Chapter 3

Author: Sarah Lane
Three days before the flight took off, Scarlett sent a photo of Lorenzo having a barbecue by the seaside.

[Scarlett]: To celebrate me carrying his baby, Lorenzo rewarded me with a vacation in the Maldives. He can’t bear me working so hard.‌

I didn't reply because I didn’t care about what they did anymore. Instead, I met up with a few close friends for one last get-together and enjoyed a wonderful time. Deep down, I knew we probably wouldn't be able to see each other again in the future.

Two days before the flight, Scarlett sent another photo. It was Lorenzo reading a book titled A Guide to Early Childhood Education.

[Scarlett]: Lorenzo is concerned about the baby's education. Even though it's just a little bean in my tummy, Daddy keeps talking through my belly every single day.

I still didn't reply. I went to the bank, exchanged all my money for cash in Euros, and then canceled all my bank cards.

One day before the flight, Scarlett sent a video that showed a beautiful and romantic fireworks display over the sea. Scarlett was crying with emotion, and Lorenzo was holding her gently, comforting her: "Why are you crying? There will be more surprises in the future."

[Scarlett]: Lorenzo booked the entire island for me. He bought out every single firework in the Maldives, just to celebrate my birthday.

I just offered a faint smile. Today was Scarlett's birthday. It must be a double celebration for her birthday and pregnancy.

When Lorenzo was away, I had packed everything up early. I donated all five large bags of clothes and shoes to charity, not leaving a single piece behind. As for all my daily necessities in the house, I took them directly to the funeral home and paid the staff to burn them all.

In the house I had lived in for five years, I felt a strange sense of unfamiliarity. The house had been cleaned out completely. There wasn't a single trace of mine. I only had one carry-on backpack, containing my passport. The only old belonging was the phone in my hand.

I used the phone to hail a taxi to the airport. The driver stopped at the terminal. Just as I was about to get off the car, I happened to spot Lorenzo in the crowd. He was pushing a luggage cart with two suitcases, one blue and one pink. Scarlett was holding his arm, leaning against his shoulder like a little bird relying on him. They were talking something but I couldn’t hear. Lorenzo lowered his head and kissed her on the lips, seemingly to soothe her. They gradually disappeared into the sea of people.

My phone rang. It was Lorenzo, "Anastasia, I'm back from my business trip. I'm coming to pick you up now, and let's go out for dinner together."

"Are you tired?"

"Not too bad. By the way, I remember you said I could open the box you gave me today, right?"

"Yes."

"I can't wait. You made me wait two week! I've been guessing every day what you got me. It must be something meaningful for our wedding anniversary, isn’t it?"

"Yes, it’s meaningful. You'll know as soon as you see it." I knew Lorenzo would later find a small silver ingot in the box. That was the melted wedding ring.

"Okay, wait for me. I should be home in about two hours."

Two hours was more than enough. By then, I should have already crossed the border.

"Okay."

"See you in a bit. Love you, Anastasia."

Hanging up, the taxi driver reminded her, "Miss, you haven't paid the fare yet." I paid and immediately turned off her phone, took out the SIM card, tossed it casually into a trash can, and then handed the phone to a little kid nearby.

The kid was delighted: "Thank you, sister!"

I smiled and patted his hair. "You're welcome."

The kid’s mother felt embarrassed, "We can't take it. It’s valuable."

I asked, "Are you guys going abroad?"

"Yes, we're going to Africa to find his dad."

I smiled and said, "Just take it. You might find it useful when you get to Africa."

"Alright then, thank you so much."

I waved hands and said goodbye to them. "I wish you a pleasant journey."

The airport broadcast sounded, "Please proceed to Gate H23 for boarding as soon as possible. Your flight is about to depart..."

Looking back at the terminal, I resolutely walked towards the boarding gate.

Being alone, I couldn't think of a reason to refuse Lisa’s invitation. So, I carefully picked out some fresh flowers, took my kitten and a pot of hot coffee over to Lisa's house.Lisa lived alone for a long time before she knew me. She was absolutely thrilled to have a female companion around her own age. Looking at the decorations scattered all over the floor, she said apologetically, "My brother bought them. He was supposed to set them up, but I'm afraid we'll have to do it ourselves."The Christmas tree was nearly two meters tall and looked stunning next to the fireplace. However, it was not an easy task to put stars on the top. I, however, didn't mind at all, "It's alright. Just get me a stool. I can do it."I was a bit taller than Lisa. Standing on the stool, I could easily reach the top of the tree. Working together, it didn't take a long time to fully decorate the tree. Those blinking stars gave the living room a wonderful festive atmosphere.Lisa couldn't help but complain, "I

[The perspective of Anastasia] I migrated and changed my name, Renee. In the forests of Norway, there stood a wooden cabin. It was the dead of winter. Most of the townsfolk stayed indoors, enjoying the snow and resting, and I followed the local custom, making the same choice.I set up the easel by the window, sketching the silver-wrapped winter scenery while occasionally sipping a cup of freshly ground coffee. At my feet lay my adopted kitten. Suddenly, a knock sounded at the door. I scooped up the kitten and went to answer it. It was my landlady, Lisa, coming for a visit. I stepped aside to let her in, "It’s so clingy. I have no choice but to bring it along.""It's alright, it’s cute." Lisa shook the bag in her hands, "I baked some cookies at home and I want to share some with you.""Thank you." I poured a cup of coffee for Lisa as well. The winter life in this simple town tended to be a bit dull. With little else to do, dropping by a neighbor's house was a common occurrence. It ha

Hardly had the words been uttered when Lorenzo began to feel ashamed. He felt utterly humiliated, knowing I had left him precisely because of his affair. The female officer asked bluntly, "So your wife ran away because you were having an affair?"Lorenzo didn't say a word. He just nodded with an awkward expression on his face. Fortunately, an incoming call from an unknown number saved him. He picked up, desperately hoping it was me. The man on the other end identified himself as a lawyer from a law firm, "Is this Mr. Lorenzo Vitale? I am the attorney commissioned by Ms. Anastasia Ivanova. There is something I need to discuss with you in person. Are you available right now?" "Yes, I'm coming over immediately!" Lorenzo didn't bother explaining himself further to the police. He drove to the law firm as fast as he possibly could. All Lorenzo could think about was meeting the lawyer and convincing Anastasia to come back. He ran red lights along the way and didn't care about the curses fro

The more Lorenzo thought about it, the more panicked he became. He was terrified that I had acted on a sudden impulse, missed something while staying in a hotel, suffered from an accident in daily life, or ran out of money while traveling. In his desperation, Lorenzo simply sat down on the swing. He logged into his bank account and just kept transferring money non-stop‌. He was genuinely afraid I might encounter difficulties out there, completely unaware that I had never needed his support. It wasn't long before a call came in from the bank, "Mr. Vitale, your recent transfer attempts have all failed."Lorenzo was on the edge of a breakdown, stripped of his usual rationality. He blurted out, "Is there an issue with the transfer limit or frequency? I can prove this is my own operation. If you need verification codes or signatures, I can provide them immediately. I just need to transfer money to my wife."He couldn't even remember the last time he had personally transferred money to me.

Scarlett fell silent, feeling a bit sullen. She was convinced that she would eventually possess Lorenzo and his wealth sooner or later anyway. ‌If this could be tolerated, what couldn’t? ‌ It had been a while since Lorenzo had come home during the day. Standing in front of the villa, he felt a sense of strangeness mixed with novelty. He thought this might be the reason why absence makes the heart grow fonder."Anastasia, I'm back," Lorenzo called my name, walking briskly through the courtyard and into the living room. The flowers and plants in the yard were neatly trimmed, and the interior decor remained exactly as it always was. Everything was spotless, showcasing the homeowners' taste and style. Lorenzo keenly knew exactly who to credit for this. It was Anastasia. He wanted Anastasia to know his love and said softly, "You've worked hard, my dear wife." But as he looked around, he couldn't find me anywhere. He then turned to the servants who were working and asked, "Where is Madam? D

Lorenzo hung up the phone, sensing nothing amiss.Scarlett pouted in dissatisfaction, "The days when you belong only to me are almost over. Soon, we'll have to go back to sneaking around."Lorenzo warned her sternly, "Don't let Anastasia suspect, or you'll know the consequences."Scarlett looked aggrieved as if she were on the verge of tears. "Okay! Okay! I know it. You've repeated it many times."Seeing her about to cry, Lorenzo finally softened and lowered his head to coax her. "Don’t be sad. You're pregnant. It's not good for the baby.""You yelled at me.""I'll buy you a handbag later. Which one do you have your eye on?"Scarlett lifted her head. "I don’t like bag. I want you. Before you go home, let's do it one more time."Lorenzo disapproved, "I already told Anastasia I'd be home in two hours. There won't be enough time.""Just tell her there was traffic. The airport expressway gets congested all the time anyway..."Lorenzo checked his watch, still hesitating. Scarlett threw her
