ログイン( Robert POV) I stood in the driveway watching Mia's taillights disappear down the road. My feet were bare against cold concrete. I didn't remember coming outside without shoes. Didn't remember half of what had just happened. Just knew that everything was falling apart faster than I could stop it. "Mr. Robert." Mrs. Cara stood in the doorway. "You should come inside." "She's gone." "I know." "She thinks I betrayed her." "I know that too." Mrs. Cara's voice was gentle. "Come inside before you catch cold." I went inside because there was nothing else to do. Standing in the driveway wouldn't bring Mia back. Nothing would bring her back except truth, and I didn't even know what the truth was anymore. The bedroom still reeked of Sophia's perfume. Thick and cloying. Making my stomach turn. I stripped the sheets. Threw them in the hallway. Opened every window despite the cold morning air. My head pounded. Remnants of too much alcohol and too little sleep. Or maybe something else.
( Mia POV)Nel fell asleep halfway through the story about dragons.I closed the book gently, tucking the blanket around his small body. He looked peaceful. Innocent. Unaware of how his guardians were destroying themselves."Sweet dreams," I whispered, pressing a kiss to his forehead. My phone buzzed as I left his room. My assistant. Calling at nine PM, which meant something was wrong."Miss Cops? I'm so sorry to bother you. But we have a situation with the Tokyo investors. They're threatening to pull out unless we can address their concerns tonight.""Tonight? It's already morning there.""They've been waiting for a response all day. If we don't handle this now, they're walking. That's three hundred million in investment."I closed my eyes. Three hundred million. Too much to lose over pride or exhaustion."I'll be there in thirty minutes."I changed quickly. Left a note for Mrs. Cara about where I'd gone. Didn't bother telling Robert. He was at the charity event. Probably networking.
(Robert POV)Three days passed in cold silence.Mia stayed in the guest room. I stayed in our bedroom. We existed in the same house but different worlds, orbiting each other without touching.Nel noticed. Asked questions we couldn't answer. Why was Mia sleeping upstairs? Why did Robert look so sad? Were they getting divorced like his parents?"No," I told him each time. "We're just working through some things."But the lie felt heavier every time I said it.James hosted a business function on Thursday evening. Some charity event for children's hospitals that JR Investment sponsored annually. Attendance was mandatory for family members."You need to be there," he told me that morning. "Investors are getting nervous about the Oscar situation. They need to see stability. Unity.""Mia won't come.""Then come alone. Show them you're still in control."Control. What a joke. I'd lost control weeks ago. Maybe months ago. Maybe I'd never had it at all.I dressed in my best suit. Checked my ref
( Mia POV)I ended up at Anita Trade and Investment.Work had always been a refuge. Something I could control when everything else spun out of reach. My assistant looked surprised to see me. "Miss Cops. I didn't expect you today.""Change of plans. What's on the schedule?""Board meeting at two. Conference call with Tokyo at four. And you have several messages from Mr. Ryder."Collins. Of course."Put him through if he calls again."I buried myself in work. Financial reports. Strategic planning. Merger discussions. Things that made sense. Things with clear answers. My phone rang at noon. Collins."Hey," I answered. "Sorry I haven't called back.""It's okay. I figured you were busy." A pause. "Or avoiding me.""Little bit of both.""Want to grab lunch? Or is that too complicated right now?"It was too complicated. Absolutely too complicated. But I said yes anyway. We met at a quiet restaurant away from downtown. Somewhere neither of us would run into business associates or reporters or
(Mia POV)I didn't leave the mansion that night.Couldn't bring myself to walk out the front door with Robert watching, his expression a mixture of desperation and resignation.Instead, I found myself in one of James's guest suites. Third floor. East wing. Far enough from the dining room that I couldn't hear Sophia's laughter or James's calculated conversations."You can stay here tonight," James had said when I'd appeared in the hallway, bag in hand. "Tomorrow we'll discuss more permanent arrangements."More permanent arrangements. Like my marriage was already over. Like it was just a matter of logistics now.Robert had followed me upstairs. Watched silently as I unpacked the few things I'd thrown together. A change of clothes. Toiletries. The book I'd been reading to Nel.Not enough for a real departure. Just enough to prove a point."How long are you planning to stay here?" he asked finally."I don't know. Until I can think clearly. Until you figure out what you want.""I want you.
(Robert POV)I drove for hours. No destination. Just movement. Putting distance between myself and the image burned into my brain.Collins Ryder kissing Mia's cheek. Her hand pressed to the spot where his lips had been. The intimacy of their body language. The way she'd looked at him.Like he was safe. Comfortable. Easy.Everything I wasn't anymore. My phone kept buzzing. Mia calling. Texting. Leaving voicemails I couldn't bring myself to listen to.I'd told her not to come home. Sent that text in a moment of rage I immediately regretted but couldn't take back.Except she had to come home. Nel was there. Mrs. Cara. The house was hers as much as mine.I was being irrational. Childish. Letting jealousy cloud my judgment. But God, seeing another man's lips on her skin had nearly destroyed me.By the time I finally drove home, the sun was setting. Golden light painting everything orange and red like the world was on fire.Appropriate.I found Mia in Nel's room, reading to him. Some book a
