Chapter 6 He Wanted to Torture Her

When Damien saw Clarissa standing at the door, he knew she had regretted her choice.

He scorned her even more for playing hard to get. She had overestimated her capabilities.

Clarissa was well alert. After all, she was there to beg Damien. There was an inevitable hint of flattery in her voice.

“You’re early, President Lawrence.”

“Not as early as you.” After speaking, Damien opened the door and sat on his office chair. He turned on his computer and went through some documents.

“Do you have any business with me?” Damien asked Clarissa indifferently with a cold tone.

His voice was hoarse. Clarissa suddenly remembered that he did not have an umbrella when it rained heavily last night. So, she quickly asked, “Did you catch a cold, President Lawrence? Drink more water. Do you have any medicine?”

This could be a minor or severe matter. One time, Clarissa’s father worked extra hours in the rain on the construction site and was bedridden for a few days.

“Get to the point.” There was a slight annoyance in Damien’s voice.

Clarissa’s concern sounded insincere to him.

Clarissa bit the bullet and asked, “President Lawrence, is your offer from yesterday still available?”

“What?” Damien did not even raise his head.

Clarissa thought, ‘Is he pretending? Or did he really forget?’

She raised her voice, “It’s about your marriage proposal.” Her tone was a little shaky.

Damien looked as if he had just understood her words. “Oh, that? What about it?”

Clarissa had expected Damien to act this way. Once she began begging him, he would put on airs.

Despite that, she had no choice. After all, she had lost the upper hand. At the moment, she was at his mercy.

“Do you still need someone to marry?” Clarissa tried to sound as if she was flattering him.

Damien could sense it.

“Yes.”

He lit a cigarette and sat on his office chair calmly while staring at Clarissa.

“I didn’t think it through yesterday. After more consideration, it’s actually doable.”

Clarissa tried to hide her embarrassment.

In Damien’s eyes, her attitude seemed pretentious.

“It’s true that I need someone to marry, but what if I told you I’ve already found someone to fill in the shoes?” Damien retaliated.

“Huh?” Clarissa’s gaze turned impatient. She immediately began thinking of other ways to obtain money since the plan involving Damien failed.

Looking at Clarissa, Damien thought, ‘This woman thought that she could frolic with an eagle but in the end, she became the eagle’s prey.’

Originally, Clarissa appeared to be a person who could stand her ground. As it turned out, there was nothing much to her. She was already getting hasty.

“Why are you suddenly regretting your decision? Didn’t you mention that you already have a boyfriend?” Damien asked after a moment of silence.

“Yesterday, you said I could state any terms I wanted. I’m doing it for the money while you’re trying to reassure your grandfather. We’re simply reaping the benefits from this situation. I think that’s a sufficient reason.”

“Okay. You’re pretty straightforward.”

Damien’s lips twitched. He revealed a faint and ambiguous smile as he asked, “May I know why you need such a large sum of money? You’re still so young.”

Clarissa thought to herself for a moment. If she said her mother was seriously ill, Damien would find out she was taking frequent leaves. It may affect her chances of remaining in New East Corporation. Since she had already lied about having a boyfriend, she might as well roll with that instead.

“I’m sure you’re aware the property prices in Genovia are extremely high. It’s about 60 to 70 thousand dollars for one square foot. My boyfriend and I can only afford a house if we don’t eat or drink for 200 years. Yesterday, he told me that he’s going to another place for an internship. I want to utilize this time to earn some extra money. It’ll be a surprise for him when he comes back.”

Clarissa was quite skilled in lying. She did not even look hesitant.

Damien continued asking, “Is he fine with what you’re doing?”

“Of course not. I plan to keep it a secret from him. He’ll never find out.”

“How much do you want?” Damien asked again coldly.

“How much can you give?” Clarissa looked as confident as ever.

Initially, Damien offered five million dollars. However, his impression of Clarissa had gotten worse than before. Hence, he did not want to let her have the money she desperately desired so easily. He wanted to torture her.

Damien said nonchalantly, “The base will be one million dollars. Also, there’ll be some specific terms. I’ll give you a written agreement in due time. There’ll be a performance evaluation on it. Anyway, earning five million dollars a year won’t be a problem if you’re with me. I’ll give you a house if you stay for two years.”

Clarissa was stunned. Five million dollars in a year? Was earning money that easy for Damien?

“Okay. Deal. Let’s exchange contacts. You can inform me if there are any problems.”
