Chapter 3

Author: Daydreamer
After the surgery, they moved me into a hospital room. I kept my eyes closed and pretended to be asleep.

I didn't want to face Janice.

My head was a mess. I was exhausted.

She came anyway. I felt her sit down beside me, then a drop of something cold hit my face.

Her tears.

"I'm sorry," she whispered. "I won't ever let you get hurt like this again."

Before, seeing her like this would've been enough to make me sit up, pull her close, and tell her it was nothing.

Now, it just made my stomach turn.

There was a sound at the door.

"Hey, Janice, are you hungry? I grabbed breakfast for you."

It was Tim.

Janice let go of my hand and answered without turning around. "I'm not hungry. You eat. In three hours, you're getting on a plane and heading back. It's not safe here."

"I don't want to go alone. I'm scared. Can you come with me?" His voice softened, almost pleading, thick with a kind of spoiled sweetness.

"No. I need to stay with my husband." She didn't hesitate.

"But I'm really scared…"

Janice went quiet. A few seconds later, she gave in.

"Fine. I'll go talk to the team."

She always said I was the only one she loved.

But when it came to Tim, she never had the heart to refuse him.

The moment Janice stepped out, Tim's expression changed. He walked over to my bed and slapped me, hard.

"You're awake, right? Drop the act. We all know they gave you something to keep you conscious." He looked down at me, smug and satisfied. "So? Not fun, is it? Getting turned into half a man. I heard they wrecked your arms and legs, too. That's rough."

I forced my eyes open and stared at him. "Even like this… Janice still won't divorce me and marry you."

Tim was obsessed with her. Anyone could see it.

Too bad she never felt the same.

His face darkened for a second, then he let out a short, mocking laugh.

"Don't get so proud. Let me tell you something: Janice brought me back here so I can take credit for this mission. The fugitive your team caught is going on my record now."

Rage burned through me. I dragged a few words out of my throat.

"You…are despicable."

This operation was supposed to be ours alone.

Janice said she was worried about me and insisted on coming along.

As it turned out, she wasn't worried. She brought me here to be destroyed.

And now, even the credit for capturing a fugitive, something two of our men died for, was being handed to Tim.

Tim picked up a syringe and pushed it straight into my vein without hesitation.

"You should just die," he said lightly. "Look at you. Living like this isn't living. Better to step aside and let Janice and me have our happy ending."

He smiled, cold and sharp.

"This is a septic agent. Janice didn't want you screwing things up, so she told me to give it to you. Goodbye. Maybe next time, you'll actually beat me."

He laughed and walked out as if nothing had happened.

Less than five minutes later, the machines around me started screaming. Alarms blared, sharp and nonstop.

Doctors and nurses rushed in, the room exploding into chaos.

"This is bad! His vitals are crashing. The clotting function is failing. If this keeps up, the infection will kill him. We need to transfer him back home now. They've got the medication there."

"There are no outbound flights right now."

My teammates all started talking at once, panic spreading fast.

Then someone suddenly shouted, as if they had just remembered something.

"Wait! Janice applied for a helicopter. She can take Samuel back herself."

Hope flickered in my chest.

I wanted to live.

I continued, "For example, you could've stopped it from happening. You could've kept Tim from leaving the country. There were plenty of options. Instead, you chose to make me take his place. Janice… Do you really love me?"Janice was smart. If she had truly wanted to change things, she could've handled it perfectly.Yet, she didn't.She chose the most extreme outcome and let me be the one who paid for it.She never even stopped to think if I would survive. She had already changed. She just refused to admit it."I used to give in easily," I said quietly, "but that was for the version of you who loved me. Not for the version that chose to hurt me."I paused, then met her eyes."Janice… I don't love you anymore."The love I once had for her had long since turned into nothing but disappointment and pain. I thought I had let it go, but the wound still ached deep down."I was wrong… I'm sorry…" She sank to the floor, clutching her head, her voice breaking into quiet sobs.I sighed

I was too stunned to speak.Janice had actually started hurting innocent people…because of me?"Go talk to her," the old man said with a tired sigh. "Don't let her keep going down this path. We can't enter that world ourselves. Only one interworld traveler can enter a given world."I nodded.I didn't want to see Janice again, but I couldn't let her keep killing people because of me.I followed the man to a rundown building.Police had the place surrounded. A loudspeaker kept blaring from outside."Janice Frost, you're surrounded! Put the weapon down and come out with your hands up. Cooperate, and we'll go easy on you."The old man led me straight through the perimeter and into the building. The metallic smell of blood hit me immediately, so thick that it almost made me gag.And then I saw Janice, standing in the middle of a room, soaked in blood. She stood there with her back to me, completely still, like a statue. On the floor, Tim lay barely breathing, his body drenched in

Janice forced herself through the wave of pain crashing over her and activated a teleportation array. Her figure vanished on the spot. A second later, she reappeared near Tim.The moment he saw her, he hurried over, reaching for her with an eager smile."Where did you go? I couldn't even catch up to you."Janice didn't look at him. She kicked him hard, sending him to the ground, then grabbed his hair and yanked his head back."You injected Samuel with a septic agent?!"Tim cried out, panic flashing across his face as he shook his head. "I didn't! I swear I didn't! Janice, what are you talking about? Why would I hurt Samuel?""Still lying?" Her hand closed around his throat, tightening bit by bit, her voice cold enough to cut. "Talk. Why did you do it?""Cough… Janice… I-I did it for us…" He struggled to breathe, words breaking apart between gasps. "If he stayed alive…we…we could never be together… I know you love me. You were just held back because you're married…"Disgust fli

Janice couldn't believe that Tim, someone she had trusted without question, was capable of something this vicious. She opened her mouth, but no words came. She had never told Tim to inject me.Katie pulled a ring from her pocket and tossed it at her feet."Samuel asked me to give you this."Janice's hands trembled as she picked it up.It was our wedding ring.Fear flooded her eyes, disbelief right behind it."H-He doesn't want me anymore?"The light reflecting off the ring stung her eyes.Back then, on that mission, she took shrapnel for me. A fragment had pierced her ribs, and even like that, she told me that I should find someone else.I refused. I melted that piece of metal down and turned it into this ring.On our wedding day, I told her that if there ever came a day I didn't want her anymore, I would take it off.And now I had.Katie let out a cold laugh. "Yeah. He watched you get on that helicopter with Tim, watched his own wife cut off his only way out. Why would he

The file slipped from Janice's hand and hit the floor with a sharp snap. She stared at the notification, reading it over and over in her mind. "Samuel's…dead?"Her voice shook as she whispered it. She quickly contacted her mentor through an arcane channel. The mentor was quiet for a moment, eyes fixed on the screen where my lifeless face stared back."Yes," he said at last. "He's gone."Janice's eyes widened, panic breaking through. "He's the main protagonist! He's supposed to be protected. How could he die?"Her mentor let out a low breath."Janice, you let your feelings cloud your judgment. There's only so much luck this world can give. You transferred most of Samuel's luck to Tim. Once that happened, the thing keeping Samuel alive disappeared."There was a pause. A flicker of something like pity crossed the mentor's expression."Plus, you forced him through things he was never meant to endure. By the end, there was nothing left. Everything that should've sustained him had

My teammates rushed me onto a stretcher and pushed me toward the runway. We ran straight into Janice and Tim as they were about to leave.Katie Hoffman sprinted over and grabbed Janice by the arm. "Let Samuel get on first. He's crashing. If he doesn't make it back, he's not going to survive!"Janice didn't even pause. "No. The helicopter only fits two. I'm taking Tim out now. This place isn't safe."Her voice was steady, with no hesitation.Katie's voice broke as she shouted, "Samuel's dying! He's your husband! How is getting Tim out more important than his life?"Tim lowered his head, putting on that soft, fragile look. "It's okay, Janice. Samuel's probably just jealous. You should take him back. I'll be fine here on my own."Janice had been wavering, just slightly. But after she heard that, her expression settled."Samuel's not in danger. The doctors just said he was stable. Don't try to lie to me for him. This isn't the time to act out."She grabbed Tim's hand and headed f
