Chapter 2

Author: Mohini
I calmly reached up and wiped my nose. My face deathly pale, I let out a small laugh and shook my head.

Two years ago at the underground casino, I'd taken eight punches in a row and blacked out right after.

The casino owner kicked me awake and told me, "The doctor says you've got cancer. It can't be cured.

"Before you die, hurry up and start drinking with the clients and sleeping with them. At least you can make me a little more money."

I was sent to other casino owners' beds. When I got pregnant, I went back to taking punches until I miscarried, then spent the money I earned on painkillers.

The last of it would probably go toward a coffin.

I quickly wiped away the blood, held out my clean hand, and put on a practiced smile. "It's thirty dollars for the beer. How would you like to pay?"

Felix stared at the wretched state I was in, his fist clenching tighter and tighter.

"What on earth are you..."

"Maybe Avery is still mad at us?" Riley said, sounding guilty.

She tapped her card to pay the thirty dollars, then took my hand.

"Come home with us, Avery. We have plenty of money at home."

But even as her lips curved into a sweet smile, she secretly pinched me hard.

I instinctively pushed her away, and Felix quickly stepped in between us. "If you've got a problem, take it out on me. Leave her alone."

Mom and my best friend were eyeing me warily too, as if I were some kind of dangerous menace.

For a moment, I just stood there, stunned. Then I put away my card reader, turned, and walked out of the private room.

Behind me, Felix roared hysterically, "You're really not coming home? Then don't ever come back!"

I didn't look back.

The doctor had said I only had a week left. I could survive anywhere for that long.

The next day, I showed up for work as usual, but the manager blocked me at the door. "Starting tomorrow, you don't need to come in. Mr. Skye paid your termination fee and ordered us not to keep you on."

The manager blew out a smoke ring. "Did you cross Mr. Skye or something? He seems to really hate you. If you ask me, you'd better find yourself somewhere to wait out your last days."

I clung to the hem of his shirt, my voice climbing several notches. "You can't fire me! I still need money to buy my coffin. At least pay me the wages you owe me!"

The next second, he kicked me away. "Got hooked on selling drinks, did you? Go drop dead wherever you like!"

At his command, I was thrown out of the nightclub.

In a daze, I made my way back to my basement rental, only to find my belongings scattered across the ground outside the door.

The landlord blocked the doorway, looking at me like I was carrying the plague. "Get the hell out of here! Don't go bringing trouble to my door!"

My withered hand clutched the last of my medicine.

I didn't know what kind of trouble someone like me could possibly bring them.

I looked up and saw an announcement for Felix and Riley's wedding playing on the giant screen.

Around me, passersby squealed in wild excitement.

"Felix Skye bought his fiancée a three-million-dollar wedding dress. That's so romantic!

"I can't wait for their wedding of the century! I heard they're spending thirty million on it. Just getting a glimpse feels like a win. Riley Mackenzie is so lucky!"

...

I dug through my pockets for change. All I had left was three dollars and sixty cents.

It wasn't even enough for the cheapest bottle of painkillers.

Just then, a message from the coffin seller popped up on my phone: [Taking forever just to buy a coffin? If you can't afford to die, then don't! Settle the balance now!]

I still owed him fifty-three dollars.

Through all the agony of my illness, I had never let out a single sob. But seeing that extravagant wedding announcement on the giant screen, I couldn't hold back the bitter tears any longer.

With trembling hands, I dialed Felix's number. "Why did you have them throw me out?"

I never expected to hear things being smashed on the other end of the line. Felix was practically falling apart as he yelled at me, "I told you to take it out on me! You deliberately played the victim and got Riley branded a homewrecker. Are you happy now?"

"Avery, honey, it's Mom."How are you doing now? Even if it costs me everything I have, I'll pay for your treatment. Just come home, okay?"My mother was sobbing uncontrollably. I had never heard her sound so heartbroken. But now, I no longer needed concern that came this late. "I'm doing fine now. Thanks for your concern."Hearing how distant I sounded, she paused on the other end of the line, then choked up even more. "Sweetheart, do you really have to talk to your own mother like this?"Before she'd even finished, Riley snatched the phone away. "Avery, Mom aged ten years overnight. I don't care how selfish you are, you can't just stand by and watch her worry herself sick over you. How could you do this to her?"I just smiled to myself. After everything I'd been through all these years, I had never wronged anyone. On the other end of the line, Riley sobbed, "Felix still hasn't woken up. He got into that accident because he was out looking for you. Are you trying to destroy

The moment I knocked on Frances's door, I'd already prepared myself for the worst. All I was doing was trading my body for some money so I could give myself the most dignified ending possible. It wasn't as if it were the first time.Out of habit, I took off my coat, unbuttoned my shirt, and sat down on the luxurious bed.Frances watched from nearby with his arms crossed, clearly amused. "You sure about this?"I closed my eyes for a moment and nodded. The next second, he caught my hand and buttoned my shirt back up for me, one button at a time. "If you need money, just tell me. Don't do this again."For a moment, I was dazed. Tears suddenly spilled from my eyes. "Why are you helping me?"Frances sat down lazily beside me and chuckled. "You have a pretty bad memory, huh?"I froze, as if I'd been carried back two years. When I'd had nowhere else to turn, I walked into the underground casino alone, looking for a job to earn money.Back then, Frances had been surrounded by beauti

The moment Felix saw Frances, he gripped the door so hard the veins stood out on his forehead. "Where's Avery?"One thing was certain. Avery's location was pinging from this very room.Frances blocked the doorway completely, looking utterly carefree. "Isn't she your wife? Why come looking for her in my room?"The one in my bed is my new plaything, a model who just made her debut. Want to join in?"Felix glared at him and pulled up the location tracker to show him. "The system says Avery is right here. Hand her over now. If you dare lay a finger on her, I'll take you down with me."Just as he was about to explode, a curvy model stepped out of the room, her hair still wet. "Well, Mr. Skye, what brings you here? Want to join us?"At the sight of her, the weight finally lifted from Felix's chest. He slammed the door shut and stormed off.For a moment, he didn't know whether to feel relieved or frustrated.Felix drove to the underground casino and had someone bring the owner to him

[So Avery Schotz really is the homewrecker? She played the victim so convincingly. She totally took advantage of everyone's kindness!][And her sister was even sticking up for her. A woman with no morals like that is disgusting!]The computer screen was filled with nothing but negative comments about Avery.Felix couldn't stand to read any more. He shut the laptop and pinched the bridge of his nose.Beside him, Ivy sighed. "It's strange. She always used to be so headstrong. Why did she agree so easily to call herself the homewrecker this time?"And all for just over thirty thousand? In the past, she wouldn't have given that kind of money a second glance."Felix couldn't help wondering the same thing. But he shook his head, trying to shake off his unease. "Mom, maybe she's really learned her lesson and is willing to accept what Riley and I have."He stared blankly at the flames in the fireplace, his thoughts drifting back to three years ago.One night, while drunk, he'd mistak

The moment the livestream started, the live comments filled with people standing up for me, all calling Riley a homewrecker who'd stolen her way into her position. The last trace of pity for me vanished from Felix's eyes. He handed me a slip of paper and told me to read from it.[I'm sorry, everyone. My sister is Felix Skye's real wife. I've just been playing the victim for sympathy because I wanted to take her place.]Riley put on a show of kindness. "Avery, if you're scared, you don't have to clear things up. I'll take the blame."The corner of my mouth twitched, and I pushed her away. Then, with everyone watching, I read the note out word by word.I knocked my forehead against the floor in front of the camera, again and again. "I'm the homewrecker. I'm sorry..."Public opinion flipped in an instant. The insults came pouring in.[And to think we stuck up for you! Did your conscience go to the dogs?][A homewrecker who isn't even ashamed of it. So trashy!][How could you do

Felix yelled, "What did I ever do to deserve this kind of torment from you? Until Riley's back to normal, don't even think about earning a single cent!"I meant to explain that I hadn't been targeting Riley. But before I could, a black van pulled up in front of me. The thugs from the underground casino climbed out and closed in on me, clubs in hand."Can't earn money, and all you do is cause trouble? All I had you do was sell drinks, and you still managed to get yourself thrown out! What, you want to go back to taking punches and sleeping with clients?"You owe the casino thirty thousand in breach-of-contract fees. Pay up now!"The color drained from my face. "I really don't have any money..."What I got in return was a storm of punches and kicks.I knew all too well how a club felt landing on my body. So why did it hurt so much more this time? When I opened my eyes again, I was back in the home I'd longed for day and night, as luxurious and cozy as ever.Suddenly, my mother's
