Chapter 3

Author: Anonymous
As I came to my senses, I suddenly realized Claire had turned and spotted me.

"What are you doing here?" she demanded right then.

I kept my head down as I answered, "Just picking up some groceries—I'm leaving now, I didn't know you were here."

Claire frowned and snapped, "Did I tell you to leave?"

Beside her, Stan chuckled as he squeezed Claire's hand, "Thanks for sparring with me, Oliver—I really don't know what to do without you… Oh, you should join us later, my match is soon. I mean, we're family, aren't we?"

Claire's lips curled into a smile in turn. "Oh, you're too sweet for your own good, Stan. But sure—we will be there to cheer for you!"

I knew I had no right to refuse, so I simply followed.

We arrived at the locker room together, where Stan opened his locker in front of us, showing us the tailor-made boxing gear that Claire had gotten him, and women's underwear.

Stan scrambled to shove it in a black bag, while Claire pouted as she gave him a playful punch on the chest.

Just from their body language, anyone could tell right away what they had been up to in that very room.

Still, Claire was soon taken aback as she saw that I wasn't reacting at all, and was somehow annoyed before she knew it.

"Stop being so distracted," she scoffed. "It's like you have someone else on your mind. Who was it? And I've been meaning to ask for a while—is that colleague who kept texting you a man or a woman?"

I slid my phone back in my pocket to stop her from snatching it away again. "It's my boss. I've been gone for days after all—work piled up and there's things he'd need to know."

Claire was clearly skeptical, but the bell rang, signalling the start of Stan's match.

She brushed past me, muttering, "I'm checking your phone when you get back."

I grunted nonchalantly in reply. I'd be gone by then anyway.

It was a full house, with Claire taking a front row seat while I sat far behind on the bleachers, though that suited me just fine—I could slip out whenever I wanted.

As it turned out, Stan's opponent really had a physique that was no different from mine.

And if I was seeing it right, Stan was fighting him just like how he had fought me.

During one of the intervals, Claire came up to me and demanded, "Go help Stan. I need to take a call."

As I went over to Stan with a towel, he flashed a mocking grin, "You really are Claire's lapdog, still sticking around after all that abuse. Or perhaps you find it exciting watching us kiss?"

I flung the towel on his face right then, but he didn't have time to snap at me since it was time to return to the ring.

After the match ended, he sent Claire away with some excuse, and dragged me to the locker room for a private talk.

As soon as the door shut, he cracked his neck and swung his fist at me, but I caught his wrist and shoved him against the wall, snorting, "Can't we just all get along? Why do you insist on starting fights?"

In reality, I had trained a little myself, and definitely stood a chance as he was already exhausted.

Still, Stan struggled against my grip, snorting as his eyes flashed violently, "Because I can't stand how Claire keeps looking at you! We've even registered our marriage, but she still keeps you around. Can't you just know your place and leave?! What's the point of hanging around as a boy toy?"

I was planning to pick up my luggage from the house and didn't really have time for his crap, but he insists on keep running his mouth.

"Did you know why she suddenly announced our marriage? When was it supposed to be her eighth anniversary with you?

"Because she's pregnant with my child! And it's been two months, while you never even got in bed with her!

"Why else is she so eager to get registered? She can't very well explain how she got pregnant, can she?"

"How does it feel being made a cuckold, huh?"

As his grin broadened, I started strangling him in frustration, "Shut up!"

"Sure, whatever you say!" He scoffed, and suddenly picked up a spray can.

As I watched him spray something white at my face, I immediately realized it was dangerous and clasped a hand over my nose and mouth with one hand, while snatching the can and hitting him in the head.

Whatever it was, he inhaled a lot of it and passed out.

I soon heard a rush of footsteps and Claire shouting, "Stan?! Oliver?"

I broke up into a run, taking a different hallway and still in a daze as I rushed home, picked up my luggage and rushed to the train station.

Claire had been texting me persistently even as I boarded.

[I don't have time for your childish games! Come back and apologize! And get a checkup after!]

I look out the window, snorting.

I then changed my SIM card and blocked her on all my social media accounts.

After all, I would never see Claire Young again.

After that day, I put my mind and spirit into the research of new elements. One day, my young assistant was pointing at the screen as he cried excitedly, "The new flight data is simply… beautiful!"Bill heard and came running, though he waited to study the data before flashing a rare grin, "The arrangement works, Mr. Cross! I shall report this development to the higher-ups tomorrow!"Even the cafeteria helper went out of his way to provide seconds, nodding as he smiled, "The nation is proud to have geniuses like y'all."When I returned to the dorms later, I could only lay in bed, too excited to sleep. It had been so long since I felt approved and acknowledged. In the eight years I had spent by Claire's side, it was as if the only purpose of my existence was meant to satisfy her demands, while my accomplishments always went unseen. That was when my phone screen glowed as I received a text. I stiffened, but soon started to pry her hands off me. "This is a military base, Claire Young. Show some respect."As I looked around, I was left speechless as the patrol officers had all turned to keep their backs to us, working on various things. However, I knew for a fact that they were all listening to this conversation. Was it too much to ask to help keep her away from me?"Please calm down," I said when I finally pulled Claire's hands off me and took a step back. "We have nothing to do with each other now.""Please, you don't understand!" she cried, shaking her disheveled head. "I made a mistake—I know that now. When I got home and saw that you already left with all your belongings, I came to understand—""What did you understand?" I asked, cutting him short. "Why did I really leave this time?"Claire paused, shuddering as she said, "It's over between me and Stan Gosling. I didn't keep his baby either… So can't we just start over? I promised I won't ever hurt you anymore

Meanwhile, it had been a long train ride for me.When I arrived, I saw several men waiting, each wearing a familiar uniform, with one holding up a board with my name written on it.They must be the local garrison, and they were all smiles as I approached."Over here, Mr. Cross!" One of them stepped up, shaking my hand. "It must have been a tiring journey. Come on—let's get you to our dorms first."I nodded. "Thank you."After we arrived at base, a middle-aged man wearing shades approached us, nodding at me."Oliver Cross, I presume?" He asked. "I'm Bill Tyson, the professor in charge of this project—specifically, ballistics."I shook his hand. "Pleased to meet you, Professor Tyson."The professor beamed. "Well, I've read through your resume—the new aircraft model you designed was really impressive. We're really lucky you finally decided to join us after we asked for so long! There's a forum in a couple hours too. Please join us!"I attended the forum, meeting several other res

The first few scenes were actually fine, as it was just the photos Stan and Claire didn't mind sharing on social media.Things just started to get freaky soon after, as the video and photos were captured from strange angles—clearly taken in secret.Everything showed how Claire repeatedly abused Oliver, while playing along with all of Stan's whims.Naturally, there was also incriminating evidence against Stan, including everything he had told Oliver in the locker room to rile him up.Stan's face paled, and he promptly rushed up and bellowed at the waiter, "Turn it off!"The waiter shook his head, terrified, "The LED screen is set to loop videos, unless you play a new video.""Then do it!" Stan bellowed. The waiter nodded, and clicked on another video in the USB stick—but it was a video of Stan doing the deed with Claire in the living room. The banquet hall erupted into chaos, with parents scrambling to cover their children's eyes, while Stan finally had enough and smashed the sc

Stan's birthday party the next day was indeed impressive. As everyone watched Stan and Claire make their grand entrance, those who didn't know better would think that they were getting married.Claire's parents—who were unaware that Stan and Claire had already registered their marriage, even smiled and teased Claire, "Oh, darling… Aren't you worried Oliver would get jealous when he arrives?""Exactly. Men can be worse than us women when they really get upset!"Claire was afraid to even answer, but Stan simply gave her hand a squeeze.Still holding her hand, he raised their hands up in the air to show everyone as he said, "Actually, Claire has broken up with Oliver. And we already registered our marriage."Claire stayed silent, afraid to so much as look at her parents, who were left dumbfounded for a long while. After all, they liked Oliver, and considered Stan a good-for-nothing—he had always skipped school, and refused his own parents' offer to send him abroad for further stud

Later at night, an enfeebled Stan finally opened his eyes at the hospital and rasped, "Claire…"Claire walked up, grasping his hand and asked in concern. "How are you feeling? Does it hurt anywhere?"He smiled, shaking his head and breathed tenderly, "I'm fine—I'm worried about you. Aren't you tired, traveling all this way? Is the baby alright?""We're both fine," Claire replied, and remembered Oliver just then. She was aware that Stan had called Oliver to the locker room, but by the time she arrived, Oliver was gone, while Stan lay unconscious in the locker room, his forehead bleeding. And ever since then, Oliver never replied to any of her texts.Considering how he would reply to her texts immediately before, but was now basically gone without a trace, Claire became all the more frustrated. She decided she had really spoiled Oliver too much, or he wouldn't have the audacity to test her patience like this. When she saw him again, she would give him a lesson to remember!-Af
