend this never happened, alright?"I stared at Zack for a moment before letting out a scoff. "Sylphy's dead on about you, Zack. You really are selfish and think far too highly of yourself."Zack's heart trembled at my contempt. He couldn't understand how things had turn

A week went by. It was already 7 a.m. when Zack arrived at Porton Hotel. He barely slept the night before. All he did was sit in the bedroom and go through the letters we'd written when we were still dating. There were 999 letters in total, and they were all kept in the box under the bed. After he went through the letters, a vat of numerous emotions swirled within his heart. He felt guilty for neglecting my feelings, so he planned on making it up during the wedding. He vowed that he would give me the most perfect wedding ever.Just then, the makeup artist called him, asking, "Is the bride not here yet, Mr. Chaucer? This is the latest we can go. Our schedule will be delayed if she doesn't show up now."Zack was worried, but he had to calm the makeup artist down. "Please give it some time."30 minutes went by, then an hour, and then two. Alas, I was nowhere to be seen. His friends and relatives were whispering among themselves. Zack's friends barged into the dressing room, looking

  • Love Was Yesterday   Chapter 7 Grandmother's Advice

Zack strode over and placed the present beside his grandmother. Then, he smiled and said, "Happy birthday, Grandma. Jessica and I prepared this for you."His grandmother pushed his hand away gently and sighed. "I don't want any presents. I just want to see Jessica. Your mother told me you two got into a fight?"Zack's smile froze. "Yes."His grandmother opened up the present, took out the pillow, and caressed it. "She made this, didn't she?""Yes.""She's very thoughtful. I told her I hadn't been sleeping well, so she told me she'd make me a pillow infused with herbs that help with my problem." She coughed.Zack quickly patted her back, but she waved him away. "It's about Jessie again, isn't it?"Zack looked away. "Yes."His grandmother sighed again and shook her head in disappointment. "This isn't right, Zack. You're going to marry Jessica very soon. You'll be husband and wife. You can't stay entangled with Jessie."Something squeezed Zack's heart as he tried to explain, "Jes

  • Love Was Yesterday   Chapter 6 The Birthday

Zack stayed frozen on the couch for hours. He couldn't help but be reminded of the days when we first started dating. I was just still a young, naive girl back then, and I loved to hold his hand as I kept telling him to treat me well, or else.I looked at him with bright, sparkling eyes. At the time, he told himself he would spend his life treating me like a queen. He let out a sigh as he thought that perhaps he should compromise. Zack texted my best friend. "Jessica and I got into an argument. Tell her I'm sorry, and I'll plan the wedding as she likes. I'm doing it right this week. I want to say sorry to her. The wedding will be held at Porton Hotel at 9 a.m. a week later."Sylphy Sanderson, my best friend, didn't reply. However, Zack heaved a sigh of relief upon seeing that the message had been sent.He knew Sylphy and I were peas in the same pod. Anything she knew, I would find out soon enough. So, Zack started planning and preparing for the wedding. He mused and ruminated over

Zack froze for a moment, then he sneered. "She wouldn't. She's probably throwing a tantrum. She'll be fine once she gets over it."He looked at Jessie, and his gaze softened. "I'll get you a place to stay for the time being."The edges of Jessie's eyes went red. "If she's not around, can I move in with you? I just broke up with Felix. Living alone is scary."Zack, however, refused without thinking. "No. I'm getting married soon. She'll be mad if she finds out." Then he froze. He clearly had not expected himself to say that.Jessie bit her lip but went with the arrangement anyway. After sending her away, Zack returned home. "I'm back, Jessica!"There was no response. Only then did he remember that I had already moved out after our fight. Frustration welled within his heart, and he sat on the couch.Just then, his phone rang. It was his mother. "Your grandmother's seventieth birthday is in two days, boy. Remember to bring Jessica over for dinner."Zack fell silent for a moment.
