We found Mom in the kitchen, setting plates on the table.

The house was open enough that you could see everything, the kitchen, living room, even the staircase leading upstairs.

Her face hadn’t changed a bit. If anything, she looked younger than the last time I saw her. God, I missed her. I missed my mom.

“Mom,” I whispered.

Even though it was soft, she froze. Slowly, she turned her head.

“Audrey,” she breathed, like she couldn’t believe it.

Did they really think I wouldn’t come?

I stood there frozen until I felt Jazper Ray’s hand at my waist, a silent nudge to go.

I walked over and hugged her tight. The second I touched her, I broke down, and so did she.

“Oh, darling,” she whispered, stroking my hair.

I buried my face on her shoulder. “Mom, I missed you so much,” I sobbed.

“I’m okay. It’s hard not having you, but I’m trying,” I choked out.
