Chapter 6

Kara clutched her heart in pain. She slowly crouched down and curled into a ball.

When Bennett stepped out and saw this, he was terrified. Rushing over, he scooped Kara up in his arms. He looked genuinely anxious and distressed. "Kara, is it your heart again? The doctor said you can't get too worked up!"

"B-Bennett, my medicine. It's in my pocket," Kara gasped.

Bennett quickly carried her to the bedroom, carefully laying her on the bed before fishing out her heart medication from her pocket. Only after she had stabilized did he realize that he was drenched in cold sweat.

Under his care, Kara's heart condition hadn't flared up for almost four years.

But this time–

A dreadful realization struck Bennett. His throat went dry, and it took him a while to find his voice. "Kara, did you see anything in the room on the third floor just now?"

"Do you mean the secret room?" Kara smiled bitterly.

Back when they first started dating, everyone had told her that Bennett had a secret room where he kept something very important to him.

She hadn't looked into it at the time.

Now she finally understood. The thing hidden in that room was the person he cherished the most.

Under Bennett's searching gaze, Kara shook her head. "I didn't see anything. I collapsed before I could."

Bennett let out a long sigh as if he had narrowly avoided disaster.

He hurriedly picked up the phone to call the family doctor, completely missing the moment when the last trace of hope faded from Kara's eyes.

Kara's heart condition was a chronic illness. It couldn't be cured, only managed.

The doctor prescribed alternative medicine, and for the next week, Bennett personally took care of everything. He stayed in the kitchen for hours each day, carefully brewing the medicine before feeding it to Kara, spoon by spoon.

"Kara, this medicine is too bitter. I bought your favorite chestnut cake to help with the taste." Bennett's voice was filled with affection.

Kara smiled a little.

The chestnut cakes from the north side of the city were always in high demand. To get a box, one had to line up at 3 o'clock in the morning.

He had put in the effort.

If she hadn't uncovered the truth, she might have really believed he loved her deeply.

Even during their afternoon naps, he would hold her hand tightly.

Kara looked around at the wall of dolls that covered an entire side of the bedroom. She felt a deep bitterness in her heart.

She loved claw machines, so Bennett had scoured the entire city for the latest ones, helping her win over ten thousand plushies. In the center of them, two porcelain dolls stood side by side.

Kara fetched a small stool. She climbed onto it to reach the two porcelain dolls.

"Kara, why didn't you call me when you woke up? If you wanted these dolls, you could've just told me. It's too high up. What if you fell? That would break my heart!"

A large hand suddenly reached over her head. Bennett asked in a curious tone, "What do you want these dolls for?"

"Nothing. They just looked a little dusty, and I wanted to wipe them clean."

"The maids can take care of that–"

Before Bennett could finish his sentence, his phone rang. He picked it up, and his expression instantly changed. "How could you be so careless? I'll be right there!"

Through the phone, Kara clearly heard the voice on the other end. It was Vanessa's, and she was choked with tears.

Bennett hesitated. "Kara, a friend of mine is in trouble–"

"Go ahead," Kara said flatly.

Her indifference made Bennett feel inexplicably irritated.

But the voice on the other end was pressing him, and he didn't have time to explain. "Wait for me at home. I'll be back as soon as I can."

He hastily handed the dolls to Kara before turning to leave.

In his rush, the dolls grazed Kara's fingers before slipping from her grasp.

They shattered against the floor.

Amidst the shards of porcelain, a folded piece of paper tumbled out.

"Natalie, my one and only love. I will always be your knight in shining armor."

A jagged shard cut across Kara's hand, but she didn't feel the pain.

Her phone screen kept lighting up with Vanessa's messages.

"See? Didn't I tell you? The reason he loves winning plushies with you is that my sister loved claw machines too! Kara, you're just a stand-in.

"Guess what I told him over the phone? I said my sister's grave had some issues, and Bennett rushed off in a panic. Hahaha.

"Oh, by the way, doesn't Bennett have a secret room full of my sister's things? The password is her birthday! You should check it out. You'll be in for a surprise."

Images of countless AI-generated face swaps flashed through Kara's mind.

Her insides twisted like they were being wrung dry.

She stood at the door of the secret room, lifted her hand, but let it fall again.

She would be leaving soon.

Who Bennett loved no longer had anything to do with her.

The wind carried Wilma's words straight into Bennett's ears. They hit him like a truck. He was reaching into his pocket a moment ago, but he stopped. In it was the vasectomy paperwork he had brought along. It fell to the ground and was blown away by the wind.He stood there in a daze and watched Wilma, who was dressed in a black gown, step into Jamie's car. Hand in hand, the two disappeared from view. The vasectomy paperwork might as well have weighed a thousand pounds.Bennett had done it secretly at a small private clinic without telling anyone in the family. He only wanted to prove to Kara that he didn't come back to her for children. He wasn't here to make her a surrogate mother. This was his way of repenting and making amends. However, he never even got the chance to explain before Wilma tore him apart with her harsh words.Vanessa picked the paperwork up from the ground and threw her head back to laugh."Hahaha! Bennett, you actually got a vasectomy? This is the joke of

The golden boy of Crestmoor once again made the front page.It all started when Bennett had another one of his episodes. He kneeled outside Jamie's estate every single day, refusing to leave no matter how many times someone tried to drive him away.He knelt for eight hours a day without fail and was more hardworking than most students.Naturally, the paparazzi picked up the scent and swarmed in."Bennett, did you make a mistake? Is your uncle punishing you by making you kneel?""Bennett, it's said that Mr. Jamie Miles's new bride, Wilma, looks exactly like your ex, Kara. Is that why you're kneeling here?""Are you here to repent?""Oh no, he fainted. Someone take a photo! That's tomorrow's headline!"The legendary golden boy of Crestmoor looked like a stray mutt. He was surrounded and photographed from every angle by reporters.Wilma stood by the floor-to-ceiling window on the second floor of the estate and observed coldly.Ever since Bennett arrived in Mendoria, he had been

The designers respectfully opened the velvet boxes one by one as the butler introduced each dazzling ring. The array of rare, radiant diamonds nearly blinded Wilma."Harry, I only need one ring for the wedding. Does Jamie want me to wear a ring on all ten fingers?"Each diamond was unique.Wilma was surprised, but also a little emotional. Jamie had really done a lot for her.She smiled sincerely. "Harry, you gathered all these gems in just a week. That must have been a lot of work.""Madam, you flatter me. I don't have the ability to pull this off in a week. These are all pieces Mr. Miles collected over the past decade or more!"It extends to clothes, handbags, and other jewelry. If he ever saw something he liked, he bought it and saved it."All just for the day you'd get to choose."Wilma's eyes shimmered.Jamie had been collecting these gems for over a decade. Was he that sure she'd marry him in the end?Just then, the sound of a familiar car engine could be heard outside

Vanessa had been locked up in Northernvale for a week. Every day, she had to word hard. At night, she was even bullied by her roommates. Finally, one night, she escaped.Dressed in nothing but a thin tank top and shorts, she ran like a madwoman. As the distance between her and the dorm widened, her heart pounded faster and faster. She had to leave. She had to find Bennett. She was Natalie's sister. Bennett couldn't treat her like this."Damn it! That wretch is running. Get her!""When we catch her, we're not letting her off easy. We've not had any action for a while now. Let's have some fun with her.""Hell yeah, let's all take a turn!"Vanessa was horrified by the laughter behind her. The more scared she was, the less her limbs would cooperate.By the fifth time she fell, the men had caught up.Flashlights beamed harshly into her eyes as they rained kicks and punches on her."Run! Why aren't you running now, huh? Wretch, you think you can just escape from a place like this?"

Wilma bit her lip and held Jamie's hand tightly. Their fingers interlaced.Bennett seemed horrified. "Uncle Jamie, what's going on? Kara is my girlfriend. She's the woman I've vowed to love for the rest of my life! How could you–"He suddenly gasped as if realizing something. "I get it! Kara must've lost her memory after the shipwreck, right?"Kara, come here! It's me, Bennett! I'm your boyfriend, don't you remember?" he coaxed gently, but his face grew paler by the second when there was no response. Panic swept over him as his eyes locked onto her.Jamie frowned deeply. "Honey, go upstairs. I'll handle this," he said reassuringly to Wilma.Wilma shook her head. She was no longer the naive girl who'd once been so easily manipulated by Bennett. She had chosen Jamie, and she wasn't going to waver.Earlier, when Bennett lunged toward her, she clearly saw the look of worry and momentary lack of confidence in Jamie's eyes. Could a proud and distinguished man like him even be afraid o

She looked at the oddly familiar name, and her eyes gradually filled with tears.Jamie quickly seized the moment and pulled her into his arms. His voice was gentle as he said, "When you first entered the orphanage, the staff changed your name because they were afraid it would be too painful for you to be reminded of your parents. The director's surname was Carter, and so they gave you a name that somewhat rhymed with it, Kara."Now, Kara is gone. The one still alive is Daddy and Mommy's little princess, Wilma. She's also my wife."Look, when we registered our marriage yesterday, Wilma was the name you used."Wilma looked at the gentle and affectionate man in front of her and nodded. She smiled and held back the tears in her eyes. "Yes, Kara died in that shipwreck. The one alive now is your wife, Wilma!"The two exchanged a smile. Jamie's Adam's apple moved up and down.Wilma immediately noticed the spark of desire burning in his eyes. She quickly lifted the hem of her skirt a l
