ログインMy business has been a bit dull this week, but things already seem to be looking up today. I’ve suddenly received an order that will make up for all the money I haven’t made since the beginning of this month.
One of my sales girls, Tina, came into my office a few minutes ago to inform me that my attention is needed by a customer who has just ordered more than half of all our stock. He wants to see me before making his payment.
Immediately after Tina leaves my office, I hop out of my seat and go straight into the mini-bathroom adjoining my office. I check my wig and makeup in the mirror to be sure that I look presentable enough to meet my generous customer.
My business started as a hobby. I love tribal handmade items, and I started collecting them during my university days.
By the time Walter and I got married, I had amassed a huge collection of wooden earrings, raffia purses, wax print bags, tie-and-dye dresses, leather sandals, wooden bangles, hand-crafted hairpins, and beautifully carved figurines.
When the twins were born, I had to dedicate one room in our apartment to store my collection of knick-knacks. That really irritated Walter, who suggested that I get rid of them or sell them off. And that was how my side hustle was born.
I set up an online shop where I started selling them, while I worked full-time as a PR consultant in an advertising agency. Within a year, my proceeds from the business had exceeded what I was making as my monthly salary.
Demand for the items also increased, so much so that I started importing my goods from Africa and the Caribbean, where they’re made in bulk. I got featured in two major lifestyle magazines.
I was also invited to TV and radio stations where I was interviewed on how I was able to balance a full-time career with a thriving business and still maintain a happy home as a wife and mother.
The ‘happy home’ part always made me laugh internally because nobody knew the nightmare I was facing in my marriage with Walter. The more successful I became, the worse our relationship got.
“Well, all of that is in the past,” I say to myself now and adjust my cotton blouse.
I quit my job when my business officially hit its second year. It took me another three years to finally rent a store space, giving my business a proper home offline.
The online store is still active, but most of our clientele is made up of walk-in customers. This is why the physical store is the heartbeat of my business.
I finally make my way towards the front of the store with a big smile on my face. I can’t wait to meet my new customer.
As I enter the display area, I see my sales girls beaming like fireflies as they flutter up and down with joy. Even Jamie, our receptionist/cashier, is grinning widely and batting his curled eyelashes.
“Where is the customer?” I ask no one in particular.
My sales girls disperse immediately when they hear my voice, finally allowing me to see who I was looking for. Blood drains from my face the moment my eyes rest on the man.
He is sitting on one of the chairs reserved for customers, looking very comfortable as if he owns the place. There’s a bottle of water on the low stool in front of him.
When he sees me, he uncrosses his long legs and stands to his full height. He comes forward and extends his hand towards me as he had done when we first met two months ago.
“Hello, Ms. Eunice Francis,” he says in his rich baritone voice. “It’s good to see you again.”
I blink many times to clear my vision, but he is still standing in front of me with his outstretched hand. Samson Ewing is standing in front of me, in my store!
“Uh, hi,” I say in a small voice.
I still can’t believe what is happening. I try my best to act as normal as I can under the circumstances.
“Welcome to my store,” I add and accept his offered handshake.
When our hands meet, memories of our impulsive kiss come flashing through my mind with such vividness that I’m sure he can see it in my eyes. I snatch my hand back and link my fingers together in front of me like a shy schoolgirl.
“This is quite a lovely place, Eunice,” Sam says. “Can I call you Eunice?”
“Sure,” I reply stiffly. “You wanted to see me?”
“Yes. I wanted to be sure that I was in the right store, and that was why I insisted on seeing you first before paying for the things I ordered. Now that I’m sure it’s you, I’m ready to pay.”
Now it all makes sense. He tracks me down somehow, then he draws me out of my ‘haven’ with his massive order just to make sure I am truly the one he is looking for.
But… is there more to his generosity?
“May I see you in my office briefly?” I ask him politely.
“Of course,” he responds immediately. “Let me give my card to the cashier first.”
“No!” I say quickly, surprising everyone.
“I’d like to have a word with you first,” I add with a smile, to put everyone at ease.
Sam smiles as if he knows the reason for my hesitation. “Lead the way then,” he says with a glint in his eyes.
Our lunch date continues without further drama. The food is splendid, and our conversations are flowing easily.By unspoken agreement, Sam and I do not talk about any more personal topics. He tells me about his businesses and some of the wildest trips he’s had across the world. When it’s time for dessert, he whips out his mobile phone from his pocket and comments on having over 20 missed calls as soon as he looks at the screen. I take that as my cue to leave.“This has been fun,” I say sincerely. “Thank you for inviting me to your home.”“Why do you suddenly sound like a TV presenter who just concluded an interview with me?”I laugh. “I didn’t mean to sound like a TV presenter.”“We should do this again soon,” he says smoothly.“Uh, ok,” I reply uncertainly.“What?”“Well, I was so sure that after that… snag upstairs, you wouldn’t want us to hang out anymore.”Sam chuckles. “That’s forgotten already. Besides, I’m on the lookout for good friends, and you seem to fit that role perfectly
“It does look like a palace,” I admit to him. “The amount of gold here is blinding, though. Are any of them real?”“The gold? I doubt it. But then again, judging by how much Paula’s friend billed me for this, they might as well be real.”“Amazing,” I murmur, unable to hide my wonder. “I feel like Alice in Wonderland.”“So, what does that make me? The Mad Hatter or the Cheshire Cat?”“Honestly, I’m yet to figure that out. But there’s still enough time for me to figure that out.”Sam smiles in response. He’s enjoying my wordplay as much as I am. It’s like verbal foreplay, and I can almost feel his excitement each time I say something… promising.“Shall we continue the tour?” He asks finally.“Of course, good sir. Lead the way, please.”With an amused chuckle, he leads me down the hall that connects to a long corridor.r’ It almost seems as if we are now walking through the lobby of a fancy hotel. There are doors on either side of the corridor. The floor is carpeted with a long, soft red
“You’re one fascinating woman, Eunice,” Sam says mysteriously.“More fascinating than any woman you’ve had lunch with before?” I venture.“Absolutely,” he answers promptly.“Hmm… Why me?”“What?”“Why me, Sam? Out of all the sexy, hot famous women you could invite to lunch today, why did you choose me?”He chuckles. “You make it sound like I’m some shallow bum, roaming the streets in search of random starlets to date.”“Aren’t you?”“That’s what the media say I am. But I’m sure you know you shouldn’t believe everything you hear about people you don’t know.”“Well said,” I say and raise my glass in a mock salute to him.Sam sips his drink instead while watching me thoughtfully. It’s as if he’s trying to decide whether to defend himself or just let the topic slide.I take another sip of wine, and the glass becomes empty. Gosh, the wine tastes so good! I feel even bolder than before.“And now, here I am,” I say with a slight unintentional drawl, “drinking this expensive wine with you in
As if on cue, a young man dressed as a waiter walks in through one of the adjoining double doors to the dining room. As I initially guessed, those doors lead to the kitchen. The waiter-looking guy places a pamphlet in front of me and another one in front of Sam, and then he steps back as if to wait for our feedback.“Thank you, Austin,” says Sam to the guy. “Here’s our menu, Eunice. You can go ahead and order what you’d like to eat.”“A menu?” I ask, amused. “Isn’t this your home?”“It is,” he replies with a smile. “I don’t know if you and I have the same taste in food, so I think it’s only fair that you get to choose what you’ll enjoy eating.”“Wow, that’s grand,” I say with genuine awe.Rich people are weird. They get catered to by professional chefs and waiters, and then they even have extensive menus to choose from. How extravagant!“Well, to be honest, I don’t do this every day,” he admits. “I hardly eat at home anyway, but today is a special occasion, and that’s why I had to get
The moment I step into the hall, it’s as if I have been transported into another realm. To say the house is beautiful would be the understatement of the century.Sam’s house is beyond fabulous with its high ceilings, expensive furnishings, and a variety of exotic oil paintings in different sizes. Two winding staircases lead upstairs on either side of the front hall. There is a 12-foot fish tank with exotic aquatic animals inside, standing at the center of the room, separating the living room from the dining area. I cannot even fathom the right words to describe the place. The house looks like a freaking palace!“Welcome to my humble home,” Sam says with arms spread wide as he approaches me from the other side of the fish tank.He is dressed in a crisp white shirt with the sleeves rolled up just below his elbows and a pair of grey tailored pants. His feet are encased in plain grey moccasins.Simply put, he looks edible, and I’m starting to feel a different kind of hunger.“There is not
Time seems to fly by as I busy myself with the inventory report. Before I know it, it’s 1:25, and I’m starting to feel pangs of hunger.“Maybe I should grab a quick snack before lunch,” I wonder aloud.Someone knocks on my door just then.“Yes?” I respond.Joy steps in with a wide smile on her face.“Someone’s here to see you,” she says almost breathlessly.“Is it Mr Ewing?” I ask her.“No. It’s someone else. He looks like a chauffeur, and he arrived in a Bentley!”“Calm down, Joy. Did he tell you his name?”“Marcus. He said he’s here to take you to lunch.”“Marcus? And he mentioned my name?”“Yes. I think he’s Samson Ewing’s driver. I’ve seen a photo of him posing with that car on Instagram before. It’s his car. I’m sure of it!”“Thank you, Joy. I’ll be out shortly.”The girl hurries off as if she’s the one going on the date. I pick up my phone to check with Sam, and I realize that he already sent me a text nearly 30 minutes ago.Oops!“Hi, Eunice. My driver will arrive at your store
