Chapter 6

Anne leaned close to Zoey’s ear and whispered, “I heard that Mr. Scott’s crush came back from abroad, but she’s sick.”

Zoey was taken aback. She hadn’t heard anything about Sarah coming back. However, it was true that Sarah was sickly. Zoey did not like Sarah. She didn’t like Sarah’s mother either. The both of them had stayed in her mother’s house previously. It was Sarah’s mother who had caused Zoey’s mother to commit suicide. Death would’ve been an easy way out, but there were worse fates than death.

Zoey had given it some thought before. If she had been cheated out of her entire life savings by the man she thought she loved and had to endure her husband’s mistress’ bullying in her own house, she would probably kill herself too.

Therefore, she was cold when she answered, “I see.”

That night, Zoey had to accompany Laurence to a charity banquet. In the car, she could tell that Laurence was in a bad mood. He was cold and distant. Zoey only remembered her condition when they were about to arrive at the hotel. “Oh, by the way, is it okay if I don’t drink tonight?”

Whether she could give birth to the child was something to worry about later. Right now, she had to protect her child.

Laurence looked at her impassively. “Miss Scott, I didn’t invite you here just to be pretty.” His dark mood made him more ruthless than usual.

Zoey pursed her lips. “I’m not feeling well lately. The doctor told me to cut down on alcohol.”

Laurence never showed his anger if he could avoid it. He would never let his emotions get the better of him.

He said coldly, “I’ve seen your medical report. You’re perfectly fine.”

The car stopped at the entrance of the hotel.

Laurence did not get out of the car. He reached out suddenly and grabbed Zoey by the chin. “Or is it because I’m not paying you enough? Is ten thousand dollars a month not enough for you to have a couple of drinks with me?”

His grip hurt Zoey. This was one of the rare moments when he lost control of his temper. Zoey could imagine why. Maybe Sarah’s health had deteriorated again, and he was shifting his anger to her.

Ignoring the pain, she said, “No, that’s not it.”

Laurence looked into her teary eyes. “If that’s so, then stop pretending to puke and avoid alcohol as if you’re pregnant.”

Zoey blanched. “I’m not pregnant,” she replied on instinct.

“I believe you. You’re honest, and you won’t break my rules,” Laurence said.

Zoey bit her lip. “Yes.”

When they got out of the car, Zoey hooked her arm through Laurence’s. The people attending the banquet were mostly rich businessmen or powerful elites. As for Laurence, he was both. He was rich and powerful, and many people were here to kiss his ass. Zoey’s marriage to Laurence had never been made public.

Therefore, no one at the banquet knew that she was his wife. They only took her as his secretary whom he was sleeping with. It wouldn’t take more than a few months for him to get bored of her, and then his partner would change again. Zoey knew as well as they did that Laurence did not care about her.

At the banquet, one of Laurence’s friends asked about her again. “Someone told me that your pretty secretary is also your wife. Is that true?”

After a few seconds of silence, Laurence said nonchalantly, “I’m just her patron.”

Zoey could hear his reply clearly. Tristan Gray smiled as he stared at Zoey.

“If that’s so, then you wouldn’t mind if I borrow her for a few days, would you, Mr. Scott?”
