The soft jazz music played gently in the background of the expensive restaurant, giving the place a calm and classy feel.

Allison sat at the table with her friends, smiling elegantly. She lifted her wine glass and took a slow sip.

Her white pantsuit hugged her body just right. Small diamond earrings sparkled from her ears, and her dark hair was pulled neatly into a tight, elegant bun.

She looked every bit the woman in control.

Mitchell had invited her for a casual girls’ night—just a drink and some catching up, she said. Allison almost declined, but something inside her itched to be seen since she hadn't really been going out for a while now.

She wanted to remind everyone that she was still the reigning queen of their circle, the same one they wished they were, but could never be. So she accepted the invitation, and here they were, seated together, laughing and enjoying their drinks.

They were deep into a conversation about the latest internet gossip when Mitchell clapped her hands

David, Isabel, and Mathew sat across from Dr. Allen in the consultation room as they listened to him."As you all know, the surgery was successful," Dr. Allen said, adjusting his glasses. "But when Dr. Morgan regains consciousness, the recovery phase is quite delicate. She needs complete rest—no stress, no loud noises. Try to keep her surroundings calm and avoid too many visitors. It’s important for her healing process.”David nodded, absorbing every word. Mathew also nodded slowly, listening carefully to every word.“We’ll make sure of that,” Mathew said softly. "Thank you, Dr. Allen."Isabel, who had been quiet till now, smiled and added, “We’ll take good care of her, just as you’ve said, doctor. Emma means a lot to us.”When she said that, something flashed in Mathew's eyes, but he quickly masked it. But he wasn't lucky enough… David happened to have seen it, and his curiosity piqued even further, but he said nothing… yet.Dr. Allen gave a nod before excusing himself to tend to his

When David saw Mathew, for a second, he thought the older man had simply come here for some quiet — to breathe, to process everything. So David offered him a small, respectful nod before turning toward the door, planning to head back down to check up on Emma. But before he could take a step, Mathew turned slightly and stopped him."David," he called out in a calm voice.David turned around.Mathew studied him for a brief moment, then asked, "How are you doing?"Caught off guard by the question, David hesitated for a moment before replying, "I'm doing quite well. Thank you."Mathew nodded slowly. He stepped closer to the railing, hands in his coat pockets, eyes drifting out toward the skyline as if trying to find answers in the scattered lights. Then, after a long pause, he muttered, "Thank you for coming over when you heard about Emma's accident."David exhaled slowly. "I was just glad she survived. That was all that mattered."Mathew nodded in approval. He turned his head slightly, a

After David's confrontation with Allison, he didn't leave immediately, but headed to the top balcony of the hospital. The wind up on the hospital’s top balcony was colder than he expected. It nipped at his jacket, tugged at his sleeves, and yet did nothing to cool the storm inside his chest. He stepped forward and leaned against the railing, his eyes just looking around as though it held the answers he was looking for. This place—it still held memories. He hadn’t forgotten the day he found Emma here, tears slipping silently down her cheeks after the incident with Claire. He hadn’t meant to find her that day, hadn’t even been looking. But somehow, life always brought him back to her.And now here he was again, standing where Emma once cried alone, except this time, it was his heart unraveling. He dragged his hand down his face, sighing before reaching into his pocket. The cigarette between his fingers trembled just slightly before he lit it. He took a deep drag, holding the smoke in h

Gavin stared blankly at the screen of his phone just after ending the call. He frowned, his mouth slightly open as if the words he had just heard were still hanging in the air. He muttered under his breath, shaking his head slowly."What exactly was she talking about?” he wondered, muttering to himself. He had been here all this while, stuck on this ridiculous hiking trip or vacation Sophie insisted on for days—waking early, trekking through rocks and woods, pretending to enjoy the fresh air like it was a spiritual awakening.Nonsense! Just plain nonsense! Before he could think more about the call, the bathroom door opened. Sophie stepped out, wrapped in a towel, her hair damp as she rubbed it with another. The scent of her shampoo wafted into the room—a mix of honey and lavender. She moved across the room, humming softly as steam still clung faintly to her skin, oblivious to Gavin’s growing irritation.“I’ve been trying to reach Emma since last night,” Sophie said in a concerned

David's gaze slowly moved from Mathew to Isabel... and then settled on Allison. There was something about her demeanor that unsettled him. More than that, she was the only one he could think of that wasn't really on good terms with Emma. But still, that didn't mean he was right. He stepped closer to Allison, and said in a low voice, "Allison, can we talk for a minute?"She looked up, surprised. "Sure."He led her away from her parents, to a quiet corner near the emergency exit. David folded his arms across his chest, searching for the right words. He didn’t want to accuse her. Not outright. That wasn’t his intention. But a part of him needed to understand. To be sure."I was just thinking," he began carefully, his voice steady but cautious, "Have you and Emma crossed paths recently? Maybe... had any sort of misunderstandings?"Allison’s eyes narrowed slightly, her brows furrowed. "Why are you asking?"David just shrugged, trying to appear casual. "I don’t know. With everything going

David didn’t waste a single second. The moment he heard the news, he was already halfway to the door. "Let me come with you," Grandpa said, visibly worried. David paused briefly, shaking his head. "No, Grandpa. Please stay here with Henry and Claire. They need you." Grandpa's eyes darkened with concern, but he didn’t argue. He only nodded, his shoulders slumped with resignation. David turned and rushed towards his car. As the engine roared to life and the tires screeched away, Grandpa sighed deeply, his hands trembling slightly as he walked back into the living room. He sat on the couch and rubbed his hands together. He remembered when Emma had come over to drop off Claire. She had smiled and sounded okay, and even assured him everything was fine, that she was just swamped with work. But he could see past her mask. There had been fear in her eyes. Not obvious, but subtle – the kind that someone tried hard to hide. He had sensed that something was wrong. Grandpa hadn’t w
