Chapter 2

Zoey had no idea either.

Anne continued, “It wouldn’t be easy being the president’s wife. Imagine having to deal with so many other women throwing themselves at your man.”

Zoey agreed with that. It was certainly annoying being Laurence’s wife. Zoey and Laurence had been married for more than half a year.

Their story was a classic: they had sex and had the misfortune of getting caught by Laurence’s mother. At the time, she had come out of Laurence’s bedroom wearing his shirt, and his mother thought that she was his girlfriend. Laurence’s mother had been worried about her son’s marriage, so she invited Zoey to have dinner with his family.

At the same time, Laurence had had enough of his mother’s constant urging for him to get married and the endless blind dates she had set up for him. So he proposed a business marriage between them.

She needed the money, and he needed the marriage.

So they got married.

Laurence would pay her a sum of money as compensation and also pay for her mother’s hospital bills. On the other hand, she only needed to act like a good wife in front of his mother and promise never to fall in love with him.

Zoey knew that Laurence loved somebody else.

She had known that for a long time, but she tried to avoid the thought. Every time it came up, she felt like her heart was being squeezed.

She had witnessed Laurence’s youth when he had given that girl his whole heart.

“Miss Jenner, Mr. Scott asked you to bring him a cup of coffee.”

“Alright.”

Zoey went to the pantry and brewed a cup of coffee. Then, she brought it to Laurence’s office. Laurence was wearing a black button-downed shirt with the sleeves rolled up. When she entered, he glanced at her emotionlessly. Zoey placed the cup down. She wanted to tell him that she was pregnant, but the words got stuck in her throat.

Laurence raised an eyebrow and stared at her. “Anything else?”

Zoey swallowed. “No. I’ll leave now.”

Laurence acknowledged her reply with a quiet hum. He did not ask any further. That night after her shower, Zoey lay in bed, unable to sleep. Laurence had come in after midnight. He smelt faintly of smoke.

Slowly, he had taken off his shirt and went into the bathroom to take a shower. When he came out, his hair was still damp. He grabbed her waist and slipped his hand under her shirt. Zoey felt as if she was trapped under his spell when he lowered his head to kiss her.

Suddenly, she pushed him away. “I don’t want to do it tonight, Mr. Scott,” she said, flushed and breathing heavily.

Laurence smiled slightly. “You’re angry?” he asked thoughtfully.

Zoey shook her head. “No. I’m just not feeling well.”

She wasn’t sure if Laurence believed her or not, but she knew that he would not touch her tonight. Laurence would never force himself on anyone, and neither did he need to. He preferred a willing transaction on both sides.

Laurence stared at her for a moment before saying impassively, “Is it because of Yvette Sullivan?”

Zoey did not answer. Her pregnancy might have made her more temperamental as she did not feel like talking right now. She didn’t have the patience to put on an act. Laurence had no intention of explaining his relationship with Yvette to her. Even though he didn’t show it, he felt a little unhappy.

“Sleep well,” he said.

Zoey gripped the blanket tightly and stopped him as he was about to leave. “Last night, I dreamed that I was pregnant. What if I really became pregnant?”

Laurence paused and turned toward her. His eyes were cold and distant. “I hope you haven’t forgotten our marriage agreement.”
